"Absolutely not," Dev immediately protests with a short laugh and the shake of her head. "I don't do karaoke. I mean, I do it in that I'll watch it, but I absolutely won't participate."
Her argument is that where she lacks skill in artistic and creative expression, she makes up for it elsewhere, and she'd get too far into her head to even be a semblance of mediocre at it. It might not be as if people do it to be good at it, but that's all Devon has ever known herself to do.
Another off-key note comes from the stage, and Dev only grimaces, turning in her seat to angle away from it. She glances down at her empty glass, then back up to Merritt with a smile.
"I tease. But there's not enough alcohol in this building to get me up there." She nods back up to the current performer who is really fulfilling this starlet invention of themselves. "I'm really wondering how a guy willingly lets himself be called 'Honey' as like, a real name. Not some cutesy pet name."
"Really? No amount? I always thought that you'd be the type to like, get blackout and go completely fucking crazy because you're like, soooo held together and like, scheduled, you know? Like, it's practically impossible to get you over that edge because you're like, so good at controlling every aspect of your life but then boom, you have one too many shots and you're like, dancing topless at the karaoke bar and belting out Mariah Carey like it's your job."
Now that's an image. Merritt doesn't bother trying to hide her clear amusement at the imaginary situation she'd dreamed up. "I feel like it might be my, like, spiritual duty to get you ridiculously obliterated."
Merritt hums, considering the impression that Honey had made on her last time she was here. "I think it's his real name. Even if it isn't he's just, like, that smooth, you know? He was so sweet. Literal honey. Also a total flamer which probably makes his name fit a little better given his whole like, scarf-and-cardigan situation? I don't know, I love him. You should come back sometime on a less busy night and like, listen to some of the regulars sing."
It's becoming clear that Devon's not getting the hint that Merritt wants her to buy her a drink so she decides to stand, taking Devon's hand in hers and leading her towards the bar. Like, whatever. She can be butch too!
"C'mon. More drinks. This one's on me but the next one?" Merritt leans in, her eyes bright with alcohol-fueled merriment. "Better come right out of your pocket."
closed starter for logan valentine ( @cherrieswave ) -> sticky fingers bbq
"Ohmigod hiiii Logan!" Merritt trots up behind Logan with a wide smile and bright eyes - a genuinely happy expression, even if she gets the feeling that the venue manager doesn't like having to interact with her outside of the forced proximity at work functions. Sticky Fingers is bouncing with activity: a full dining room of laughing, eating patrons; a harried staff filling orders as fast as they can; a small group of hungry customers milling about the pick-up area, of which Logan (and now Merritt) are apart of. It's her turn to cook dinner, which is exactly why she's waiting for the order she called in this morning.
It's her day off, okay? No one's going to catch her in the kitchen tonight.
Merritt's being maybe a little too friendly, but she's trying to tread carefully. The news of her and Noa's breakup is as public as the rest of their relationship, which means there's no doubt in Merritt's mind that Logan's feeling particularly evil; Merritt's crush on Noa is as obvious as everything else about her. "Don't tell me you're about to take down some ribs in a white t-shirt. That's like, so brave. I feel like I turn into a total rabid dog when I crack open my styrofoam container."

CLOSED STARTER for @merrittstone when & where: february 29th, 12:15 am in the stone's house
"I hope you don't care I'm not in theme."
Marlowe leans back, their shoulders pressing into the wall as they lazily support themself against a solid structure. It's hard to not want to with a mild fatigue setting in. A satisfying one, of course, at the conclusion of the tour, they completed the home stretch, and now it's time to land back on their feet in Colossal.
Not without celebration, of course.
"Thanks for the invitation. Figure I'd say so before I inevitably Irish goodbye my way out." As they usually do, but they shrug. "I'm not leaving yet. Would you want to go cut a cigarette with me out back?"
