Final Product for the Live TV Studio Production Module

This project meant working together as one due to the nature of what was required of us. After being given the brief and being put into groups, our group had a prompt meeting to discuss ideas and how we could get the most out of them whilst being entertaining to our (to be determined) demographic.  The brief of ‘Carlisle’s Best Kept Secrets’ gave us all ideas and we sat and discussed the possibilities together, on multiple occasions. Since Carlisle has a rich history and popular town and social life, this gave us a real opportunity to create a marketable and entertaining live TV show.  Initially we were concerned about the 5 minute runtime. We believed this would constrict the flow of the show if we tried to cover everything in that time. We realised that our show would have to be timed to the second and planned carefully to cover all the points we would wish to make. After many ideas, we came up with idea of highlighting Carlisle’s thriving and most hidden cafés and coffee bars. Our presenters could discuss, taste, review and promote these within the 5 minute duration.  We agreed this would also appeal to a wide audience and would be a good source of information to tourists and anyone new to the area. We discussed production roles that we’d like to undertake; I chose to be one of three camera operators as I haven’t had much experience behind a camera in a live studio environment. I also took responsibility for the title cards for the introduction as I wanted to try an editing role. We decided on the name for our show; “Brunch Bunch”.  Over the next couple of months, we met up between 1-2 times a week. Over this time, our producer had organised, 2 presenters, a guest, a set design plan and a script. Once all the planning was in place, we began rehearsals. After editing a 15 second title card, my next job was to operate the camera with instructions from our director. For me, this felt relatively straightforward. We had many rehearsals to ensure that there would be no mistakes and to make sure that we wouldn’t exceed or fall short of the runtime on the day. Due to nature of this project, our group was large in size so everything ran efficiently. Everyone had to be in-sync with one another, we were busy all time - this became an intense environment. Naturally, everyone was anxious and stressed as we all wanted the best for the final project. The morale of some people dropped which we anticipated as there are always obstacles to meet. It became clear to us all that we needed to remain focussed on our roles in the production as any loss of concentration would lead to the quality not reaching the standard we wanted to achieve. As this was live, we didn’t have the luxury of reshooting. Despite this, the intensity benefitted the final product as everything ran smoothly and to the second. Upon reflection, I found the intensity of the production process challenging but exhilarating and I look forward to having the opportunity of repeating the process as part of my learning experience.

PRESENTER 1  We’ll also be talking to Joanne  Cluley from John Watts about  working in an independent coffee  shop.

PRESENTER 1  But first How do you decide where  to buy your coffee? That’s the  question we’ve been asking the  people of Carlisle this week

We visited two of the most  popular independent cafe’s to see  why people should choose to spend  their time there rather than the  big brand high street chains

PRESENTER 1  Lets see how Betsy got on when she  visited the popular Cafe ’Foxes’.
