I survived both the presentation and being a chairman of the session.Â
What a lovely conference! So inspiring
I know this is not an artifact but I hope you don’t mind if I’ll share it here :)Â

If your students can get through 2 hours of class discussion without even doing the readings, why did you assign them? Either structure your discussion better, so that students are engaging with the text, or cut the reading load.
If you assign readings, leave time to talk about them. Leave time to work through what they authors are saying before asking your students to formulate their critiques. Leave time for students to ask for clarification about what authors are saying, because this may be the only time they get to work through this with someone who knows a lot about the field.
Don’t have a week in the syllabus devoted to race. Don’t have a week in the syllabus devoted to gender. Don’t have a week in the syllabus where the first day is race and the second day is sexuality and gender. All of these things inform everything you’re talking about, and segregating them into one special week denies your students the opportunity to bring those kinds of analysis into everything you read.
Your students will not always thank you for making your classroom the “fun, laid-back” class by reducing the quality and rigor of your class discussions. Especially if your class is required for their majors, they will probably need to build on what they’ve learned in your class from years to come. So for god’s sake, at least give them the tools to lay a fucking foundation.
hey guys this is my final project for my sociology 100 class.  it’s supposed to be a video on any topic we have discussed in class, so i fused together what i learned from race and social control to make this video on police brutality.  it’s pretty basic, but here i analyze how the concept of police discretion factors into the trends we see between white police officers and black citizens.  let me know what you think and i hope you enjoy!!
Well done, Lauren!

This is too real.
Hey all! My name is Omi, she/her/hers, and I am a senior sociology student at Illinois State University. I am currently recruiting for my and my research partner’s study on genderqueer identities. Our main research question is summarized as such: how do genderqueer individuals form an identity in a world that accommodates only man and woman? Although we are based in Central Illinois, we are able to conduct Skype interviews, and have reduced the number of interviews to simply the one-hour one. Think of the interviews as more of a conversation than one that asks yes/no questions. We want to emphasize your experiences and your voice to come through! If you are interested, or know someone who is interested, or have any questions, please shoot me a message on tumblr or by the email(s) provided on the flyer. The only requirements to participate is being over the age of 18 and identify as genderqueer. If you can’t personally participate, reblogging this post would be so helpful for us! Through our work, we hope to further social education on genderqueer identities, and promote activism through an academic lens. I hope you are as excited about this project as we are!

Y'all go off!
Bless this.
As an educator, I hate the bell curve system, but I really hate teachers who say, “You won’t get an A in my class.” It’s not just because it causes students to begin the semester with a feeling that they will fail the course: it’s because it is the teacher admitting to their own failure to teach.Â
We are literally paid to teach a full curriculum. “I don’t give out A’s” to me translates to “I cannot 100% do my job.” There is no reason a good teacher can’t give you an 80-100% understanding of what is in the course. It’s our job to make sure you understand as much as we can.Â
A class average of 50 is isn’t a statement of how hard the material is. It’s a statement that the teacher cannot complete 50% of their job.
