He spends most of his life overshadowed and neglected due to both his sisters' magic and Hawke's role as the responsible firstborn. The sister he more or less gets along with dies, and then he has to flee to a foreign country only to become an indentured servant to criminals. And then he has to keep putting up with his big sister's mouthy bullshit for over a year while ducking the magic gestapo who would be leaving them the hell alone if not for her flagrant apostasy.

But it's fine, because Carver is a big boy. Their debt's been paid, work is consistent, there's even a flirty pirate and a pretty elf girl that catch his eye. Once they pull off that big expedition, the whole family will be loaded, and he can really start making his own way in the world without his sister looming over him. Even though almost every decision she makes feels like it was intentionally made to piss him off, everything's coming up Carver!

Only for his sister to shut him out of their big break and bench his whiny ass so dearest mama won't get worried, in spite of his skill and his years of protective loyalty. So he says fuck it and joins the Templars that have caused his family nothing but grief, just as much to spite the bitch and have some modicum of power over her as for his own personal growth.

And then Carver works his ass off for years, putting in the effort, doing things "right" to make a name and a future for himself, all the while his sister is getting up to dubiously legal shenanigans (that she is able to avoid the consequences of due in no small part to her personal wealth and connections with law enforcement/politicians/business interests). Through a complicated series of events, this results in both the death of their mother and elevating Hawke to such a position of fame and influence that she can openly defy the thing that finally equalizes them, the thing that might even elevate him above her in his mind.

While she's doing that, her dirtbag lesbian ass fucks the flirty pirate and uhauls the pretty elf girl he was crushing on into their ancestral mansion that she also now owns, the bedroom of which alone is at least twice the size of Carver's shared cell at the Gallows. And then after a few more years of stewing in resentment and only seeing each other in person once (the reason for which was dragging him into a conspiracy full of blight and blood magic), she helps the unemployed heretical abomination who's been orbiting her for the past 6+ years (a man who Carver finds utterly insufferable on both a personal and professional level) kill Carver's boss in public and subsequently incite a sectarian revolt on a continental scale.
