Thanks for the tag @darkcimba <3 Don't think I've done much of these before let's see-
Tagging: @crynwr-drwg , @stormbeyondreality , @naryusgirlfriend and @hircines-hunter
Dunno if you all have been tagged before so no pressure to do it :D
Age: ??? (I can't figure out how elf aging works for the life of me? But he's like, still sorta on the young side for a Dunmer)
Born: 7th of Frostfall (ESO character so the birthyear is somewhere before the events of Planemeld)
Background:
Born and raised in Stonefalls, Vares was never a particularly sociable sort. He struggled making friends, partially due to holding himself up to high standards as a child of one of the Great Houses. Always had his nose up at people he deemed unworthy of his attention - which, due to having grown up around a time when slavery was still very much alive, meant pretty much anything other than his fellow Dunmer.
He grew up to have an interest in healing magic as a result of watching a relative of his work as a healer and as such, ended up as his apprentice. As time passed, he found himself enthralled by the art of healing to the point he started pondering what applications necromancy could have in the field. And yet, despite his practice for healing forcing him to interact with all sorts, he failed to learn proper empathy.
Then, an old uncle of his grew ill. One who just so happened to have a large estate perfect for hiding more taboo experimentation within its chambers. Vares saw his opportunity to gain a proper laboratory and volunteered to care for his uncle in his last months, feigning kindness to hide his more selfish goals.
Much to his dismay, the uncle saw right through him and promised him nothing in exchange for his care, merely telling him:
”Sweet little scrib… if you fail to believe there's genuine kindness in the world, then cruelty and maltreatment is all you'll ever find.”
What happened after? Well. I just so happen to have fics about his long, hard, painful journey of becoming a better person. <3
Starting here (mind the tags, shit gets dark)
Veeskh-Ei (by @kirkkorymyli ) - His torturer. His worst nightmare. His sleep paralysis demon.
Hrafn (by @kirkkorymyli ) - His rescuer. Kind of a dad figure of sorts in a way, someone who believed in him and his ability to change and heal and be better.
Boon - A raven that follows Vares around. He likes to think it's a blessing from Nocturnal.
Sirania (a former guildmate's ESO character) - A friend he traveled with for a time and went through hardships and adventure with. He all but fell for her. Onesided, though. Turned out Sirania's assumed dead boyfriend was not dead and Vares was left yearning, too ashamed to really ever approach Sirania (who was a soldier for the Aldmeri Dominion, no less, a very much good shining lawful person) after she learned he is a necromancer.
Lifts-Your-Spirits (my Argonian OC) - A bard he met while sulking about Sirania in Shimmerene. He comforted him and gave him some words of advice. Oddly, Vares keeps bumping into him now.
Silariil (by @kirkkorymyli ) - A fellow nerd from the Summerset Isles. They met in a library and nerded out together. Vares' first gay experience.
Luomariin (my Altmer OC) - A weird oddball who seems to feel bad for Vares' awkwardness and jumpiness and keeps hiring him as a healer. Though those jobs are a bit... peculiar, to say the least.
Nevyth Uvathi (by @kirkkorymyli ) - Someone Vares met on a job for Luoma. They've got a sort of teasing relationship. Nev teaches Vares to loosen up and be more open as well as pushing him to communicate better. Vares finds comfort in knowing not all Dunmer shun him for his practices. ...also Nev is a good employer.
Strengths: Book-smart and an excellent healer and mage. He has a great head for problem solving when given the space to think.
Weaknesses: Proud to a fault. It makes him stubborn and snappy if you try to oppose him or correct him about things, but he is slowly learning to be better at taking criticism. Massively insecure about his looks and social skills (namely when he likes someone, if he doesn't like you he'll just be blunt and kinda mean). The deal he has with Hermaeus Mora also limits him a lot in terms of life choices (as well as his criminal status around a lot of Morrowind).
No Interest In: Playing a hero. He'll help people for sure but he'd rather avoid the spotlight.
No Concept Of: Knowing when to shut up. If you get him to open enough to get talkative, he'll keep rambling about his studies or experiences or his list of nuisances with barely any filter and will not realize he's making people uncomfortable unless directly told.
In Battle: Uses a staff. Prefers to stay in the back lines and offer support from safe distance, avoiding getting hurt. He avoids utilizing his necromancy in battle unless absolutely necessary, instead opting for frost magic and his Mora-gifted grimoire.
Distinguishing Marks: Huge, nasty scar on his right lower arm towards the wrist. You can vaguely tell it's a bite site. That arm doesn't quite have a full range of motion of a healthy arm. Also a nasty scar on his lower stomach.
Trivia:
-There's that mount you got from pre-ordering Necrom, the weird Hermaeus Mora inspired one? That's canonically Vares' mount. I like to hc that it was a little something Mora presented him as "a sign of good faith" when he demanded Vares help him with the plot of the Necrom chapter.
-Among one of Vares' first experiments with necromancy that succeeded was him building a makeshift skeletal dragon out of bones of several different animals. He's still hugely proud of it. This is based on one of the skeletal dragon pets in ESO.
-I was initially supposed to name him Varis Indoril bc Varis means crow in Finnish and I thought it would have been neat but alas, it was taken. :/
-I wanted to create a character that just sucks. That is a complete dickwad. That's what Vares initially just was, but I grew sorta fond of him along the lil rp campaign me and two guildmates had with him so he's now on a journey of redemption. And it's kinda nice seeing him grow.
-I've also played around with the thought of Vares living long enough to turn out to be the last dragonborn in Skyrim but it's more just a silly little thought experiment than anything else lol.
