Ceramics: Bone China

While porcelain ceramics are those ceramics baked at high temperature, with low porosity and glassy qualities, bone china is a specific variety of porcelain produced with bone ash. One definition of bone china states that it is a ceramic with a translucent body containing a minimum of 30% phosphate derived from animal bone and calcined calcium phosphate. 

The addition of the bone ash allows the ceramics to be manufactured in very thin pieces - if you can shine a light through your ceramic plate, it’s probably bone china. Typically speaking, bone chinas can have similar strengths as other varieties of porcelain, though they are usually slightly harder. Other components of bone china include fledspar, quartz, kaolin, and clay.

Bone china has been around since the mid 1700s and used animal bones procured from cattle markets and slaughterhouses - cow bones, specifically. Bone ash is produced by grinding up these bones and calcining them at high temperatures. Until about the mid 1900s, almost all bone china produced was made in the United Kingdom. Currently, China is one of, if not the largest, producer of bone china.

This ceramic’s most common application is dishware.
