Spark
The inspirational word in SPARK, I started with inspiration from Alex Pardee's piece "Night of the Treeple".
Then I started to do the digital "inking" with for outline and darker part of the images.
Almost finished with the "inking" of the tree-man holding the tree in the pot, then I had to add the shading.
Looks kind of creepy and incomplete so I added more and put the outline in front of the shading.
Looks a little better but should probably work on the shading a bit more.
Smoothed it out and added the green to make the little tree pop more.
Put the outline and black back on and added a some background to it, now just to add the text in and a logo.
And its finished!
TWISTED
Hey there,
So this weeks word of inspiration is "twisted" and I was really excited to get started on this. So there is this fantastic video game that I've been obsessed with since I bought it called Alice in Wonderland: The Madness Returns. Which is kind of a darker take on Alice in Wonderland and you go through "wonderland" which has become a dark and twisted place from the hatter to the cheshire cat. If your into creepier games definitely check this one out. Anyways getting carried away, told you obsessed. So I wanted to do Alice in her hysteria mode which is extra creepy and twisted. So i started with a reference photo.
And did some digital pencil marks over it to get the positioning right of her face and shoulders. Next i worked on the structure of the drawing a little more.
Then did some digital "inking"
I played around with the various brushes Corel painter X3 had to add a variety of textures and line weights.
Now for colour! I was excited to see how the markers worked in Corel Painter and was pleasantly surprised, and loved the no clean up too :).
I wasn't to happy with the yellow or how flat her face looked so I went back in and fixed that up.
And voila thats what I ended up with, I'm pretty pleased with it but i think I will continue more with the blood soaked hands and weapon at a later date to give it a more complete look.
Exotic
The inspiration was exotic, on a recent trip to a aquarium I saw these captivating fish floating around in the tank called Leafy Sea Dragon they reminded me of something out of a fantasy anime or video game. So I started with some rough thumbnails.
After that I used some water colour paper because I liked the weight and texture for ink wash, and started to sketch out the design (unfortunately I got a little too excited about using the ink that i forgot to take a picture of this step >.<)
Next I gathered all the supplies and got to inking.
I chose to used my speed ball pen and a few different nibs and my watercolour brush for the wash.
After that I had to go in and fix up some of the spots I wasn't happy with and erase pencil lines.
It was starting to take shape now just to add the text and some tones in the background.
Then I finished up with the different tones and erased the final pencil marks and we have the finish design.
Jelly!

Working with ink wash and brushes it works well with the ink and pen technique from last week, which I enjoyed so much I went and bought my own speedball pen and a variety of nibs. This is unfinished but hopefully I will have it finished and uploaded soon.I think this is my new favourite medium to work in :-)

Fraktur mon Amour
Broken scripts and old lettering, mostly boring. But here comes the book of berlin based Designer Judith Schalansky called “Fraktur mon Amour”. She shows us a way how blackletters can be fashionable and stylish today.
About the Book
Fraktur mon Amour implies over 300 variation of blackletter fonts, ranging from historical to contemporary reinventions. Printed in a sensual, hot-pink prayer style the book has become a fetish object for international designers and typographers. Each blackletter has a dedication of two pages. On the left hand there is a design pattern or artwork made of the fontface shown on the right. A small sentence underneath the alphabet gives you a feeling how beautiful the letters float in line. The name of the font and foundry is written above the right side and you can also find them on the attached CD. Paul Shaw from the Eye Magazine wrote about it:”The fonts in Fraktur Mon Amour are a mix of the excellent, the important and the trivial. But this is surely one part of its popularity. Schalansky has brought blackletter to the people. The book is a bold and welcome addition to the sparse literature on blackletter”.
Now it’s your turn to find out what the book can. We highly recommend it to our fans, typographers and of course designers all around the world. A real must have in your bookcase.

Today we did some pencil technique exercises which was pretty interesting and I found some techniques that I find work alot better than the ones I use right now. Good learning experience!
Another thumbnail for the word TIME. (this is actually the thumbnail i decided to render in photoshop. Which is almost done and hopefully will be up soon)
