Charlie was the master of taking ordinary, everyday props and harnessing them… subverting them, even, for comedic effect. It’s one of the things I love most about comedy of this nature - it reveals the absurdity there is to be found in the institutions and establishments of any given society. Here we see his character inadvertently become a human hedgehog whilst clearing some chairs. The prop-man becomes prop. Appropriate, after having seen the way his superiors exploit him.
