I donât know about you but 2015â˛s sonic landscape was a bit... blasĂŠ (no pun intended!) It was ruled by very few this year and was remarkably less female-dominated than I liked--although we did get dance craze anthems, quotable choruses, and even more trap goodies. It was overall kinda hard for me to rank my favorites this year and easier to pick out things like my favorite lyrics (âdon't give no dap to me, niggaâ, "i already said don't my time, now i gotta say don't waste my data", âthey tryna take my confidence and they know I'm cockyâ, âwhere do you know me from?â, âi got a glock in my rariâ) & favorite albums (âDS2âł by Future and âIntegrityâ by JME.) Before I dive into my faves, a shoutout to the honorable mentions (the songs that didnât make my ~coveted~ top 20): âCanât Feel My Faceâ - The Weeknd, every unmentioned song on DS2 + âMarch Madnessâ, âSay Itâ - Tory Lanez, and âFlexâ - Rich Homie Quan. Here are the songs I did like:
20. âMillion Years Agoâ - Adele : This joint is on here mostly because 1) I needed an Adele track. 2) This songs fills me with a familiar warmth. 3) Never had a song speak to me like this in a looooooong time.
19. âBlessingsâ - Big Sean feat. Drake and Kanye West : Swag on another level and oh so quotable #blessed #waywaywayup #straightupÂ
18. âTruffle Butterâ - Nicki Minaj feat. Drake and Lilâ Wayne : The beat is hypnotizingly good, for starters, and it was about time Young Money got it together in a convincing way!
17. âKnow Me Fromâ - Stormzy : Hella silly and super anthemic! Also, the video is one of my favorites.
16. âI Serve the Baseâ - Future : I really believe every word Future says -__- (this was an autobiography of sorts). Also, this production is everything.
15. âI Donât Mindâ - Usher feat. Juicy JÂ : This song may have come out last year but it gained major traction in 2015... Unapologetic, honest, and simple.
14. âWhat Do You Meanâ - Justin Bieber : Donât get me started on JB. Iâve adored his music for years and Iâm so happy more people are embracing him :3 I freakin loved this song because it was earnest and catchy as hell. Also, he sounds adorable.
12. â679âł - Fetty Wap feat. Monty : This song makes me so happy :) Song of the summer for sure.
11. âDonât @ Meâ - JME feat. Shorty, Frisco and Skepta : The production is on one !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also I love love love the lyrical content #twitterproblems
10. âAntidoteâ - Travis Scott : La Flameâs trademark âoooh oooh oooh oooooh ahhhhâ (1:57) alone makes me rate this song. And his switch-up is everything. #straightup!
9. âSorryâ - Justin Bieber : This is reggaeton-influenced pop at its best, idk what else to say other than that I absolutely adore this song/video <3
8. âHereâ - Alessia Cara : Alessiaâs convincing voice, so full with bravado, spoke to me in a major way. Introverts represent!
7. âGinzaâ - J Balvin : I was cravinggg a reggaeton track that would offer me something different and J Balvin delivered in a really, really big way. Extremely addictive and unique (it was titled after an Instagram filter after all.)
6. âUptown Funkâ - Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars : Really the feel-good song of the year and though it was every.where.I.went., it didnât lose its fun! S/o to Mr. Ronson for the production and a great show of vocals from Bruno Mars.
5. âPost To Beâ - Omarion feat. Chris Brown and Jhene Aiko : My favorite radio-play-heavy, basic-ass song <3 I never tire of this track.Â
4. âShutdownâ - Skepta : SHOUTOUT to Drake for the unreal intro and to Skepta for turning a simple catchphrase into a movement. HUGE, huge song.
3. âOjuelegbaâ - Wizkid : This is a once-in-a-lifetime track for Wizkid. The beat is so breezy, so danceable... the song so carefree and amazing. I will sing its praises forever.
2. âMan Donât Careâ - JME feat. Giggs : Production on a billion, braggadocio on a trillion. I feel so hard going hard on this track... just A1.
1. âWhere Are U Nowâ - Jack Ă feat. Justin Bieber : What else could it be? Diplo and Skrillex are geniuses for this simple yet memorable beat and Justin sounds so pretty... It is sonic *warmth* and at times, simply euphoric. Wish every song could find that balance between being understated and impactful.

2013 surprised me with all of its great music! It took me some time to narrow it down and I managed to make it to a top 40, larger than my lists in the past. So here it is. Enjoy :)
 40. âBlurred Linesâ â Robin Thicke feat. Pharrell and T.I: Iâm not here for the skeevy lyrics but damn this song is groovy. Itâs quite circus-y, very silly, and a 2013 success story.
39. âBodysnatcherâ â AMALIA: A distorted, industrial, soulful song that is slow-burning and ends up putting you in a trance. So good.
