But Erik still abandoned his “new” family and his “brother”, gravely wounded, at the enemy’s mercy. Which is much, much worse than whatever Charles said to him under pressure and sheer desperation. After all that speech of mutants uniting as brothers and sisters and protecting each other and blah blah blah, his first action is exactly the opposite of his words? Sounds incredibly hypocritical to me.

Generally I sympathize with Erik and what he did, but he took the helmet to prevent Charles from taking control of him so that he can defend mutants "freely"? Erik seems to strongly believe in Charles' friendship in XMFC. He could kill Shaw only because he knew that Charles would never let go of Shaw's mind whatever happens. He's got this helmet, but what if Charles, with his DANGEROUS ideas, suddenly decides not to help Erik who is going to kill Shaw-which Charles makes clear to Erik that he disagrees-anymore? If Charles was like the person described above, he would have done that and let Shaw go without doubt. Then with helmet or not, Erik wouldn't have been able to play his little coin game. But Charles didn't, and Erik seems to know that very well, whereas I don't recall any part of the movie indicating that Erik is so worried of dangerous Charles who might take control of him at any time. Also the movie makes sure that Charles respects Erik. He even asks Erik's permission to go into his mind and see a piece of his memory. Does it look like the way anyone would act to somebody of whom he is going to take control? I don't think so. As much as I do not like Erik being compared to nazi, I'm tired of Charles being a oh-so-dangerous-and-arrogant-obstacle-sabotaging-Erik's-grand-vision-for-mutants (don't forget that Erik isn't the only one who defends mutant; Charles does too, in his own ways) only to give big good-looking excuses for some of Erik's obvious actions. Let's be really honest. Erik took the helmet so that he could complete his revenge and his dream of a mutant world. I'm not saying that's wrong, it's something that has to be done. It's just, to me in that scene Erik didn't really seem like a guy who is threatened by a very very dangerous telepath friend who is assumed to take away Erik's free will and control with dangerous ideas at any moment but funnily enough is shown only the contrary in XMFC.
