#RoadsideOddities trip second stop- the #TitanicTexasTribute to the crucifixion of Jesus. A #giganticcross, which can be seen from the freeway, overlooks a dozen or so statues of Jesus in various states before being crucified. #onlyintexas (at The Cross At Groom)
Luis and I embark on our #RoadsideOddities trip from Dallas to #Amarillo. First stop is the #LeaningWaterTower in #GroomTX. Not as touristy as the one in Pisa. (at Leaning Water Tower)
Day 4, we visit the Sian Ka’an Nature Reserve, just south of Tulum. It´s technically our first beach day, which explains why we´re still so pasty. THIS was a beach, and what a beach it was. I’d been generally disappointed by the exclusivity of private hotel beaches that charge a ridiculous amount of money to step foot on their sands or force you to buy overpriced food and drinks. Not to mention hotels on the coast are such eyesores.
Sian Ka’an was far from touristy. A virgin beach on one side, a vast lagoon on the other, and not a single soul in sight. We were barely on the beach for an hour when something caught our attention. Was the grilled fish I smell? Our noses led us to a small beach bar run by a local Mayan family. Fresh lemonade, quesadillas right off the grill, homemade sauces, and to top it off, Yucatan-style sea bass made with tomatoes, onions, and red peppers.
The adventure doesn’t end here, just because it’s a lazy beach day. We’re off to tour the humongous lagoon. Our local guide takes us in his little motor boat for some manatee and bird-watching. While I’m simultaneously applying SPF 70 sunscreen to my already burnt shoulders and taking in the natural beauty all around, our guide tells us stories of his childhood on the Mayan reserve. The sun starts to set and we head back to the dock to end a perfect day.
Day 3 in paradise. We visited two beautiful cenotes: Gran Cenote and Cenote dos ojos. Having lived super close to the Mexico-US border for nearly 20 years, I couldn’t believe I had never heard of the word “cenote” before (or actually known of their existence). A natural sinkhole, usually in a dense, humid forest, formed in limestone caves, cenotes on the Yucatan Peninsula are a godsend. In the tropical yucateco climate, who could pass up a refreshing dip to swim with the turtles and observe some bats?
After Gran Cenote we stopped for lunch in the town of Tulum and I devoured plate of a Pollo Adobado, an incredibly flavorful Yucatan dish. After eating out for three days straight, I quickly realized everything except ceviche comes with a side of rice, beans, fresh avocados and tortillas, like it or not. Good thing I like everything.
Last stop of the day was Cenote dos ojos - lack of photos due to too much fun exploring and snorkeling around the deep, dark caverns.
Day Two in the Yucatan Peninsula: the Mayan ruins of Cobá in the jungle and Tulum on the beach, with a stop for lunch in between.

We’re on vacation! First stop, Isla Mujeres.
Americans love Mexican food. We consume nachos, tacos, burritos, tortas, enchiladas, tamales and anything resembling Mexican in enormous quantities. We love Mexican beverages, happily knocking back huge amounts of tequila, mezcal and Mexican beer every year. We love Mexican people—as we sure...
I just discovered my hero's blog. Thank you tumblr. And coincidentally I'll be taking off for Mexico in less than a week!
Mardi Gras, day 2. We find ourselves out and about on Bourbon street with the weirdos and the tourists, taken away by the carnival spirit. It´s Sunday, but nobody's resting in New Orleans.
The Endymion Parade was our first taste of Mardi Gras. Thoroughly enjoying myself, fighting over beads with little kids, dancing, and people-watching.
It's been five long years since the first time I went to New Orleans. I'm overjoyed and super anxious to go back! Tomorrow can't come sooner.
Anyone still around the house of the rising sun on esplanade?

Where am I? One moment I was daydreaming in the car on yet another cold New York day, the next I found myself in Washington Heights, being led up some old, mosaic lined staircase, and into a dark hallway. The first door on the right opened up for us and we were welcomed in by the melancholic voice of a man singing in the intimate jazz parlor.
Dozens of people spilled out of the small living room into the kitchen and halls. Ms. Marjorie Eliot was playing a slow tune on the piano. The lights were low and the mood was solemn until the jazz quartet emerged from the back of the apartment. The Sunday tradition of a woman who's been holding concerts in her house for the past 20 years or so.
I just found the most incredible place in New York, by far.
The Little Italy of the Bronx was one of my favorite neighborhoods during my trip to New York. Walking down Arthur Avenue, lined with bakeries, mom & pop shops, and delis, I briefly thought about the possibility of living here. Then a chilling wind blew past and swept the idea away with it. Sorry New York, you’re gorgeous but just too cold in the wintertime.