38. âSecondary (feat. Problem)â â RL Grime: RL Grime produced a highly underrated monster track with this one. While Problem tried his best with his lighthearted T-Pain-esque auto-tuned singing, the production held all the weight and then some.  Â
37. âWork (feat. BANKS)â â Lil Silva: Yaaaas to this funky dance banger! Iâm automatically transported to some underground LDN party when I hear this song. Gun fingers in air and all. Endless vibes and the start of a bountiful relationship between one of my favorite new artists this year, BANKS, with mega-talented (and mega-cute) Lil Silva.  Â
36. âSuit and Tieâ â Justin Timberlake feat. Jay-Z: The feel-good song of the year! JT started a dapper movement with this one. More than anything, it was a really good stab at the 2013 musical landscape by a legend reentering the game.
35. âFine Chinaâ â Chris Brown: CB is singing is little heart out on this old-school inspired track. The beat gives me major Michael Jackson-vibes and is an undeniably catchy tune.
34. âTwerk Itâ â Busta Rhymes: For having one of the âwords of the yearâ in its title, this song is refreshingly pleasant and enjoyable even! Bustaâs Jamaican patois is brill and the Pharrell-production is perfect and oh so underrated.
33. âCrushâ â Jai Paul: While the circumstances for which this happened absolutely sucked, I was so excited to get an albumâs worth of demos/unfinished songs from mystery man Jai Paul. This song stood out from the rest, albeit it being a cover. He turned it out and breathed new life into this 90s radio hit. It was also great to hear him sing semi-clearly over this funky, guitar-led rework.
32. âVoices (feat. Sasha Keable)â â Disclosure: Can I just say how unbelievable this song is live??! GAWD. Sashaâs soulful, characteristic voice paired with this bouncy and hypnotizing Disclosure beat is magical.
31. âMy Partyâ â Icona Pop feat. Zebra Katz: Icona Popâs album this year was disappointingly underwhelming but this non-album gem was dropped and served as a beacon of hope for what Icona Pop could potentially sound like in the long run. Itâs unapologetic-ly emo-glam, if thatâs a thing. âSad gurlâ anthem status! Â
30. âMirrorsâ â Justin Timberlake: This song may only be on here for the chorus. While it isnât JTâs strongest vocal performance, something about this song just exudes warmth and love. I may have also cried listening to this on occasion⌠Itâs a good kind of familiar without sounding dated or unexciting.
29. âWe Canât Stopâ â Miley Cyrus: Letâs forget lyrical content for a sec. This song is incredibly infectious and is one of my faves of the year because of its brilliant melody. Another undeniably catchy one.Â
28. âBubble Butt (feat. Bruno Mars, Tyga & Mystic)â â Major Lazer: ML proved to be among the most talented creators in 2013 after churning out this unique one. Production is on a 100!! I canât help but dance every time I hear this song. Â
27. â#Beautifulâ â Mariah Carey and Miguel: Mariah and Miguelâs voices together = HONEY. I applaud Mariahâs approach with this recordâshe capitalized on Miguelâs success and the influence alternative sounds in R&B/pop had on music this year to create this under-appreciated breezy jam.
26. âLove & Warâ â Tamar Braxton: Thank you, Tamar for bringing us this soul-stirring R&B ballad! Iâm so happy it became a critical and commercial success. She sang her heart out and really proved to the world that she is more than a reality TV fixture. [note: yes this song came out in 2012 but I had already created my 2012 list by that time :(]
25. âYou Got it Onâ â Justin Timberlake: This is one way I like JT to do music; he sounds so good in a more traditional~ R&B song. Everything about this is so sensory~ and feel-good. I want to slow dance to this like, right now.
24. âWatch Out for This (Bumaye) (feat. Busy Signal, The Flexican & FS Green)â â Major Lazer: Them horns!! Major Lazer took an already amazing riddim and added on Busy Signal for extra hypeness. The end result is a massive moombahton/dancehall banger.
23. âBlack Skinheadâ â Kanye West: I live for the type of production on Yeezus so this track was right up my alley. Purely energetic, deliciously polarizing [bwahahaha], and unapologetic!
22. âGrown Womanâ â BeyoncĂŠ: My girl had a massive 2013 and this anthem was one of my favorite vocal bits of the year. BeyoncĂŠ is so infectiously confident over this Afrobeat-influenced beat! [note: this list was made before she decided to play the world and drop an entire album without telling nobody!! You best believe her new songs will show up on my list next year!]
21. âAlmost is Never Enoughâ â Ariana Grande and Nathan Skyes: This is the big-voice duet I was craving in 2013. Just get enveloped by the R&B-inspired sanging that takes place and youâll understand. Props to Ariana for her vocal technique and choices, my goodness!
20. âMr Loverboyâ â Little Mix: From the best girl group in the world (out right now) comes this super sweet 90s throwback that serves âFantasy â Mariah Careyâ realness. Their harmonies are on point and the melody reminds me of a breezy, summer day <3
19. âKeep It Coolâ â Kelela: 2013 belonged to my fellow Ethiopian, Kelela. She was a critic/blog darling, performed in the most awesome venues, and basically hung out with the coolest people (and also managed to work with HudmoâI canât wait to hear that collab.) This song is one of my favorites from her debut mixtape, Cut for Me. Jam Cityâs yummy synth, atmospheric masterpiece (how else can I describe it?!) perfectly pairs with her unique approach to singing.
