For the Television Production Module, we were put into groups and given the brief of “Carlisle’s Best Kept Secrets”. We were to create a live TV programme that lasted 5 minutes exactly. It was to include 2 30-second long VTs and 1 guest interview in the studio. Firstly, my group met up to discuss each of our ideas and our aspirations for the project. We also delegated out which roles everyone would take on. I took on the role of Camera Operator as I have wanted to specialise in camera work during this term. I was put on Camera 2 which was the main camera and consisted of mainly wide and mid shots. I worked with the other two camera operators, the director and the vision mixer to compose a shot list for the final filming of the tv programme. After the first meeting, we had a technical induction with Finn so that we would know how to work the camera, lighting and sound equipment. The group split into two teams; one with the intention of filming and editing the 30 second VTs and one in charge of the script. I was on the VT team. We were quite organised when it came to shooting the VTs as we set ourselves a deadline so we had enough time to edit both 30 second VTs, so that we had them at hand when we were rehearsing. For the VT inserts, we decided we would film two interviews; one in Foxes café and one in the café, Lost on a Mountain. Before going to the cafes, we first had to call them and ask permission to film in each café and ask for a possible interview with the manager of each. Both managers were satisfied with giving an interview and we arranged times and dates with both. On the day of filming in the cafes, we all met up at Lost on a Mountain first. The café was small yet unique and allowed for a lot of stylistic shots for the VTs. For the interview with the owner, we used a two-camera set-up but in the edit we unfortunately only used one of the shots. Regrettably, the lighting in the café was quite dark and we forgot to bring some portable LED lights with us so the interview, in my opinion, is quite dark. Filming in Foxes café went smoother. We set up for the interview in a well-lit area in the café, using natural light from the wide windows. We then edited the VTs as quickly and efficiently as possible to have them ready for rehearsals. On the final day of rehearsals and the day of filming, we started off well with a smooth first run-through. The set was perfectly established and the presenters knew exactly what they were supposed to do. I knew exactly what shots I had to do; start on a wide shot of the two presenters, then widen out to an extra wide shot when the guest was introduced. If I was to do things differently I would’ve liked to have been the vision mixer or director. I would’ve liked to have control of what was on air and the general look of the tv show.
