BRAIN-CONTROLLED BIONIC LEGS ARE FINALLY HERE
“Now, at age 48, Olafsson can move his right ankle by thinking about it. When the electrical impulse from his brain reaches the base of his leg, a pair of sensors embedded in his muscle tissue connect the neural dots, and wirelessly transmit that signal to the Proprio Foot. Since the command reaches the foot before the wearer’s residual muscles actually contract, there’s no unnatural lag between intention and action. That makes Olafsson part of a highly exclusive club. Along with David Ingvasson, a fellow Ossur tester, he’s one of the only people on the planet who owns a brain-controlled bionic limb. Ossur unveiled its implanted myoelectric sensor (IMES) technology today at an event in Copenhagen, and is now preparing large-scale clinical trials, in the hopes of reaching the market in three to five years.”

While Atlanta-based visual artist, Caitlin Bates received her BFA in Photography from SCAD, she believes that “sometimes limiting one’s artwork to a specific medium constricts an artist from growing while deconstructing the flow of ideas and thought processes.”
Her project titled, Growth, Destruction, Rebirth I, reveals an idealized, clean, fibrous anatomy infused with nature.

Binge eating
A 17-year-old girl with a history of bulimia and binge eating presented to the emergency room with severe abdominal pain six hours after ingesting massive amounts of food and drink. She had been unable to induce vomiting at home.
Physical examination revealed a markedly distended abdomen that was firm and tender to palpation, with absent bowel sounds. CT-scan of the abdomen showed massive gastric distention, with fluid and food causing a considerable compression on adjacent organs.
Gastric lavage yielded 11 liters of partially digested particulate material, with resulting decompression of the stomach and alleviation of symptoms. She was subsequently transferred to the psychiatry inpatient service.