"I'm honored you showed up at all, to be honest. From what I've heard, there was like, crazy tension going on during tour; I kind of figured everyone in the band was just going to like, go home and sleep it off for a few days." Merritt is, of course, selfishly happy they'd all come - mostly because she was hoping to catch Noa in a vulnerable spot and finally ensnare him in her feminine wiles - aka her venus fly trap pussy.
Marlowe isn't Noa and Merritt's vagina is begging her to go and find him instead, but she likes hanging with them and would love to bum a cigarette. Plus, tour did something to Marlowe - or maybe to Merritt - or maybe it's the three drinks that she's taken down in the last hour and a half - but the grungy haircut and dry smile are making her feel like okay, yea, Noa can wait. She fishes a lighter out of her cleavage and grins. "Lead the way."

when she denies again, vee can't help the snort of laughter, turning to look at merritt with a disbelieving raise of his eyebrows. plenty of people would have been embarrassed to be with him, a few have said as much, and he suspect it to be at least partially a reason for his constantly failing relationships. he doesn't mind, even expects it given his reputation and... him. he trails back over to the selection of perfumes, eyes remaining locked on merritt as she babbles on.
"hm." vee hums in consideration, struggling to find the perfume he had liked the most off of just feel alone "i mean, it's not like you actually fucked the coke guy." he comments under his breath with a shrug, but he knows what she means "i get it. like i said, i didn't say anything. and i won't if it's a big deal to you. " he finally lifts the correct scent to his nose, smiling in satisfaction "but alsooo, you could tell everyone the truth. that i'm really hot and irresistable and it just kinda happened. and i'll upcharge the hell out of you so you're not fucking the coke guy for coke." given the suburban home they were in, and her taste in drugs, he figures she can afford it anyway.
he lets her sit with her request for a compliment for a second. maybe it's that vee is really fucking high, but it's sort of a good feeling. the kind that he'll surely feel guilty about a second later, but no one had ever gone to him for validation before. or asked his opinion at all. he cranes his neck to each side, spritzing patchouli and lavender on his pulse points, before dimly remembering the whole self esteem thing people have.
there's the guilt.
"you look really good. i like the hair." a pause "am i still hot without the whole stockholm syndrome factor?"
No, Merritt hadn't fucked him, that's true. They'd stopped long before that. Truthfully, it was the kind of party makeout she'd had many times before, just in a very private (very cluttered, very crumby) setting. That very private setting is part of why she felt so weird about the whole thing, so nervous; it was all the more intimate with no one else around. On top of her reclaimed virginity, it feels like a secret she needs to keep.
And it definitely, for sure, absolutely had nothing to do with the fact that she'd done something with Vee, of all people.
"Um, well, no, I don't want that either," Merritt says, a frown on her pouted lips. "I'd like the normal price please; I don't know how much money you think I make at Spaghetti Warehouse but it's like, not enough for all of that." She might get monetary support from Monty in some ways - like not paying for rent or groceries or doctors appointments - but she's a 90's feminist! She buys her own cocaine!
Merritt's eyes narrow as she watches Vee fuss with her perfumes before eventually crossing to snatch the bottle from his hands. "Okay, enough of that - you know some of these are like, expensive, right?" And now he smells like her signature patchouli scent and anyone who can put two and two together ( maybe not as many people as she's imagining ) are going to think they were up here hooking up. Merritt sets the bottle back in its place and turns to Vee, who is a lot closer now. She rolls her eyes.
"Sure, yeah, totally." It's not a very nice compliment - or even a full sentence - but it's not like Vee had put a lot of effort into his praise either. Merritt pauses to take in the full outfit, the kind eyes, and her shoulders drop. He might not look super hot - he's not her usual type - but she'd be lying if she tried to say he doesn't look good. "Yeah, you look cute tonight, Vee. And now you don't even smell like weed so you might actually score with someone. You're welcome."
at her words, pippa laughs. it's not like they expected a pro, but maybe someone who could at least hold their own. she's not disappointed, though, the thought of them stumbling all over the ice together keeps them amused.
