El Mirage dry lake is one of Shinya’s and my favorite places on earth since we came and experienced the very first land speed racing 16 years ago.

It was a great shakedown pass of 120.3/mph. We were all super excited for the second pass but the race was canceled due to high winds 😭 Oh, well. At least we could know that we were in the right direction so all is good.

色々変えたりアップグレードしたばかりなので、抑えめの慣らし1走目はいい感じの192km。やった甲斐があったと嬉しい気持ちで2走目に期待するも、強風でレースはキャンセルに。ま、1本走れただけでも良しとしますか。ボンネビルに期待。

Shinya has been absorbed in preparing Sepia the Knucklehead for the upcoming race at El Mirage dry lake. I’m pretty sure he said it was a plan for the next year but somehow Sepia now has a dual carb. 😳😳😳 He also changed/upgraded many other things to make it faster.

ボンネビル、スピードウィークに向けて「レースの準備ナッコー編」に没頭中の木村氏。まずはドライレイクでの6月のレースで走らせたい。たしか来年ツインキャブにしようかなって言っているのを聞いたことあるけど、もうなっている。急にノリノリスゥイッチが入った形跡アリ。その他にも色々とアップグレード。

He’s also the owner of Crystal Trophy, the SR500/400 that Shinya has built several years ago.

2年半かもっと振りに友人と山乗りに行けて最高な日曜日。友人は数年前に木村氏が制作したヤマハSR400/500ベースの「クリスタル・トロフィー」のオーナーでもある。

The reason why Crystal Trophy is still at our workshop is that when Shinya build this, he was imagining the owner, our friend, riding dashingly an SR through the canyon to Crystal Lake so this project will not be completed until we see the owner rides it up there. We've tried before but there was always something standing in the way, like running out of time, sudden weather changes, minor mechanical problems, etc., and then the pandemic... So we still haven’t achieved it yet.

完成したはずなのになぜ未だにチャボにあるかと言うと、木村氏はこの友人がSRでクリスタルレイクまでの山道をヒラヒラと乗る姿を思い描いて制作にあたったので、その姿を拝むまではこのプロジェクトはコンプリートしない、ということで今まで何度かトライしているのに、ある時は時間切れ、ある時はちょっとしたメカトラブル、またある時は途中でお天気が突然悪化など、さまざまな理由で叶わずにいたため。そうこうしている内にパンデミック… (↑ここまでは何度か来ているけど、これより上のクリスタルレイクまでどうしても行けず)

So, this would be our 4th attempt and today was the day. We passed Crystal Lake and made it to Crystal Lake Cafe on the top! Finally, the project was completed. 👏🏼

そしてついに、クリスタル茶屋まで到着。今までなぜ来られなかったのか不思議なくらいすんなりと、4度目の正直。これで念願のクリスタル・トロフィープロジェクトは完成！めでたし👏🏼

TK, the owner of the Shovelhead project is back in America for the upcoming races of ARCA Menards Series West. He’s commuting back and forth from Japan and California and racing year-round through the West Coast.

ショベルプロジェクトTKのオーナー、Kガ氏がARCAメナーズ・シリーズ・ウェストのレース参戦のためアメリカに戻って来られた。日本とアメリカを行ったり来たりしながらフルタイムでレースに挑むさすらいのレーサー。カッコイイ。週末のレース、応援しています！

TK took time out from his busy schedule and stopped by our workshop for the second fitting session. The project is starting to take shape more than the last time he was here. And glad he liked it! That’s the most important thing and it won't happen if they have a one-way relationship.

Not only watching TK racing but also seeing him interacts with fans up to the very last minute before the race starts and right after the race, right after the fierce battle of tension, Shinya said he was very amazed, surprised and moved. Seeing and knowing various aspects of TK, Shinya developed his imagination and seek what style suits TK, and started working on the project. After a while, when the rider sits on it and feels just right, that's another Ah-ha moment for Shinya. Yay

今回もお忙しいスケジュールの合間を縫って、2回目のフィッティングに立ち寄ってくださった。ショベルは前回よりもだいぶ進んで、形がほぼ出来上がっている状態。気に入ってくださってひと安心。どんなに作り手がイイでしょうースゴイでしょうーと自信満々でも、乗り手が良い、好き、乗りたい！と感じてくれなければまったく意味がないので、一方通行にならないようにオーナーとの関係性を築くのもとても大切。

Kガ氏が実際にレースをしている姿を何度か観させていただいているのはもちろんのこと、レースがスタートするギリギリまでファンサービスに徹し、周りを気遣い、あの緊迫のレースが終わっても休む間もなくすぐに応援してくれているファンを喜ばせている姿を見て、木村氏はとても驚いていた。そういう乗り手の色んな面を見て木村氏が感じた「こういうのに乗ったら似合うんじゃないかな」を形にしているつもりなのだそう。それが本当にマッチした時は例のアハー波が大量に出るらしい。出てよかったアハーハ😆