18. âAcrylicsâ â TNGHT: Itâs crazy to think that TNGHT released so little after a monumental 2012. So to make the record they dropped this menacing grandiosity was a treat.
17. âBaby Iâ â Ariana Grande: Fun, sugary and energetic! Ariana really proved that sheâs a vocal powerhouse this year.
16. âHurricaneâ â MS MR: Loved this airy, borderline-haunting track. âMSââs voice is so soothing and convincing. Also, âWelcome to the inner workings of my mindâ is like, my favorite lyric of the year.
15. âWhen a Fire Starts to Burnâ â Disclosure: This is pure yumminess. Forget all that sub-genre categorizationâwhatever this is, Disclosure really just made a banger using a random vocal sample of a preacher talking. Itâs a seemingly simple formula but they managed to make it oh so unique.
14. âVersace (Remix)â â Migos feat. Drake: Song of the summer!!! Everything considered, this Drake verse might be my favorite verse of 2013. His braggadocio is so over the top but endearing! I need to s/o Migos for their amazing ad-libsâ âoh sh*t, who that is?â âmetropolis?â âjust wait on it!â âdamn, I look good!â âdonât ask for my opinion!â âbusiness is business!â
13. âNirvanaâ â Sam Smith: I feel immediate warmth when I listen to this song. 2013âs breakout soulful singer Sam Smith had a super bright moment with this seductive, entrancing track.
12. âYouâre No Good (feat. Santigold, Vybz Kartel, Danielle Haim &Yasmin)â â Major Lazer: Clearly Major Lazerâs Free the Universe was among my favorite works of 2013. Though this military-themed song features some very different artists, Major Lazer was able to play to all of their strengths, overlap some mean vocals, and craft this danceable song. Itâs not very EDM as well, which makes it super refreshing.
11. âHey Loveâ â Quadron: Quadronâs soulful and bouncy piano-driven track is one of 2013âs most earnest efforts. I love Cocoâs vocals and all the hand claps on this song.
10. âYou and Me (feat. Eliza Doolittle)â â Disclosure: Garage-y vibes on this lovely song by Disclosure. The echo effects on Elizaâs voice really add something special to this happy, sing-along track.
9. âWork (Remix)â â A$AP Ferg feat. French Montana, Trinidad James, Schoolboy Q, A$AP Rocky: Fergâs charismatic rapping ass really made an impact in 2013 with this and âShabba.â Everything about this song is hype to meâfrom the beat to the adlibs to the metaphors. Just super turnt.
8. âScare Me (feat. Peaches & Timberlee)â â Major Lazer: A ridiculous electro-ska mashup that is my badass female anthem of the year!
7. âLife Round Hereâ â James Blake: Itâs a special feat for something so entirely digital-sounding to create such a feeling of warmness. The mood James sets with his voice is brilliant and the musical climactic explosion that occurs near the end of the song is among my favorite bits of music ever, I wanna say. The build-up is crazy!
6. âBank Head (feat. Kelela)â â Kingdom: What can I say that hasnât been said about this? The production on this is perfect and Kelelaâs voice is so transcendent, it all just takes us there (hear: âand I need to let it out.â) Itâs dark, itâs dreamy and airy, and itâs promising of whatâs to come for Fade to Mind, Kingdomâs record label.
5. âMoveâ â Little Mix: I fell in love with this song the moment I heard it, as it reminded me so much of Girls Aloud (who are in my top 3 best girl groups ever!) Applause goes to these girls for their part in creating such a massive, progressive pop songâcowbells and all! So, so fun.
4. âRetrogradeâ â James Blake: The return of James Blake from his STELLAR debut album back in 2011 was the most exciting reentry to music in 2013 for me. What he created here, lyrically and musically, is mesmerizing. âSuddenly Iâm hitâ matches so perfectly with its musical complement in the background. Losing yourself in the song is easy when his voice is that hypnotic.
3. âThis is What it Feels Likeâ - BANKS: BANKS is my favorite new artist of 2013 and this is the reason why: the delicacy of her approach and the transparency of her emotions are palpable. Major props to producers Lil Silva and Jamie Woon for crafting a woozy and haunting backdrop for her masterful voice. I look forward for whatâs ahead from BANKS.
2. âNew Slavesâ â Kanye West: This is the most HAM-effort of the year. The starkness of the beat paired with âYeâs venomous delivery... a lot of what he says doesnât matter to people but he forces you to shift your perspective and believe every direct message he puts out. Too raw.
1. âWhite Noise (feat. AlunaGeorge)â - Disclosure: Absolutely euphoric! Disclosureâs Settle was my favorite album of the year and somehow, âWhite Noiseâ rummaged through the perfection on the album to emerge as my absolute favorite. Itâs game-changing, super fresh, catchy, trance-y⌠just everything I love in a song and more. A perfect underground staple and a chart-topper, at the same damn time :â)