"not good at skating?" they ask, keeping their eyes on merritt with a raise of an eyebrow. "i haven't skated in years, so we can figure this out together."
a pause. then a giggle. "suing the city sounds like a fun time. you always have the best ideas." eyes twinkle with amusement and a grin is wide across their face.
"Um, no, definitely not. I'm more of a solid ground kind of girl? Like, I don't even want to wear heels unless the situation desperately calls for some kitten pumps, you know what I mean?"
So figure it out together, they will.
"Honestly, it feels like it would be a lot of work that I don't want to do, but I'm pretty sure my dad knows a lawyer. I don't know if he knows a good lawyer, but I guess that doesn't really matter." Merritt hums, leading them toward the makeshift skate rental. "Honestly, best case scenario? We just get some gnarly bruises but the paramedics that check us out are like, super hot." She looks at Pippa, mischievous. "Unless you already found a cutie while you guys were on tour."
He's spurred into a carefree smile- it always somehow creeps on around Merritt. It seems that she had popped into his life from nowhere and somehow turned it around for the better, curing that 'only child for nearly 12 years' syndrome in her wake. Layer by layer, he peeled off his mask and the thought of revealing himself fully wasn't so daunting when he thought of Merritt standing front and center among the crowd.
Not only was he unable to voice this inane question to anyone else, but CJ doubted he would be convinced by the answers given from others, notorious by his suspicions. Liars breed skepticism, it seemed.
He leaned against the table, arms rigid and hands folded as a rest for his chin. He noticed that mischievous glint in Merritt's eyes, famous for unwarranted fortune readings and patiently waiting for the sun to rise while he, Merritt, and Frankie uncorked bottle after another bottle to elongate their wine-drunk fits of laughter. But what Merritt suggested would not be contained to their trio but something larger, contagious and uncontrolled, where CJ had to mind his laugh, his comments, his mannerism, his clothes, his decoration, -oh god, what if someone saw his cologne collection...
But she looked so excited, and it was CJ that brought it up, and so he smiled back, feigning excitement with raised brows and a natural grin. He had perfected his technique at that point.
" Then let's fucking throw a party. Devon won't mind, I'm sure. Actually, Dario's just across the hall so I can get him into it and we can have both apartments open. You know, like a double-rager. St. Patrick's day? Except... you gotta kiss whoever's wearing green." At that, CJ wiggled his eyebrows, lips puckered for a mock kiss before he followed it with a snort given her expression.
The more they discuss, the more Merritt's into it. Normally she doesn't care to go to the smaller parties that dot the Colossal landscape: in general, she likes the control she has over throwing them in her basement, and beyond that, she's a big fan of being able to escape it all by running upstairs to her room - something she can't do at someone else's house. CJ's apartment is safe, though, and it's close enough to the park that she can snag a cigarette from someone and go for a walk if she really needs the mental respite.
Plus, a dual-apartment party sounds so wild. She will not be missing out on that.
"A St. Patrick's day rager? Um, yes." She pauses, considering the pitch. "But like, wait, wouldn't everyone be wearing green? Are you pitching a like, orgy-fest in Serenity Hollow? Ohmigod, CJ, you're bad." Merritt grins, though a spark of nerves sits in her stomach. She's not sure she's ready to participate in some sort of kiss-a-palooza, but she's not going to say no to helping plan one. "Wait. Are you like, using this party as an excuse to mack on someone? Oh my god, Ceej, do you like, have a crush?"
Dario nodded at her response, letting himself ease into this entire thing a little more. âI donât have repressed anything, Mer.â But they both knew that was a lie, though Dario made no effort to change his answer. âBut messy and fun. I think I can do that.â Thatâs pretty much his life in a nutshell, was it not? He did very little to change the messy part of it all as that would require Dario to step into shoes he isnât too sure heâs ready to wear.