Anyway, the last time TK was at our workshop he took the seat pan that Shinya made back to Japan with him and took it to our mutual friend BACKDROP Leathers in Nagoya himself. This time, he received the freshly made seat from Ace of BACKDROP and brought it back to us. Ace is having hard time getting leathers for motorcycle seats nowadays but he managed to make one with his treasured leather to make it happen. What a teamwork! We love you, Ace!🙏🏼

さらに、前回Kガ氏がシートパンを自ら名古屋の共通の友人、BACKDROPまで届けてくださり、今回は出来上がったシートを受け取ってチャボまで届けてくださったので、出来立てホヤホヤのシートを装着。(現在革が手に入りにくい状況と聞いているのでダメもとでお願いしてみたのですが、手持ちの革でどうにか間に合うよう工夫してくださったBACKDROPのAce氏の心意気と氏の技術に感謝🙏🏼いつも無理言って困らせてごめんなさい🙇🏻🙇🏽‍♀️シート小さめでよかったー)

今回はスウェードでお願いしました。

So this motorbike is the end result of what Shinya saw and felt through the relationship with TK. In another word, this wouldn't be born without TK’s presence. If it's for someone else, it wouldn't be like this, right? To me, it’s very interesting every time.

これが木村氏が感じた「Takuma Koga」を形にしたオートバイということなんだな。確かになんかKガ氏に見えてきた！と言ったらバカじゃないのと一喝されたよ、しょぼーん🥹　でもほんとにKガ氏っぽいオートバイだと思う。毎回、このオーナーがいなければこのオートバイも生まれなかったと木村氏は言う。そしてそれがとても不思議で面白いといつも思う。

Okay, race prep. Shinya found a big cam that he wanted to try out on Tommy’s TR6, the land speed racer, and we needed to modify almost everything to make it fit. Big thanks to specialists Dan of Franz and Grubb Engine and Lief of Lief Racing for their wisdom and generous support to make it happen.

さて、トミーゴー号。センパイにピッタリな漢の勲章みたいなビッグでグレートなカムを見つけてしまった木村氏。どうしてもボンネビルで試したい。けど、色々加工したり削ったりしないと収まらない勲章。トライアンフのエキスパートでランドスピード仲間でもあるFAGのDやLief RacingのLの惜しみない協力のもと、なんとかいけそうな予感。

Came to Dan’s shop to pick up dynamically balanced flywheels and modified cylinder, cases, etc. Many real tips and advice from the record holders are priceless. Super grateful and lucky to have knowledgeable friends like them.

Dのショップにダイナミックバランスをとったフライウィールや加工したシリンダーなんかを取りに来た。レコードホルダーからのアドバイスめちゃくちゃありがたい。「みんなと同じことしてちゃ、同じスピードしか出せないだろ。だからお前たちみたいなクレイジーなことするやつらを応援したいんだ！」と言ってくれたけど、そんなクレイジーなつもりは一切ないのでビビる💦ふつー、そう、ふつーに去年より速くしたいだけなのよ。こんな勲章カム入れちゃってるけどさ。

Back to our workshop and Shinya is pretty enthusiastic to spend some time with the engine, measuring and checking all the way down the line. Blissful time. (At the same time he’s a bit nervous, too).

We are not professional racers. Racing is our hobby. We are doing this for fun. However, as privateers, our time and budget are limited, and I know it’s easy to say but continuing to do is not so easy. These guys, Shinya, Taka, who is prepping Challenger and Datsun 240Z, and Tommy and Dude who are coming from Japan just for this, and The Bradburns who are great supporters and teammates, I just respect their genuine passion and love for speed, motorbikes, and cars, and feel pretty lucky to be part of it as a crew.

first time in two years that we’ve been looking forward to.

Shinya’s 1915 Indian was all set.

ずっと楽しみにしていた中央カリフォルニアでのライド。準備ばっちりの木村氏は1915年のインディアンで参加。

However, I didn't have time to prepare my motorbike for this two-day ride but thought it would be ok since my Triumph is a daily commuter bike.

•

しかしながらこの2dayライドの前はバタバタしていて、筆者のビワ号は乗りっぱなしのままで参加。いつも調子良く走っているんだから大丈夫と自信満々で。

Only today of all days 😭 My loquat began to act up and couldn't catch up with the pack and lost sight of everyone 😭 It wasn’t the engine, maybe something was wrong with the clutch or something. My Triumph never had this kind of problem before so I couldn't figure out. Now I'm all by myself...

