first time in two years that we’ve been looking forward to.

Shinya’s 1915 Indian was all set.

ずっと楽しみにしていた中央カリフォルニアでのライド。準備ばっちりの木村氏は1915年のインディアンで参加。

However, I didn't have time to prepare my motorbike for this two-day ride but thought it would be ok since my Triumph is a daily commuter bike.

しかしながらこの2dayライドの前はバタバタしていて、筆者のビワ号は乗りっぱなしのままで参加。いつも調子良く走っているんだから大丈夫と自信満々で。

Only today of all days 😭 My loquat began to act up and couldn't catch up with the pack and lost sight of everyone 😭 It wasn’t the engine, maybe something was wrong with the clutch or something. My Triumph never had this kind of problem before so I couldn't figure out. Now I'm all by myself...

そしてビワ号、早々に経験したことのない絶不調になる。エンジンじゃない感じ。クラッチかな、もうわからない...今日に限って...😭ガビン　ついに皆を見失い、知らない道でぼっちアローン😭

Shinya noticed that I wasn’t in the pack and came back for me on his 1915 Indian. Now we are both separated from the group and didn’t know the exact route for today💦

筆者が消えたことに気づいた木村氏がインディアンで戻って来てくれた！まさか15年のオートバイの方が調子が良いとは😳　これで二人とも完全に群れからはぐれてしまった...今日のルートはざっくりしか知らないのに💦

We decided to go back to the staging base, fix my motorbike and ride up to the place where everyone will have lunch. It started to look like the Cannonball though Shinya’s Indian was on a roll 🥹 Sorry, Shinya🙏🏼

とりあえずベース基地に戻って直して、唯一わかっているランチの場所でみんなと合流しようということに。ベースに戻るまでもひと苦労だったぜ💦 なんだかキャノンボールみたいになってきた。インディアンは絶好調だというのに🥹 ほんとソーリー🙏🏼

Found some problems around transmission and primary chain area that require replacing some parts and Shinya wanted to take it back to our workshop to work on them. However, he tried to fix it temporarily so that I could ride a bit more today or at least ride down to the lunch spot. A couple of hours struggling, he decided not to push himself too hard since it wasn’t the Cannonball. So, unfortunately, our central-Cal ride was over.

どうも何かを引きずっている感じで、ミッション関連とか色々本格的に直さなきゃならなそう🥲応急処置でなんとかしようとずっと奮闘してくれた木村氏。結局キャノンボールじゃないので無理をせず、ライドは諦めて帰ってからちゃんと直すことに。楽しみにしていた2年ぶりのライドはここで終了ちーん🛎

Shinya’s Indian was in a pretty good condition, I knew he wanted to keep riding 😊 So he went for a ride by himself.

折角セントラル・カリフォルニアまで来て、さらにはインディアンの調子が良いのにまったく乗り足りない木村。ちょっと乗ってくる💨とイソイソ出ていった😊

Too bad we couldn't ride with them but seeing everyone would be enough joy for us ☺️

一緒に乗れなかったのは残念だったけど、久しぶりに皆んなの顔が見れて、同じ時間を過ごせて、来てよかったな。

We look forward to seeing them all again next year. And RIDE with them, of course.

英国フォード　コルティナ

Shinya‘s Cortina has been sleeping for quite some time but he was motivated to finish up swapping the GT engine to Lotus engine by seeing these lively Cortinas. Maybe next year 😉

木村氏の英国フォード　コルティナはしばらく眠ったまま。GTエンジンをロータスエンジンに載せ替えると言いながらなかなか進まない。来年こそはここに並べたいと刺激を受けつつも、最初にこの英車ミートに来てから何年経ったかな。

Shinya hasn’t even found the donor bike for the next sporty project yet but he has already decided the tyres and rims for it ☺️

Whenever he gets tired he takes a nap with his favorite shop cat to recharge. He lives a simple life 😉

- The beginning of the new journey -

Taking the transmission and the engine out from the skeleton shovel. It’s a backbreaking work but he does everything himself because “I can still do it myself,” he says. And that way he can grasp everything about the bike and process and that’s very important to him. Of course, he does outsource on the things he can not do himself like metal plating, powder coating, seat covering, etc. but he won't ask to do it if he doesn't know what he wants.

Anyway, now it's completely in pieces, I can't wait to see what happens next!

スケルトン状態のショベル・プロジェクトからトランスミッションとエンジンをおろす。こういう力仕事は年々骨身に染みてくる作業ではありますが、自分で出来るうちは全部自分で。まあ、他にやる人がいないんだから当たり前だけど、自分でやるということで、そのバイクや制作過程をぜーんぶ把握できる、ということが重要なんだって。もちろん自分じゃできないことを外にお願いすることもあるけれど、こうしたいというのがはっきりしていなければ頼めないし、頼まない。

普段は90%以上曖昧で出来ているのでは？と思えるほどなんでもどうでもいい派の木村氏、ものを作るとなると別人格を出してきますな。さて、これがどうなっていくのかとても楽しみ！

Tinkering with 1915 Indian at night. He says he’s enjoying his hobby time but to me, it's very difficult to see the line between his hobby, work and play. Well, then we don't need to draw dividing lines. In fact, our lives are pretty much balanced so all is good 😊

夜な夜な1915年インディアンを愛でる。趣味の時間と言うけれど… 仕事、遊び、趣味、いったいどこに境界線があるのやら。まあ、そんな線、引かなくたっていいのだけれど。線はなくとも案外メリハリのある日々を送っている、それが大切なのかも。