But he does appreciate that Merritt thinks heâd be able to pull off Leoâs hair. He smiles a little more at the thought, then looks back down at the picture of Leo for a second too long. âIâve been thinking of switching it up. Iâm not sure what, though, but I feel likeâŚI donât know. Something needs changing. I canât remember the last time I changed any part of my routine.â He was rambling, reaching for a pair of scissors as he did so, and slowly cutting out words now. âMaybe you could give me a makeover one day. Heck. Might even snag me a date or two.â
Pretty soon, however, Dario was lost in concentration. The tip of his tongue sticks out, as it always does when heâs very focused on something, snipping away, separating different words and things of pictures that stood out to him. Little pieces of paper quickly began to decorate the ground around him like confetti. âHow have you been, Mer? Itâs been some time since weâve caught up, hasnât it?â He spots a Diet Coke can in a picture and cuts it out in a little heart. âHere you go. For you, from me.â
Merritt gives Dario the deadest stare she can, her dark eyes piercing the mask he's gotten so good at wearing. It's been a long time since she'd played the part of his beard, and even when they were dating, she knew exactly what was going on in his little stoner brain. She doesn't press, doesn't push; they're already on the same page. No need to make him feel any more shameful about it than he does.
As she lazily flips through her old magazines, Merritt listens to Dario's desire for change, and her eyebrow slowly inches up her forehead. Her eyes drag to him.
"Right, right, yeah, no, totally. Would love to give you a little makeover." Honestly, she might have to call in Frankie for backup on this one - her own style has always been messy and she doesn't have a great eye for what might look good on men - but the concept of taking him out for a montage-style revamp is interesting. It's just the dating part that snares her. "But um... In order to find you some dates you'd have to be up front with me about what kind of, like, person you're into. You know?"
Merritt turns her attention back to the magazine. Her style is a bit messier than Dario's - she just rips and tears and begins to pile pictures beside her. Most of them are men, cigarettes, and food. She shakes her head. "My life's fine, we're not talking about me. We're talking about Dario. Mmkay?" She takes the little heart-shaped picture with a puppy-like pout and adds it to her stack. "Ugh, you just get me."
there's a lot about shane's current situation that isn't ideal. however, he can't say staying with the stones is included in that. maybe he shouldn't be surprised given the whole family has made a name for themselves as local entertainers, but he still finds himself caught off guard by how easy it is to laugh at merritt's rebuttal and let his worries fade away the moment he falls onto the couch beside her. it's like entering a whole different world. one where his biggest concern isn't how he's going to replace a piston ring nobody seems to carry anymore, but how he plans on besting monty during the next family game night, and if davidâa man he's never met beforeâis about to get kicked off a tv show he didn't even know existed before a few weeks ago.
balling up and tossing the rag into a nearby hamper, he yoinks the bowl of popcorn out of merritt's lap and onto his own. â if by 'that thing' you mean the greatest, most beautiful bike in the world, then, yeah, a bit. â despite the initial, exaggerated defensiveness, his response comes out half-hearted, eyes glued to the commercials rather than meeting hers.
the truth is that, at best, he's made no progress, and more realistically things have only gotten worse since he started. he buries that reality deep down though. hides it under internal reassurances that the bike does at least kind of turn on when he turns the ignition. ignoring that it also sounds like the grinding, scraping gates of hell are opening when he does so, that has to count for something.
it's that frankly delusional insistence that has him tacking on : â eventually you're going to have to find a new victim. â
"Ohhhhh, I see, the reason you keep turning me down is because you want to, like, fuck your motorcycle."
Amongst other reasons. Merritt knows that Shane has bigger fish to fry than his housemate and doesn't take any offense to it; her born-again-virgin status isn't exactly a beacon for men, and beyond that, they've already slipped into a comfortable roommate situation that Merritt's not keen on disrupting. At least before they finish this season, anyway.
Like yeah, she'd make out with Shane if given the opportunity, but it's also like, who wouldn't?
