I’m not going to stop feeling strongly about it in the same way I still feel strongly seeing centuries of my people’s history buried under Catholic churches. I understand the dome is there now, and I don’t think it should be destroyed because I understand the significance it holds now.

But I’m not going to stop being angry about it. Especially since my people are not even allowed to go there. I can’t imagine the rage we Mexicans would justifiably have if Spaniards suddenly decided we aren’t allowed to visit our own ancient cities and temples becuase the land is “their’s now” since they built their churches there. The patience and understanding of the Jewish people is so fucking undermined. We have time and time again been expected to and have bent over backwards for others becuase we fundamentally believe in uplifting everyone, even at the cost of ourselves. Even in our own fucking country. Even in the country everyone accuses of being “Jewish supremacist” do we still face blatant discrimination, and allow ourselves to face it for the sake of our muslim neighbors and muslim Israeli citizens.

Explanation: Does this scene look familiar? It is a modern recreation of the famous painting Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh. Both the image and the painting depict a tall tree on the left, a crescent moon on the upper right, the planet Venus just to the right of the tree, a foreground horizon rising from left to right, and clouds above the horizon. Differences include that the photograph was taken in mid-April earlier this year in Cascavel, Brazil, while the painting was composed in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, in 1889. The original Starry Night is considered by many to be one of the three most famous paintings in the world today and a statement about the wonders of the night sky. Today is (roughly) the anniversary of the morning that van Gogh saw the sky that he later painted in his version of Starry Night.

Silky sheets covered Pacifica Northwest’s face, still smelling like fresh detergent and lavender. She would have it no other way. The pillows were fluffed, the carpet warm, and her nightgown fitted precisely for her needs. Drifting in and out of sleep felt like floating through the sky on a blanketed cloud. When her eyes closed and the lights shut off, the outside world no longer mattered. 

She saw herself in a green valley with the sun pouring down from above. Behind her was nothing but grass stretching to the horizon, not a mansion in sight. Grass blades bent around her fingertips while she knelt down and braided them. Butterflies fluttered in and out of the field at random. A particularly friendly monarch flew over her head and brushed against her golden blonde hair. 

Without any servants to tell her otherwise, Pacifica fell backwards and spread her arms out, staring into the sky as the warm grass seemed to swallow her whole. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. The air was minty, as if a shower had passed by and dampened the grass before the sun took over.

A harsh knock at her door jolted Pacifica out of the dream and into the dull light of the morning. She sat up and pulled the sheets up over her shoulders in a futile attempt to conserve the fleeting warmth. 

Father stepped through her bedroom door. His navy suit clashed horribly with the soft lavender tint of her walls. A servant stood behind him, combing his hair while holding a cup of coffee and an old newspaper. Father had a particularly snarly smile that seemed particularly defined that morning. Finely whitened teeth formed a grin that brought artificial smile lines down the sides of his face. His mustache glimmered with the glossiness of fresh wax. 

“Good morning, Pacifica,” Father said stiffly, “You are running late.”

Pacifica wiped the sleep from her eyes, “My itinerary said I wasn’t needed until nine.”

“That has changed. I have a meeting with a man today that I would like you to meet. Perhaps his investment will benefit both of us.”

“Berkshire Hathaway?”

“No, this is a starting investment. You will learn in due time. I want you downstairs for breakfast in fifteen minutes. We will be shifting your itinerary up two hours to clear up time for our dinner.”

Without another word, Father straightened his suit and closed the door.
