Our school absolutely did this. We had a big staged crash in front of the school in the morning, and no one knew if it was real or not at first. Then throughout the day theyâd randomly pull kids and put them in white face paint. Those were the dead kids. We werenât allowed to talk to them. At the middle of the day they had an assembly.Â
One extra thing though: in our scenario, it was specifically about drunk driving, and the kid who played the âdrunk driverâ actually spent a night in jail, fully immersed in the idea that heâd killed his best friend (another one of the student council members who played the part of one of the original accident deaths). So at the assembly, they had footage of him in a jail holding cell at the police station, sobbing and inconsolable, because it felt that real to him. He basically broke down on stage and his best friend (who wasnât really dead of course but who hadnât been in school all day so as not to spoil the reality of the situation) had to come on stage and like. Make him calm down. Then there were speeches and things, I donât really remember the rest that vividly. I just know that yeah we absolutely did this, and it kind of messed us up for the day.Â
I actually also remember our history teacher, usually this really gruff and stern dude, being really funny and uncharacteristically goofy that day. Iâm pretty sure he was trying to cheer us up because no joke we were pretty traumatized by the whole thing.Â
For context, this wouldâve been in 1998. Maybe it was like. A fad back then that they donât do anymore?Â
