the fact that i'm no longer the same age as the protagonists of novels and films i once connected to is so heartbreaking. there was a time when I looked forward to turning their age. i did. and i also outgrew them. i continue to age, but they don't; never will. the immortality of fiction is beautiful, but cruel.

My body is enveloped in panic as the day unfolds. All the hope of it crushed beneath my rib cage. My lungs straining to contain everything I am incapable of saying aloud. Why does it never restart? Each day a continuation of the one before it. They never let me stop. They never give me the time I need to learn how to breathe.
