here’s a fun little game for productivity!

make a list of 12 activities and number them 1-12. The majority should consist of things you must do for productivity such as studying a certain topic or cleaning, but throw in a couple fun ones as well that don’t have to get done!

roll dice (if you don’t have any, use a generator online!)

1. Cut up an apple and sprinkle some cinnamon over it (this tastes so good), or grab a healthy snack from the kitchen

2. Get out everything you need, laptop, charger, paper, pens, bullet journal, iPad, notes etc.

3. Write a priority list, number them so you keep track and finish/start what needs to be done first.

4. Have some background music or put on a TV series that you’ve watched all the episodes of so you don’t have to pay close attention. Friends, Doctor Who and The Simpsons are some of my favourites

5. If you have a long day/pulling a (nearly (?)) all nighter, get out a movie series, this, to me makes time fly while I still get the same amount done. I recommend Harry Potter if you have a weekend of study ahead. Watching your favourite movies will keep you from leaving your desk (for the wrong reasons) and getting distracted. (JUST TO BE SURE: choose a TV show/movie you’ve watched a dozen times so you don’t have to pay attention/ go back because you have no idea what’s going on)

6. Use different methods to remember dates, events and the the general stuff for up and coming tests. Flash cards, mind maps and note taking are three ways I memorise information for tests.

7. If you’re starting a research task (essay, oral) watch a documentary relevant to your topic and take notes on the important points. Watch lectures (tedxtalks), if worthy of your time. This is a great way to get your starter information and you can do your own research from there.

8. Every hour (at least), get up and do a couple of star jumps (jumping jacks) or anything to get your heart rate going, staying on your butt all day is not best for your health.

9. Bribe yourself. “if I do three hours on my Latin revision + homework, I’ll _________“ this helps with just getting through it.

note: my way of using the bullet journal is pretty minimal, in the sense that I really don’t have much else in my journal apart from the “essentials” (ie. my tasks/ideas, etc.) i personally cannot just whip out v cute drawings/doodles, and i find that trying to do so often leads me to spend more time on my bullet journal instead of actually doing the things i wrote down! so it’s pretty bare in that sense - but if you can be v cute and creative then kudos to you and your talents that i am envious of. also, i’m sorry it took so long for me to get this up guys! these past few days have not been kind to me, but i hope this can help you guys at least a little bit ^-^ 

INDEX

Although I never created a true “index” for myself when I first began (ie. writing it down at the front of my journal), I kind of just found a system that works for me along the way. But for the purpose of this post, I wrote it down for you guys on a post-it note to show what I use for entries etc.

MONTHLY OVERVIEW

Instead of drawing a monthly calendar for myself, I decided early on that I would rather print out a calendar online. Partially because I just like the look of some online printable better, and also because I would waste way too much time trying to sketch the calendar perfectly.

Having the paper calendar taped inside of my bullet journal is also a really nice, quick way for me to see how many pages I used each month!

Apart from this calendar, I also like to make a list of monthly goals I want to complete! (I forgot to take a picture of this sorry guys! but you can see a glimpse of what it looks like here) More details on how I structure my to-do list will be further down in the post~

WEEKLY TO-DO LISTS

After creating a monthly overview, I like to make a list of goals that I want to complete within that one week. I make sure that my goals correspond to the tasks I set out for myself for the month!

DAILY ENTRIES

Okay so for daily entries, I’ve had multiple multiple layouts over the past three month - all of which are documented here on my tumblr heh. But recently, I’ve found a system that I think works the best for me when I crave structure and I think it could work during the school year as well!

Here is an example of what a daily entry would look like. This is the one I made for today! As you may or may not be able to tell, this one in particular begins at 11:30AM because I went running this morning.

The first thing I do is title each page.

Then I create a daily to-do list of the tasks that I want to get done today. I actually section off my tasks by subject/topic, and I list subtasks underneath each one. It helps my mind stay clear as well haha.

After that, I write out a schedule using specific times for when I want to start each project. This works the best for me when I feel like I need more structure in my day.

For this week, I’ve actually been using a colorful gel pen to write the date, headings, and time stamps. However, I have used just my basic blue & black ballpoint pens for the same layout in the past, and it works just as fine. I just wanted to switch things up a bit and introduce a little more color again!

Here is an example of an entry with only the schedule and no to-do list. This was from when I first started wanting that structure, and I just kind of wrote down whatever tasks I knew I really wanted to get done that day!

I actually wrote a little reflection/journaled a bit beneath the schedule because I had some space left over and it’s nice writing down things you’re grateful for! ^-^

And depending on whether or not I leave enough space on the left margin, sometimes I’ll make a check mark next to the time to indicate whether or not I worked on that task. Then at the end of the day, I’ll go back to the top of the page and fill in/cross-off/migrate the original list!

Purdue Owl

Everything you need for writing.  MLA and APA format, subject specific writing tips, and english as a second language writing tips.  I go to this website every time I have to write a research paper.

Intelligence Squared Debates

This website has the best sources for current events.  Just look up any topic and you will find superb articles and essays concerning it.  For both sides of the issue.  Also if you are a debate kid, the videos are great to watch.

 College Confidential

You may’ve heard about this one.  CC has a reputation for being a little stuck up, but I’ve never once not been helped there.  Not only does CC have information on college apps, but advice on what classes to attend, AP, SAT, and ACT exam resources, and high school application advice.  