Merritt cocks her head at the lack of enthusiasm: concerned, not confused. She reaches out and places a gentle, brief touch on Shane's shoulder. "She's got life in her still. I can like, feel it. I can feel the pulse. She just needs time."

honestly, merritt is probably the only person that he knows that would be this excited to talk about a vaginal-themed platter of any sorts. if it's what's going to keep her in her good graces, then he'll do it as well. he doesn't want to admit how much thought he's put into it though, because that might bite him in the ass, but it's pretty obvious.
"making it all educational and stuff. putting things there that help with vaginal health and don't just look like it. i'm sure everyone else is going to be so jealous."
he's not lying when he says so either, following her over tot he new section. this is a genius idea even if people normally don't want to give merritt that kind of credit. he smiles softly as he puts a bag of cranberries in the cart, shrugging his shoulders.
"it's new, we just got it in. the rose on the cover has a bunch of words that aren't that legible, readers are supposed to try to make it out. then she ends the book with twenty-six ways to love, each being one of the words on the cover. she also talks about violence in part one. some heavy stuff, but a good read."
"You are going to make such a good girl-dad some day. Like, my dad's great, he's the best, but when my mom moved out, I had to like, remind him that tampons don't buy themselves. You would not have that problem."
Merritt picks up two pineapples, identical in almost every way, and inspects them thoroughly before choosing the one on the right. She hums, adding it to the cart as she listens to the book pitch. "Okay, so true, so like, a self-help sort of thing? With like relationships? That sounds verrry deep and fulfilling. I have to go back and finish bell hooks' Wounds of Passion before I get into anything new, but def adding that to the list."
Plums are added to the cart next, and a papaya for good measure. They aren't the best looking - Ohio isn't exactly the best place to get fresh tropical fruits - but they'd work well enough for the message being sent.
"Ugh, I've been so focused on getting the book club spread I completely forgot to ask how you fared at the snow-in. I heard it was, like, totally insane. Spill the deets, immediately." Then, as an afterthought: "Please."
mila doesnât dare let her expression falter at the mention of shane, no matter what strange feelings it stirs in her. itâs definitely strange to know shane is staying at the stonesâ. shane had promised not to say anything, but she hardly knows him, so sheâs constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. she doesnât know if itâs reassuring that his time with merritt consists of watching tv, or disconcerting that theyâre getting close at all. despite knowing itâs a joke, mila is tempted to point out, rather cruelly, that merritt should probably get her coke problem under control before considering bringing a child into the world. obviously, she swallows the comment and laughs warmly at merrittâs antics. âand what step is real world watching? it has to be at least two or three, right?â she spins the basket in her hands. âsounds like things are progressing pretty quickly.â one thing about merritt that mila has never gotten used to is her lack of a filter. thereâs a part other that admires her ability to say whateverâs on her mind, no matter polite it would be to just ignore it. and apparently, merritt isnât going to ignore the strange tension that lingers between them. mila bites into her bottom lip as her eyes study merritt, trying to determine what, exactly, merritt wants her to say. âno,â she says carefully. âi donât think thatâs crazy.â merrittâs right, this is weird. âi guess itâs like, we always had a relationship that was between our relationship. but now itâs just us.â admittedly, merrittâs friendship is a relationship that has never gotten much of milaâs attention. sure, they were friends, but the more important distinction was that merritt was miloâs sister. it strikes mila now that that will probably never change. if mila was honest with merritt, their friendship would be over. but if merritt wants to try, mila can play along. âbut you can be honest with me.â
"Oh no. Watching reality tv together is actually step zero point five - if he wusses out before the season's over, the whole plan gets scrapped. I'm not wasting my life on someone who can't enjoy strangers getting into it for entertainment, you know?"
