After 6 months of living my life in a carefree, frivolous manner, today was the day I rejoined the workforce.

As tradition goes, I woke up more than several times to each sound that made itself apparent, starting at the hour of 5 am. Whether it was nerves, or the overwhelming fear of my alarm not going off, I was awake well before  I was supposed to get up and go.

Preparing for my first day came with ease. A natural inclination to pull my hair back and lightly do my makeup came as a relief as I looked in the mirror and smiled at what stared back at me.

Why does serving people make me feel so good? I suppose it is the constant stream of people that flutter back and forth to, as their faces don't tend to matter as much as their responses to my smiles do.  I find refuge in an unclassified sense of connection, one that is brief and that only just skims the surface. But it is in this surface where we both feel warm, and happy, and simple. 

Simplicity. Something that does not come along in this lifetime as often as I'd care for it. I found, particularly in the United States, that simplicity is something that nearly doesn't exist. Every choice, word, problem, solution; it's a complex intertwining of thoughts and decisions. Instinct is void. Impulse is null. Spontaneity is a rare gem.

It's odd that going back into the world as a server provokes such thought, however, it is my heart that leads, and my mind that follows. Service. What a simple concept. You demand, I supply. Probably why I like it so much. But it's that extra joke, laugh, smile, grin, that make the job fulfilling. You'll get more than you ordered, and I'll get more than a tip; we'll get human connection. If being a server is the most efficient way of achieving this increasingly difficult task, then so be it.
