With the new year I've resolved to start investing more into my art (both in doing more of it and also by opening up public commissions for the first time in years soon!) Design sketches/concepts for a personal project. These started as random draft designs but I've grown attached while working on them.

Not an odd question at all! These patterns sort of developed naturally as an extension of my lineart process, i like to "carve" the final image out of the sketch (or more often these days, less polished lines) because the process of going from a good sketch to starting over an re-lining it wasn't all that enjoyable for me. So instead i would rough things out and work from there. Overtime, this evolved into what I like to call my "figure things out later" squiggles, where I liquify the lines and carve them into patterns that fit the surrounding flow or form.

Im awful about remembering to record timelapses, so here's an example of this with Helminth's wings you can see in some old progress screencaps i sent a friend.

As for the squiggles themselves. I truly don't know why I draw them like that, its just kind of the default shape that feels right to me, and if you take a closer look you can see it tends to be the same shape repeated over and over again, just entangled in weird ways.

I think I have simply always had the compulsion to make lines spiral in my work.

More recently I've been experimenting with doing this on my color layer as a part of rendering, rather than as part of my lines, which is on one hand far less taxing on my wrists (hence why I was doing a lot of this for art fight), but also isn't quite where I'd like it to be visually.