And that's the truest statement of all. Merritt might not force her own involvement into the drama that goes on in this town, but she sure as hell enjoys watching it. The same is true for strangers - maybe more so, since she doesn't have any real emotional ties to the situation. Like, if she was watching this whole Milola situation unfold on tv? She'd be all over it. Reality TV forums would hate to see her coming.
"Right, right." Merritt nods, wholehearted and too enthusiastic, as per usual. Despite Mila's agreement with both the weirdness of the situation and the fact they could just be friends now rather than in-laws, Merritt finds herself second-guessing the sentiment. It's hard to read through the awkward tension that laces through the delicate situation, but something about Mila's response doesn't feel as forward as expected.
Sure, Mila could trust Merritt, but can Merritt trust Mila?
"Well, um, anyway. I guess I should get chef Shane his tools..." Merritt limply lifts her basket. Before she forgets, she reaches into the freezer case and grabs the ice cream she was about to leave without. "But, um," she drops the pint container into the basket, "We should get lunch. And I mean that. Like let's actually for real get lunch. Your pick. Okay?"
CLOSED STARTER for @merrittstone when & where: thursday february 26th at jukebox
It comes as no surprise that the bar erupts when someone plays another 2nd Heaven track for the umpteenth time that night. Dev is sat back far from the stage, but not far enough that she can't help but wince at the off key notes being belted into the microphone.
"They can't think that that's actually singing, can they?" The small crowd collecting at the stage still claps and cheers. "Or maybe they're too drunk to think otherwise..."
She tosses back the rest of her drink and raises her brows to Merritt.
"Think you could do better?"
Any other night, Merritt would be right up against the stage with the rest of the tipsy crowd; half of the appeal of Jukebox for her is making other people feel like rockstars, and feeling like a rockstar in return. The place is full of love and admiration, no matter how someone's voice sounds. As long as the performance is bumping, Merritt's going to scream and dance with the best of them.
( It is a lot easier on her ears when the singer is at least in tune. )
Tonight she sits with Devon, wiggling in her seat and head bopping along in a more toned down version of support.
"Me? Oh my god, no. I'm more of a groupie. Like, I can hit the notes, and I can for sure perform, but like, there's this guy named Honey who comes in every Thursday and just belts Whitney like he was born to do it, and like, that's never going to be me." Merritt watches Dev finish her drink and takes a sip from her own near-empty vodka cran. She isn't necessarily hoping Devon will offer to buy her another drink, but if it was on the table, she certainly wouldn't say no. "What about you? Feel like showing up these chumps with some, like, super acrobatic performance of Crazy Train?"
âew, yeah, i donât love the word penetrate,â it's downright cringe inducing. however, ana's complaining only goes as far as that because she does appreciate the enthusiasm. one of her favorite things about merritt is how animated she can be during a conversation. ana gives her the space to go as theatrical as she deems necessary. rightfully so, considering she also has quite the flair for the dramatics. for example, theyâre both completely aware of the fact that theyâre the loudest table at the bar and neither one cares in the slightest. ana takes a quick sip through the twirly straw and sets the drink down, using her newly free hand to hold onto merritt's even tighter. âthank you for getting it. i was worried the divorce would come between us,â and maybe this is why ana has been distant, her subconscious working overtime to keep them apart. because it definitely has nothing to do with what happened when ana and merritt went out last. she was so drunk, she barely remembers it. âi do wish parker had stayed, though. we were driving each other crazy, but i really liked having a roommate who wasnât an annoying sister or a smelly brother,â a smile creeps onto her face. and by the way it lights up, you'd actually believe a lightbulb went on above her head, âohâ speaking of smelly and annoying roommatesâ how is it living with shane?â
Okay, yeah. Penetrate is not an awesome word. Evocative, though, and very effective. Merritt smothers her amusement and uses one red-nailed finger to cross her heart as a swear she'd never say it again.