Checkli

My favorite website for all things lists.  Checkli allows you to make as many checklists as you would like for free.  If you’re a left brainer like me and lists make you feel the way a fresh batch of cookies makes other people feel, you will fall in love with Checkli. 

Web 2.0 Scientific Calculator

For all of your calculator needs.  This is a free online scientific calculator that is convenient and easy to use.  The website it’s on also has clear, concise explanations of how to use a scientific calculator for algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and finance.

Free ebooks - Project Gutenberg

This is exactly what it sounds like.  A free online library.  Not only is this great for keeping up with class reading, GP is my No.1 go-to site for research papers.  Just search whatever subject/ topic you need (no matter how specific) and use whatever books you’d like to.  I have never been disappointed.

Pro-tip: Citing books instead of online articles will make it seem as though you went beyond just googling the subject, and took the time to do comprehensive research.  Also, it is unlikely that your classmates will have cited the same sources as you.  Your teacher(s) will be impressed, I promise.

For Dummies How-To Help and Videos

If you’ve ever read a ‘For Dummies’ book, you know how helpful they are.  If you don’t want to pay for one, you can find a lot of their explanations online, for free.  Everything from gardening to calculus, made easier.

Google Drive

This is another one you’ve probably heard of, but just in case you haven’t, this one is a life saver for group projects, and my teachers love it for editing.  Google Drive wins all the awards, and is free.  In fact, I used it for a year in lieu of the overpriced Pages, Word, Keynote, Microsoft Powerpoint, and excel.  

Howcast | The best how-to videos on the web

This is more for life things than it is for school things.  Howcast has great life-hack type videos for almost anything you can think of.

Quizlet

Vocabulary cards for everything ever.  Quizlet has a set of vocabulary cards for every subject you will encounter in high school (most of them, anyway.)  Quizlet also allows you to develop your own set of vocabulary cards, specific to your needs.

So I thought that I would make a post on how to boost your grade in languages at school, or just get more fluent in general!

1. IMMERSE YOURSELF EVERYDAY - Repetition is the key to feeling more fluent in a language as the more you practice, the easier and more natural it will feel to speak it.

2. TALK TO NATIVE SPEAKERS - Even better if they also are trying to learn your language so you can help each other. You speak to them in your language, then they reply in theirs. It is a very good way to learn how they form sentences and what sounds right in that language - you could even ask them to explain a few things that confuse you too!

3. START A JOURNAL - Write a journal completely in the language you are studying! You could include doodles with captions, song lyrics, lists of useful vocab, or just diary entries about how your day has been - anything!

4. LISTEN TO MUSIC - Native music is a very fun way to learn! make a playlist for all the music in that language on youtube and play it atleast a few times a week and make sure to translate the parts you don’t understand! 

I only study French so can only recommend some french artists: Stromae, Coeur de Pirate, Louane, Joyce Jonathon and Indila! Also, Selena Gomez sings some songs in spanish, and most Disney songs have versions in other languages e.g. French which is good as you already recognise the tune! My favourite is “Il en Faut Peu Pour Etre Heureux” (The Bear Necessities in french!)

5. WATCH CARTOONS - Youtube has an array of cartoons for kids in foreign languages, have a browse and see what you can find! Easy for learning vocab as you can pause and translate! A great way to practice your listening skill too as learning written language and learning spoken language are two completely different matters, one may be harder for you than the other!

6. START A VOCAB BOOK - Grab a cheap A5 notebook and write down every piece of new vocab / phrase that you see! Be sure that its correct first though. Every few weeks make yourself read through the whole book so that you remind yourself of the words!

7. READ - Read books in the language! I’m currently reading the French version of a John Green book (La Face Cachee De Margo) and i love it! Many popular books have versions translated into a number of languages so you can find something you know that you will like! If you are finding it hard to translate, start a word document and type up everything that you translate so that you can remember next time you pick up the book! It doesn’t matter if it takes you months and months to finish the book, its just something you can do every so often! You could also read the news on a website from their country!

8. PRETEND THAT YOU ARE A NATIVE - As you go around your normal daily routine, try to think in the language. Making a cup of tea? In your head (or even out loud) say ‘Now I’m going to boil the kettle’, ‘I like my tea with 2 sugars and a splash of milk’. If you cant say a word, translate it, or write it down to do later! Be sure to write the translated words into your vocab book too and try to see if you remember how to say it the next time that you make your cup of tea! For everything that you see, try to repeat the word in that language in your head.

9. USEFUL APPS: + I 10000% recommend Duolingo! They have an app too which is amazing and actually fun! + Reverso Dictionary (website here) is a great app if you’re not sure if Google translate is quite accurate (which it isn’t a fair deal of the time). It translates the word that you enter in context so that you can see it in a sentence, and is pretty much always correct as it finds it from online sources! You can also see lots of examples so that you’re sure its correct. + Just do an app store search for something in that language, for example search ‘mots mêlés’ and you will find french word search apps!

10. STAY MOTIVATED AND HAVE FUN! - Learning a language happens a lot easier if you find it fun and not just a chore that you need to do for school. Find a friends and learn it together, chat in the language and just joke around! If you dont like learning languages, then I can guarantee that you will find it 10X harder to learn.