そしてビワ号、早々に経験したことのない絶不調になる。エンジンじゃない感じ。クラッチかな、もうわからない...今日に限って...😭ガビン　ついに皆を見失い、知らない道でぼっちアローン😭

Shinya noticed that I wasn’t in the pack and came back for me on his 1915 Indian. Now we are both separated from the group and didn’t know the exact route for today💦

筆者が消えたことに気づいた木村氏がインディアンで戻って来てくれた！まさか15年のオートバイの方が調子が良いとは😳　これで二人とも完全に群れからはぐれてしまった...今日のルートはざっくりしか知らないのに💦

We decided to go back to the staging base, fix my motorbike and ride up to the place where everyone will have lunch. It started to look like the Cannonball though Shinya’s Indian was on a roll 🥹 Sorry, Shinya🙏🏼

とりあえずベース基地に戻って直して、唯一わかっているランチの場所でみんなと合流しようということに。ベースに戻るまでもひと苦労だったぜ💦 なんだかキャノンボールみたいになってきた。インディアンは絶好調だというのに🥹 ほんとソーリー🙏🏼

Found some problems around transmission and primary chain area that require replacing some parts and Shinya wanted to take it back to our workshop to work on them. However, he tried to fix it temporarily so that I could ride a bit more today or at least ride down to the lunch spot. A couple of hours struggling, he decided not to push himself too hard since it wasn’t the Cannonball. So, unfortunately, our central-Cal ride was over.

どうも何かを引きずっている感じで、ミッション関連とか色々本格的に直さなきゃならなそう🥲応急処置でなんとかしようとずっと奮闘してくれた木村氏。結局キャノンボールじゃないので無理をせず、ライドは諦めて帰ってからちゃんと直すことに。楽しみにしていた2年ぶりのライドはここで終了ちーん🛎

Shinya’s Indian was in a pretty good condition, I knew he wanted to keep riding 😊 So he went for a ride by himself.

折角セントラル・カリフォルニアまで来て、さらにはインディアンの調子が良いのにまったく乗り足りない木村。ちょっと乗ってくる💨とイソイソ出ていった😊

Too bad we couldn't ride with them but seeing everyone would be enough joy for us ☺️

一緒に乗れなかったのは残念だったけど、久しぶりに皆んなの顔が見れて、同じ時間を過ごせて、来てよかったな。

We look forward to seeing them all again next year. And RIDE with them, of course.

It took a while this time for Shinya to hit upon a good idea around the headlight area but once he decides what to do, he's unstoppable.

そして、こんな感じに落ち着いた。

Despite his busy schedule before the race at Bakersfield Speedway, the owner of the shovelhead stopped by to see the progress.

•

ベーカーズフィールドでのレース前のタイトなスケジュールの合間を縫って、ショベルプロジェクトのオーナーTK氏が経過を見に寄ってくださった。

Shinya just finished the seat pan so it was a good opportunity for a fitting session with the owner to have him sit and see the overall balance, foot placement, etc. And also Shinya can visually confirm if the character of the bike and the owner’s vibe fuse together well.

However, considering the time and distance between the owners’ location and ours, having this kind of fitting session is not always possible, unfortunately...

ちょうど良いタイミングでシートパンが出来ていたので、跨った時の全体的なバランスや足つきなどをフィッティング。オーナーの身長や足の長さなどは毎回ざっくり把握していますが、可能であればこうやって実際に跨っている姿を見られると理想的。サイズ感はもちろんのこと、オーナーの雰囲気にバイクが合っているかどうかが何より重要。

ただ海外や遠方に住んでいらっしゃる方も多いので、この、途中で跨ってもらうというワクワクモーメントはそうそう簡単には叶わないのですが...

Anyway, thank you, TK for making time for this! It's very inspiring for Shinya to meet the owner in person and get to know him/her better. Making each owner happy is his motivation to keep going. If it had not been for his clients, he would not have been able to make anything so special, he always says. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

ということで、TK氏にお会いする度にパワーをいただき、カッコイイもの作るぞ！と気持ちが高まる木村氏。この、ひとりの方に喜んでもらえるための一台を作る、というのが毎回木村氏のモチベーションになっているのだとか。自分のためにだったら絶対に作れないといつも言っている。

Shinya has decided to take a break from the shovel project for a while to clear his mind. He says when he starts thinking too much, it's time for him to refresh his mind and do something else. As long as to him, thinking too much will not lead in good direction.

ショベルプロジェクトのヘッドライト周りをどうするか、何か迷いがある時は考えすぎてロクデモナイことをしがちなので、いったん考えるのをやめるらしい。考えすぎるってことはコレダ！という強い思いがない時だから、前に進めなくなるんだって。こうなると思いっきり集中できてスッキリできることをやりたくなっちゃう木村氏。

So he moved on to... RACE PREP 🏁

We are planning to put a twin carb on Tommy’s Triumph for the upcoming salt flats race and Shinya needs to make a intake manifold for it 🛠

Wow! We got so excited! Shinya will keep prepping and hopefully try it out on the dry lake before Speed Week. Not in May but in June or July 🤞🏼

Now his mind is fresh and clear, he's ready to go back to the shovel project. He calls it “a-ha moment” ☺️
