love that it is confirmed the big storyline with Theo is coming and it is not cutesy and domestic. would be cool if it's more The Gifted/Instant family coded
Buck starts getting used to having a hyperactive toddler at home, develops a routine and rituals with Theo, and really lets himself think about this being the rest of his life. and realizing that raising Theo is the best gift life has ever given him. Buck just knows this love for the boy is here to stay, and he really wants their situation to be permanent.
Except he is a guardian, not a parent, in the eyes of law. And naturally, someone next of kin in Connor and/or Kameron's families volunteers to adopt Theo. Buck is informed of that, and it would be very okay for a relative to adopt Theo — except it's not two days after the car crash, but six months. And he was the one to make a home for Theo and be with him these past months, he was the one who helped him through one of the worst tragedies in a kid's life.
Buck decides to fight for Theo in court, especially when he notices how hesitant the boy looked when he told him about the relative about to look after him.
The lawsuit ensues, where all of his mistakes are brought up one by one: neverending fights at school, getting kicked out of colleges, endless accidents on the job, the lawsuit against the city of LA, his recent drug dependence. The judge decides that Buck is not fit to adopt Theo.
And just like that, there's no Theo living in his house anymore. And Buck is devastated, because it really seemed for a moment that it could be that easy. But it's not, and it never will be.
I imagine that eventually he would get Theo back – the relative being absolutely incompetent and therefore no fit for taking care of a child or something. But this fight is long and exhausting.
I need to point out several opportunities: Buck's ability to finally claim a role in someone's life and fight for it; time to tell us more about Theo and introduce him as a full character; Buck and Theo's story being different from Eddie and Chris' but very beautiful nonetheless.
Buddie potential here too. At first, Buck leaning on Eddie while navigating his new life, Eddie getting attached to Theo and this new Buck, and inevitably Eddie getting heartbroken when the court takes Theo away. Because he's there, right by Buck's side as he deals with the lawsuit and loses, and he supports him through it all even though he can feel himself falling apart too. Watching as the system fails yet another family. But he knows he would always be by Buck's side. That's what you do for the love of your life. And it is that easy, that year, to finally see what's been under your nose.

I need there to be a scene in season 10 where someone is questioning Buck having a kid (probably ravi) and Eddie going "No he's going to be a great dad."
"How could you know that?"
"Because he already is"
And Buck like isn't a part of the conversation but overhears it. Then cut to a scene of Chris and Theo meeting and the framing just reenforcing that Chris is Buck's first kid.
The thing that convinced me that the donor baby was a last-minute decision was that it's the donor baby! Giving a child to Buck from a random would have required setup, considering the last woman he was with on screen before the married couple was Taylor. So a ONS would have needed to be intro'd or else the GA would have called bullshit. The donor baby required very little work, and well, that's what they did.
Oooh that's a really good point.
I do think it might have been floated around the beginning of the season (what with Oliver mentioning it in an interview), but maybe not seriously considered. And then suddenly, for some reason (Tim watched the Pitt and saw Whitaker helping Amy take care of her son Theo after his father died) around episode 15 he made the decision (per Oliver's interview answer) that the baby would return and they were going to drop any former LI (thus Lou unfollowing Oliver probably because he got the call that they won't need him back).
I feel like the Charlie Day corkboard meme but tell me that all doesn't line up
I think that Tim, after the backlash of 8x06, considered that Bucktommy might have enough shipper support and decided to try something. At the same time he knew he would have to make budget cuts for the next season, so the idea was this:
Send Eddie to El Paso, fix his relationship with Christopher, and have him become a cop there (letting Ryan in the dark for awhile if he would be back ir not). That's why the scene of him and Chris driving into the sunset and the deleted scenes of Eddie becoming a cop or having that idea of it exists.
At the same time, he planned for Ravi to die in the lab episode and Tommy to return (bringing back both characters a little before it).
Then we have 8x11. The episode leaks, and he senses the reaction from the buddie shippers and gives up (Aisha revealing that the episode was to close the door on Buddie, but Tim avoiding to confirm it). Also around the same time, rumors circulate about what Eddie would be doing in El Paso.
Tim drops his plan. The writers then realized they would need more time to rewrite and film the lab episode, so they wrote and reshoot/filmed 8x13 (Invisible) at the same time as 8x14, taking some scenes already filmed with Eddie and the resolution with Chris. 8x14 ended up being divided into two parts, so they could work on Bobby's death as a main character and his goodbye (and save more on the budget).
So I think that for a moment Tim considered leaving Bobby alive and bringing Tommy back so that in season 8, he would end up reconciling with Buck after the lab episode, in which Ravi would die, as well as writing Eddie and Chris off of the show and staying in El Paso. BUT he changed his mind and all possibilities fell apart as soon as he decided that Bobby would die. As everything was done in a rush while they were still filming, some scenes made to set up a bucktommy reconciliation were kept (and because they were good scenes). But after 8x16, Tim only tried to correct the course by sending the characters back to their old positions, with minor alterations due to Bobby's death.
it's a plausible explanation!
and the fact that they actually shot scenes for the "Eddie becomes a cop" sl and then promptly dropped them, makes me even more convinced that Tim also had a plan A for s9b (settle Buck down with an LI, and keep "sprinkling" with Eddie and Alex) and then, when he got the renewal news (more time for buddie baiting no need to wrap-up everyone's stories yet), he pivoted and went with the plan B (drop Alex out of nowhere and give Buck a kid in the easiest and quickest way possible - a kid from a one night stand would have to be set up waaay in advance, whereas the sperm donor kid was already there).

Eddie suggests they get married to make the adoption easier/look good on paper?
the “I do” kiss, no one being surprised, living together, sharing a bed, ALL THE TROPES would lead to feelings realization. Plus it would just be fun, funny, cheesy and romantic. 🤡🤞

buck only considering himself a guardian to theo because that’s all he’ll ever be in his mind. kameron and connor were his real parents, he’s just the guy who gave them the chance to be ones. him confiding in eddie about this and how weird he feels about the situation because he loves theo like he’s his own, but he isn’t. and crossing that line in his mind feels like betraying connor and kameron. eddie reassuring him that he isn’t betraying connor and kameron, and that taking theo in is what they would have wanted for the boy given the circumstances (none of theo’s living relatives being willing to take him in). and then eddie takes a deep breath in, subtly bringing up how may and harry have three dads, and how buck never questioned that? buck nodding along, his heart stopping when eddie whispers how chris has two dads, too. buck taking that in and saying “i’ve always saw him like a son, but he’s yours, eddie.” eddie not having that and responding with “he’s yours in every way but name. so is theo. and i’ve known you’ve always seen him that way. but know that i’ve never, ever felt betrayed that you have, or that chris sees you like one, either.” that finally being the thing that breaks buck and allows him to look at theo as a son without guilt. theo had a mom and dad, and now he has another dad. and maybe, just maybe, a third one, too, if the way eddie’s been looking at him recently is any indicator of what the future looks like.

sometimes i do wonder what a 911 where maddie and eddie did end up getting together would look like
solely because ryan and oliver would still be weird about each other and that would still bleed into the characters
if they had tried to make it the same as buck with madney would it have worked given that—depending on the day—oliver and ryan either have the vibe of two people that have fucked nasty OR two people that want to fuck nasty
Listen, I hate most of the parents of our main characters (except Tony) but I do love seeing them on screen because it usually means good drama for our characters (I do wish they'd stop with the "You should forgive them" thing 911 got going on).
So... How do we think the Buckley parents are gonna react to Theo and can we maybe get another fight with Buck ?
