A brief Intro to Google Chrome Developer Tools
Since I botched the explanation in the previous post, hereās a better explanation.Ā Other browsers have similar tools, but Chrome tends to have really good options.Ā Ā
First, find an element in question, right click on it, and clickĀ āInspectā.
Depending on the exact configuration, itās likely youāll see three different windows
The DOM Tree / HTML code (Upper left) The Styles (Upper Right) The Console (Bottom)
Whatās good about this is that you can dynamically try out new stylesĀ without fighting with the code and constantly reloading.
Letās say I donāt like the text in my intro.

On the right, we can see the styles in effect on it:
Now, for colors, you can manually type in a HEX, rbg, or rbga, or, you can click on the square to bring up a color picker.
So, letās click on the white square beside the color white, under theĀ ābegin-buttonā class:
Here, we can pick a color and get information about Contrast.Ā If we click on the Contrast ratio, itāll dynamically show us what colors will qualify for AA accessibility, AAA accessibility, and what colors are not considered accessible.

Developer tools have a lot under the hood, and itās definitely worth exploring if you find yourself developing themes, or just tinkering around with yours.

The Good: I love the way the aesthetic imitates the menus in LM3! Thatās great. Even though the links are symbols (circles), they are easy to find.
Some Pointers: Just one quick thing!
I would advise maybe changing the body text (by which I mean the post text, screencap below) might help folks read the theme a bit better! I would suggest closer to a pink (by which I mean, a less saturated, more tinted red, perhaps the hex code #fed5cd) As it is, red text on a black background may be difficult to read.

As the person who did make the meme I feel slightly obligated to jump in, lol--I didnāt intend for people to send it to this blog but Iām always happy to help out.
The Good:
ā All links are working and clickable ā Rules and about are clickable and discoverable on mobile ā Theme resizes gracefully (to a point; itās inevitable that itāll fail after a while) ā Blog posts are well spaced apart ā Tags and relevant info are easy to find ā Pagination is easy to find ā No autoplay ā I find it aesthetically pleasing; very nice to look at :)
Concerns:
ā The description box doesnāt immediately appear to be scrollable.Ā A lack of scroll bars is an accessibility issue; but since thereās redundancy in the links itās not a real issue ā Be careful with red and green for colorblind users ā The grid background may cause eye strain for some users ā As rp-meme-source mentioned above, the font color may be an issue.Ā The suggested color is good, but developer tools are your friend.Ā The most important point for accessibility is contrastĀ and at the very least, Google Chrome will calculate this for you.
Right click on a section of text
FindĀ āStylesā on the right-hand side
Scroll until you find an element that has both aĀ ācolorā and aĀ ābackground colorā element
Click on the color box
Click onĀ āContrast RatioāĀ (It may take a few tries to get an element that will give you this information.)
Chrome will calculate and suggest good colors for you to use.
I can make a photo-tutorial for this if anyone would like, but it made this post a bit clunky.
Redesigning:
When it comes to designing a theme, or blog, or any website, it depends on how nitty-gritty you want to get.Ā A lotĀ goes into UX/UI design and I wouldnāt expect any theme developer to go through all that, but there are some steps you can take; such as wireframing, which is basically just sketching out the main elements on a paper to see how theyād fit on a page.
Some things to keep in mind:
š¼ The post-container should be the biggest thing by far, and probably mostly centered. š¼ Users are likely to ignore excessively large content, especially if itās placed at the top of the screen or the sides. š¼ The more important the information is, the easier it should be to find. š¼ Personally, I hateĀ having to hover for information--I prefer it all being there visible at a glance.Ā But this is a personal choice; thereās nothing really wrongĀ with having to hover for more information š¼ CSS Animations or a touch of Javascript can go a long way towards making a blog memorable without being overwhelming š¼ It really all depends on the image you want to create and having the motivation to make it happen.Ā You can do it, trust me.
