About Us

This is meant to be an as-complete-as-possible archive of Mechanisms and Dr. Carmilla lore, sources, and content. We hope to preserve as much material as possible and prevent further loss of information to the depths of the Internet. As a secondary purpose, we also hope to create an easy reference to as much canon as possible.

We have expanded to accepting videos of Jessica Law's current shows! If you have recordings of Jess live we would love them!

This project has been compiled by tumblr users @miralines and @louchie / @gunpowderdtim. Both of us are fans of the Mechs with no association to the band, who began this project in November 2022 when Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter led to concerns about the site’s future. We worked to screenshot and preserve the lore posted on the official twitter as well as what individual band members have posted. It expanded from there, and is still in progress as we preserve existing sources and occasionally discover new ones.

Brief Q/A - before you ask, check here!!

Q: Where can I get band merchandise?

A: Currently, there is no official band merchandise available. There have been plans to possibly drop more CDs. This was stated on Twitter.

Q: Can I have photos of a certain mechanism?

A: Yes, but all photos are available in the link above in the Photos folder!

Q: Wait, Doctor Carmilla is making a new band??

A: Yes! Dr. Carmilla & The Void Quartet exist. They are currently working on their music. In the meanwhile, check out Maki's bandcamp for more Dr. Carmilla content!

Q: is there a live recording of [name] HNOC song?

A: Unfortunately not. The video on YouTube is what we have. The camera died mid show :(

Q: Did you ever find that BBC radio show interview?

A: No. The BBC radio archives are not public and accessing the radio archives is pretty much impossible for hobbyists like ourselves. As stated above, if you or anyone who you know is willing to use their academic or professional access to the archives to help us, I will owe you forever. And maybe paypal you 50 dollars I'm getting closer to putting a bounty on this thing every day.

Additionally, the british library does not have a copy. That's a dead end.

Hello Kofi. My HNOC brainrot is lasting longer than i thought it would be, but I am yet to understand HOW THE HELL DOES FORT GALFRIDIAN WORK. I've spent hours collecting information and I think I generally get how it's shaped and the artificial gravity thing. What I have not absolutely understood is 1. Where do the people live? Are they on the curved part of the cylinder (so they see the sun as a line in the sky) or in the base (which mean that they see just the end of the tube ig)? And 2. How do they travel through the different levels? I'm sorry to have robbed you of your time with my random rambling, thank you for all your work which makes me so happy everyday. Byeeee<3

So the movie Interstellar came out a few months *after* HNOC, but both Fort Galfridian and Cooper Station are variations on the O’Neill cylinder concept (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/O%27Neill_cylinder) so it’s not an original concept to either.

Interstellar is probably the clearest and easiest to find visual example of the main habitable level I can think of. I think this is concept art from the movie:

So as you can see, the people live inside the inner layer of the cylinder (think the inside of a cardboard tube.) The ground is also the ceiling and it’s all a bit giddy. The whole station spins to generate an artificial gravity effect. The big difference between this picture and Galfridian is that this station has the light source at the extreme end of the cylinder (and presumably at the opposite end too), which would not light the whole station evenly, whereas (according to all of us except Jonny, who obviously has a right to his opinion) Galfridian’s light source is a huge strip that runs from end to end of the cylinder, supported by colossal pylons, providing uniform light and oppressive heat (tube sun).

There are, of course, many lower layers under the ground where a combination of automation and operations crew carry out the essential functions, life support, hydroponics, weapons systems etc. How do they get down there from the habitable layer? The same way you’d get into a basement. Service elevators, stairwells, tunnels.

As Galfridian is broken, and there’s no longer a crew as such, these systems are decaying and wearing down. Some stopped altogether without the GRAIL. As the station’s solar orbit decayed over the years, the very outer levels became so flooded with solar radiation that even the Saxons won’t go that far out.

I’m so glad bifrost was made- it’s my favorite by far!- but are there any details about dracula you’d be willing to share?

I’m not gonna go deep into it because at least as I remember it, it wasn’t a great time. Looking back, I think we were super burned out from 3 consecutive years of a new album, rehearsals all weekend every week (some of us had to travel to Oxford to rehearse HNoC and basically hadn’t had a day at home in months), then a month of 1-2 shows a day at the Fringe, plus Kickstarter fulfilment at the same time. I didn’t realise at the time, but looking back, that was wild.

We knew exactly what we wanted for the first 3 albums and with that done, we were kind of without a clear roadmap for a bit? Trying to figure out what kind of band we were and what we made, where we all fit etc. That, plus exhaustion, isn’t a fun place to be, creatively.

Dracula - very broadly - would have been experimental jazz, a mystery set on a derelict ship with a killer on the loose. But we really couldn’t reach a consensus on what it was, musically or narratively, and, yeah, long story short, we needed to move on. It was sad, but by giving up on it we were able to pull through and find the spark again.

So the spiders are a hard topic because they are mentioned So Very Few Times

The primary reference for Aurora's Spiders comes from Ghost In The Machine

This post here can be seen to have aurora pretty clearly shooting a spiderweb.

this text should be of the most important note for this question:

Sun-sail (biomechanical semi-sentient spiders maintain this web of metallic fibres 100s km square). Can collapse, be angled etc"

But the jist is - the spiders maintain Aurora's space sail, which is her main form of propulsion through the stars. They are likely small biomechanical robots. They are semi-sentient by the note.

Additionally, the page for Aurora on the crew site reads "Cyberian Pallada-class Protected Cruiser (extensively modifed) / Arachnid “Voyager” Webship."

Emphasis here on Arachnid “Voyager” Webship

the spiders are related to her ship classification, specifically on reference to her solar sail.

I am fairly sure my good friend @orangezinnia has a write up somewhere on what a solar sail is and how it works!

you've actually got just about all the lore we know on aurora's sun-sail here! i think i personally headcanoned it was also used as a shield/protection against space debris, but no write up beyond that :P HOWEVER

there's this bit, from the facebook post announcing Nastya's.... nastya's...... (gets choked up and can't continue) oh just look at it

the "web" here is very likely just the "narrative web / story weave" nastya is escaping, but... it could also double as her literally exiting the aurora's sun-sail :(
