Justice for Pitaya
I’m writing today with shaking hands, after someone on the cat lovers group I’m in shared the horrific story of what happened to their cats Pitaya, and how few consideration and help they are getting from the police. Please, help me spread Pitaya’s story and the petition to bring justice to this little ball of fur.
Translation of Pitaya’s story, shared by her owners:
TW for animal death and violence
Pitaya was born in Chetumal, Mexico on February 27, 2019.
My daughter and her friend Solène were looking to adopt a kitten, after five meetings with kitties for adoption, they discovered Pitaya, a little blonde and redhead furball with unparalleled charm. But make no mistake, it was Pitaya who chose her new family by nestling in their arms and engaging her purring engine. Their story was beginning.
They left for Majahual, a two-hour trip by Mexican bus, Pitaya in a travel bag, Sarah and Solène a little worried by this long journey. But immediately, this princess revealed her docile character; her little head out of the bag, she watched the landscape go by and seemed to thank her new mothers for this adventure with a look brimming with tenderness. They spent five months in huts facing the sea, inseparable, Pitaya accompanied them everywhere as long as it was not dangerous for her.
Then my daughter’s internship ended, papers in order, they both traveled in the cabin to Quebec! Again Pitpit did not flinch, calm, relaxed, an Angel. A radical change, the cold, the snow, no more outings; no matter what, Mademoiselle breathed the joy of living, especially since her second mother Solène had also returned from Mexico.
In December 2019, my daughter came to join me in France, another cabin trip for this little being, she dazzled all the flight staff with her calm and gentleness … 24 hours of travel to reach her grandma, 24 hours during which she never cried or scratched to get out of her bag apart from the times when my daughter took her out on a leash to stretch her legs and quench her thirst. My three cats were waiting for her and gave her the best possible welcome, she had grown up since we met in Mexico. She immediately found her marks and we were all swimming in absolute bliss.
May 03, 2020, first day of good weather after two weeks of rain, such a beautiful light. It was a Sunday, we were finally enjoying our beautiful countryside in the garden. But happiness is so fragile …. 2:15 p.m., two mastiffs appeared out of nowhere, entered our garden at high speed, I remember the surprise and my fear when I found myself facing one of them .
And then the horror began, the second had grabbed Pitaya in his mouth, I knew immediately that she would have no chance in the face of such monsters. My screams surprised me, they were nothing human. I was running, falling, getting up, running again; my daughter’s heartbreaking screams mingled with mine …
Pitaya had become a rag doll between the fangs of these two dogs. One of them jostled me, trampled me and the one holding Pitaya fled towards the village, my daughter running desperately behind him screaming.
It was nightmarish.
Pitaya died this Sunday May 03, 2020, under the violence of two Argentine mastiffs left in total freedom in the countryside by their owner, owner who denies any part of responsibility despite the lifeless body of Pitaya that we presented to her when she came to pick up his dogs.
In shock it took me several days, until my daughter, worried about my difficulty in breathing, took me to the emergency room, to find that this dog had broken my 6th rib.
On May 16, 2020 these two dogs returned, tried to kill our neighbors’ dog despite the high walls surrounding their garden and attacked Blacknoze, my cat, crushing of the tissues, a heavy operation was able to save him.
We have taken ALL the necessary steps with the authorities of our department to have these dogs moved. The owners deny everything in spite of our evidence and our witnesses.
We have asked for help from animal welfare associations which unfortunately cannot do anything.
Pitaya’s death, Blacknoze’s injury and my bodily injuries, not to mention our psychological distress are not enough ……
What are the courts waiting for to intervene in our case? THE DEATH OF A CHILD?
We ask #JusticePourPitaya !!!
