Recent archaeological research has revealed that the ancient double-hulled boat (catamaran) excavated earlier this year in the northern province of Bắc Ninh in Vietnam is approximately 1,800 to 1,600 years old and represents a technical legacy of the Đông Sơn people. The exact age has yet to be determined by C14 analysis, but initial estimates suggest that the boat was probably built during the Ly (11th–13th century) or Tran dynasties (13th–14th century). Comparative studies with Chinese and global maritime records suggest that the boat dates from the 11th to 14th centuries and probably no later than the 15th century. Some experts believe that the design also shows influences from southern regions.

Unlike normal dugout boats, the double-hulled boats in Bac Ninh have a unique floating structure with a bottom. The two dugout boats are connected parallel to each other and joined by a mortise and tenon joint. The two hulls, each over 16 metres long and between 1.95 and 2.2 metres wide, were joined at the bow by a wooden plate. The deepest part of the hulls measures about 2.15 metres. At the top and in the middle of the hull are holes for inserting poles that can support a light roof or a small architectural space.

It is noteworthy that the two ends are symmetrical and that the bow and stern are indistinguishable, confirming the hypothesis that this is a floating platform rather than a movable boat.
