Maria Madalena Santos Reinbolt (1919 – 1976) was a self-taught Brazilian painter, embroiderer, and artist. Working with painting and tapestries that she called "paintings with ink" and "paintings with wool ," she depicted rural scenes reminiscent of her childhood in the interior of Bahia.

Madalena was born in Bahia , Brazil, her parents were farmers who planted cotton, corn, rice, and beans. They also raised cattle, pigs, chickens, and horses. Her mother, Ana Maria de Souza Pereira, was also an artisan and cook; she spun cotton, created clay dishes and pots, made lace, and prepared butter.

Madalena was never formally educated, and never learned to read or write beyond signing her own name.

In her early twenties, Madalena moved to Salvador to work as a domestic servant. In 1945, she moved to Rio de Janeiro , where she spent two years working as a domestic servant before moving to São Paulo in 1947. She moved back to Rio de Janeiro shortly afterwards, then moved to Petrópolis in 1949, where she would work as a cook for Lota de Macedo Soares and Elizabeth Bishop.

i think my main issue with the way people have been acting like putting their pronouns in their bio is “activism” (other than the fact that it is not..) is that it forces ppl in the closet to either 1) out themselves or 2) misgender themselves. like maybe i don’t want to open myself up to potential transphobia and maybe i’d rather not have my generally bigoted parents to see that i’m not cis or maybe i just don’t feel comfortable telling others….. so then in order to protect myself i have to misgender myself? like i get that it’s meant to help people refer to others with the correct pronouns but i feel like it has evolved into something very performative for cis people and has left us in a very uncomfortable dilemma.