"No. No no no. Absolutely not. The last thing I'm going to let Milo do is ruin my lady friendships. Like, this is close and personal and no man could ruin what we have. Promise." There's been a couple of close calls. Not with Ana, but with the girls Milo had sought out before Mila - the ones who always happened to be friends with Merritt first. Which, like, get some creativity at least. She's beyond letting her brother's choices effect her life "That man is my ride or die, of course, but, like, we're separate fucking people."
Merritt nods sympathetically, her big eyes looking even glossier from the alcohol and long, beautiful night out. "No, like, I totally get it, and like, it was so sudden and that sort of abandonment, like, leaves a scar, you know? On your heart, or soul, or whatever." She's not even thinking about the way she's started rubbing her thumb across the skin of Ana's hand, though it stops the minute Shane is brought up and Merritt needs both hands to gesticulate.
"Okay, well, first of all, he's not smelly or annoying, he's hot and big and I want him bad. He watches my shows with me, Ana. My shows." As though that's the height of sex appeal. To her, it is. "Honestly, it's super weird now that Milo's there too? Like, we have a routine and stuff, dinner rotation, blah blah blah, but it kind of feels like having Milo around is making things... tense? I might be reading into it or whatever, but every time I pull cards about the situation they tell me, like, girl there's something afoot here."
Merritt stirs her straw around her watery drink. "And I agree. Something is totally afoot."
STATUS ; open TIME/PLACE ; sat morning, feb 28th/free ice skating
it's cold. she shivers slightly and buries her face deeper into her scarf. should they be preparing for tonight? probably yes. but is she? no. they wanted to be outdoors, having some fun before tonight. besides, they had more than enough time to prepare. it's still early, so she can get any last jitters out with the free ice skating. they borrowed a pair of skates from their older sister, and they're hanging by their laces by their side.
spotting someone familiar in the crowd near the hot chocolate booth, they grin. she's bounding up to them ( still too much energy that needs to be released ), smile spread across their face. "hey!" she's exclaiming, moving to take their arm in one of hers. "you're here to help me skate, yeah?" they ask the person, grinning at them.
"Um, I'll be lucky not to fall on my ass; I'm not going to take you down with me."
Merritt's already a little annoyed by the morning. The last place she wants to be is in the middle of this crowded, wintery prison; she could be home, taking a deep-cleanse two-hour shower and eating prosciutto from the package as she watches Steve Burns host the VH1 music video countdown. An ideal day. Instead she's here, bundled up like a fucking marshmallow and left to her own devices because Milo and Shane both have plans, or whatever.
Pippa's arrival is a godsend, even if the idea of ice skating already has Merritt's ankles throbbing. She leans in closer to them, happy enough to return the affection despite her doubts about getting on the ice.

"oh look, it's snowing again." harvey's voice takes on a bored tone as he allows himself to be dragged into the room. when she moves toward her vanity, he takes that as signal to do whatever the hell he wants, and starts exploring the room. vee's own room had something of a personality, sure, but the mess sort of overshadowed all of that. plus, he just didn't get much time there. he liked seeing how other people lived, what their personal sanctuaries looked like.
he cracks a smile at the excuse, but doesn't look her way quite yet, picking up small items and observing them closely before moving onto the next, picking up perfumes and spraying them into the air "mmm, yeah you were." he didn't blame her if that was the case. it was a... weird night. and he was used to being something people were embarrassed of. regret came with the territory "and i have never in my life been workworkwork." not true, necessarily. but he wouldn't consider what he did ambition by any means. so it didn't count. not really.
dragging his eyes away from a lauryn hill poster, he turns to look at her, eyeing the scarce supply she was finishing off "ugh." harvey slips off the straps of his backpack (it was practically glued to him most nights. today, there are large paper wings stapled to each side), retrieving a similarly sized baggie and crossing the distance to the vanity "i was gonna give this to you if you solved my riddles three, but..." he drops it near the mirror and flits away, eyes drawn to a collection of ticket stubs on the wall.
