Quickly making his way through basic training he is dropped in the middle of the conflict. Private LaRusso is assigned to platoon 101, where lieutenant Silver places him into squad 1, known affectionately as the Cobras. They are led by sergeant Kreese, a man whose ruthless and questionable orders are passed onto the subordinates he commands. There he meets his fellow soldiers, a group of 7 boys around his age who got stuck in this mess just like him.

Of the seven, he finds Private Lawrence especially difficult to work with, constantly questioning his actions and blind loyalty to their commanding officer. Through their time living, working, and escaping certain death together Daniel sees glimpses of the boys they used to be and comes to understand who is the real enemy.

The end would conclude with an act known as fragging “the deliberate or attempted killing of a soldier, usually a superior, by a fellow soldier.” Eventually they reach a breaking point, done suffering from the cruelty of Sergeant Kreese and Lieutenant Silver, the squad concludes that their only way out is by eliminating them. After triggering a massive explosion that takes of the lives of both Silver and Kreese, Daniel, Johnny, and the rest of the squad is discharge back home.
