The long answer is that Bisexual used to mean exactly what we use Pansexual for now, but the language we use for various genders and our understanding of attraction and non-binary identities has expanded beyond what the “bi” implies, and so for a lot of people the choice in label is highly dependant on individual experience, subjective reality, and personal opinion, on top of which the waters are muddied by bad-faith takes, attempts at progressive development, and pointless infighting spurred on by transphobic rhetoric that ultimately contributes nothing of value to the community.

The shorter answer is “whatever the bi or pan person speaking to you says it is for them”, and the shortest answer is “the flags are different”