"seriously though, dude. you definitely have been. i had to double check that you didn't have a tab or something." not like he would've done much if she did, but that never stopped people from dodging him before "i don't know if you're, like, embarrassed or something. but i didn't tell anyone."
Merritt's glad for the cover that preparing her line offers when Vee easily shoots down her excuses. Okay. So maybe she'd been avoiding him. Whoopsie! Caught her! The first person she's made out with in a year, easily, and her avoidant tactics are not only observed but aired out, embarrassing her in the comfort of her own room.
And she deserves it.
"You're like, the biggest drug hustler in town. That's work," Merritt argues, then leans down to make her little white treat disappear. It might be a placebo, but something inside her feels calm with the line - and then a deep sense of euphoria she knows is from the drug follows. Vee appears beside her and she barely has the time to register his presence before he's gone again, leaving nothing more than a fresh supply in his wake.
Merritt swipes a finger under her nose and turns, leans against her wardrobe to watch Vee explore her room like it was his for the taking. That warm flush is back, as is the feeling that she needs to deny deny deny. And yet... Here he is, assuring her that he didn't tell anyone like he could see right into her head.
"I'm not embarrassed," she says, quickly, and then immediatey backtracks. "Well, like, I mean, it's not like, about you. Like, I mean, whatever, we made out. I just, like..." Merritt's eyes drag away, down to the floor, and she shrugs. The hand-delivered bag of coke stares at her from the dresser; it feels wrong to reach for it, so she lets it sit there. "You know. I don't need people saying I'm fucking the coke guy for coke, you know? Because I'm not. We made out because we're hot and young and all of our friends were at a party without us."
Perhaps not the complete truth, but it's true enough. There's a manufactured energy building inside of her, spreading into her muscles and making her antsier than usual. She tucks a lock of her straightened hair behind her ear, knowing by the end of the night it would be kinky again.
"Which, you know, speaking of hot. You haven't even told me how good I look tonight."
Dario nods along quietly as Merritt explains, his eyes already drifting down to the glossy pages in his lap. He flips open the first magazine at random, fingers skimming over headlines and photos, collecting the ones that snag something inside him without really thinking about why. âGROWING UPââTROUBLEDâ The words hit like little punches, and he lingers on them a second before turning the page. Then thereâs Leoâyoung, floppy-haired, staring straight into the camera like he knows exactly who he isâand Dario freezes for a beat too long, thumb hovering. He flicks the page away fast, cheeks warming, but when he glances at Merritt and sees only that soft, open encouragement, the knot in his chest loosens. Merritt was a safe place for Dario, even if he sometimes needed to remind himself of that. He flips back, and for the first time in a while (okay so maybe this only happens around Merritt, occasionally Devon) , he lets himself admire another man in the comfort of a friend.
âIt sounds easy enoughâŚâ he says, voice low, almost testing the words. âBut what if the words and images I pick out arenâtâŚgood? Am I overthinking it again?â He meets her eyes for a second, then drops them back to the magazine, holding it up so the picture of Leonardo DiCaprio sits right next to his own face. A small, shy half-smile tugs at his mouth. âAlso, do you think I could pull off Leoâs hair?â He tilts his head a little, letting the messy waves in the photo line up with his own as much as possible, like heâs trying the idea on for size.
It's rare that Merritt feels properly protective over anyone. Maternal instincts don't exist in her body after having been chased out by her equally as detached mother. That being said, something about Dario's softness, his inability to tuck his heart somewhere safer, makes Merritt feel a level of fondness usually reserved for bag charms and prey animals.
"You're definitely overthinking it. Collage is supposed to be messy and fucked up. It's like, gluing your emotions directly on the page without thinking about it too much so you can sort of like, digest the underlying meaning of those feelings. Right? Like this is a way to work through all that repressed stuff inside you."
Merritt appraises the comparison with seriousness before giving a deep appreciative nod. "Abbbbsolutely. Like, you both have that precious little puppy thing going for you, so the floppy bang would definitely look cute."
