PEOPLE WE MEET ON VACATION 2026 — dir. Brett Haley
THE SOCIETY → 1x03
Thanks to the weed's effects, Gus was starting to feel a sense of calm wash over him, dulling the insurmountable guilt he'd been plagued with ever since he'd woken up that morning. It was Valentine's Day, and he had a perfect girlfriend, a woman he loved more than he'd ever loved anything. But despite his best efforts, he just couldn't muster the care or attention she really deserved. In fact, he'd forgotten about the day entirely, and was quick to follow Hazel's lead, agreeing to everything she'd suggested in order to quash some of that guilt, including attending tonight's party. But after a day of forced smiles and social interaction, Augustus was exhausted, and just wanted to crawl under the covers and disappear. But since he couldn't think of a valid enough excuse to leave, risk disappointing her, smoking in the bathrooms was the next best thing.
Gus engaged in light banter with the guy in the toilet stall, grateful it was a stranger who wouldn't judge his actions. But the next voice that carried through certainly would. Immediately, he was more alert, pushing up straighter against the tiled wall. "Max?" He was equally alarmed, his twin being one of the last people he'd ever expect would barge her way into the male toilets during a school party. But perhaps he shouldn't have been so naive. He immediately dropped the joint, tucking it into the side of his leg, out of sight, although he could do nothing about the smell, and his cover was blown immediately.
Even though she tried to hide it, Gus caught his sister's look of dismay, pity maybe, and it caused a lump to form in his throat. "What are you doing?" He asked defensively, guilt flaring. "You do realise this bathroom isn't for you, right? I know you're intellectually challenged, but I didn't think you were blind." It was only the shame talking, nervous about being caught, but it did little to sway her, Max joining him on the floor a moment later. "I'm not - giving you anything. I don't even have any left," he lied, self-conscious. No point in them both being in trouble.
Realising she wasn't looking for a fight, only reassurance, Gus finally sighed, letting his twin melt into his side, finding comfort in it despite his mood. "Everyone dies alone, Max. That's one of the only things I'm certain of." Knowing it wasn't at all what she wanted to hear, he chuckled, lightening the mood. "C'mon, sis. You're not one to give up so easy. What about these girls makes them so unapproachable? You could talk to a brick wall, if you tried. Besides, I can't just go. Hazel Grace is here." He shrugged his free shoulder, knowing he couldn't just abandon her, even if she was having fun with their friends, without him.
"Okay, ouch," Max reacted, her nose crinkling as she pulled a face at her twin's biting comments. Luckily, she'd grown used to them by now, the sarcasm rolling right off her. They'd said far worse during times where they were genuinely irritated with one another, anyway. "You're the one who's intellectually challenged if you think this is a good place to smoke. Miss Oswald is like — ten steps away, and you're probably inhaling more jockstrap sweat than anything else. Gross." She groaned, settling further into him, allowing the thrum of music to drown into the background, if only for a moment. In her excitement, she'd gotten too overstimulated. "Who even gave it to you? The weed. When did you start smoking?" Knowing it'd trigger a bad mood if she started questioning Gus too much, Max influenced the curiosity in her tone, opposed to the concern. Hopefully, this was merely a party experiment, and not a bad habit he'd picked up. She couldn't imagine it'd be good for his health.
"Shit. Well, I'm not okay with that poetic statement. Like, at all. I wasn't even born alone. You know that, you were there. Can't we just make a pact to die together too?" She was only half joking, genuinely hating the idea of doing anything in life without her brother. They were no longer attached at the hip, but that didn't mean Max was any less dependent on him. "A brick wall would be easier, at least it wouldn't laugh in my face," she pouted, reliving the experience she'd had on the dancefloor moments before she'd ran off to find Gus. She'd asked Carla to join her, and Carla had almost spit out her drink. Mortifying. "The Career girls are gorgeous, but they're evil. I don't even know what I was thinking. I wish Marina was single, but I don't even know if she likes girls. My love life is a hopeless shambles."
Redirecting her attention then, Max pulled away so that she could meet Gus's eye, tilting her head at him. "Okay, fair. But if that's the case, why are you in here smoking? You should be amping up the romance to level one hundred, Gus. This is like... the perfect place to do that, it's literally the day of all days for couples. Stupid flying baby decorations and glittery hearts galore everywhere." She sighed, nudging his leg with her own. "Go get 'em, tiger."
"Hey, can I have some of that?" Adeline stumbled toward the couches before collapsing down beside a group of girls she'd never met before. She was already far too drunk, her tolerance low and unchallenged — but now her heart was racing and the room was spinning and surely some more would help? Or not. She grimaced after swallowing down the remnants of the cup the redhead had passed her, and kindly passed it back empty, shuddering. "Gross." With a sigh, Ade shut her eyes and dropped her head onto the blonde's shoulder, willing the dizziness to pass. "How come no-one's ever told me how exhausting it is to make out with someone? Like, I'm not a fucking Career, I don't have that kind of stamina."
Max's eyes widened at the sudden intrusion, although perhaps she shouldn't have been surprised. The whole purpose of this party was to begin friendships, to solidify who's table you'd be sitting at during lunch. She just hadn't expected someone so... cool to join the small group she'd formed. This girl was hot, and drunk, and seemingly far more confident than the others considering how boldly she'd approached them. Perhaps that was the liquor's doing. Either way, Max was intrigued, her eyebrows raised high as if it were the most shocking news she'd ever received. "Excusez-moi?! You were making out with someone? Here?" Now she was internally berating herself for missing it. "Scandalous. Who was it? Were they good? Did you like it? Minus the exhausting part. That, I can only imagine."

“Hey,” Eva started, suddenly remembering something she'd seen before class that day, mug of tea clutched in hand. "Did anyone else see that guy Addie got with at my party today? I think he was talking to her by the lockers. Has anyone else met him before?” The girls were currently draped across Eva’s bed, only an hour in to their first ever group sleepover. Adeline, however, was suspiciously late, which had reminded Eva of the topic in the first place. But it didn't really matter to her what they talked about, feeling enthusiastic regardless now that she actually had friends to gossip with. "He seems cute?"
Max was thrilled to have been invited to her first ever sleepover, and had to remind herself several times during the day prior to tone herself down. Their friendship was still relatively new, and she ran the risk of scaring the girls off with her excitement. But when Eva's question came out, the promise of gossip sprung upon them, Max couldn't help herself from speaking out first, practically bouncing off the bed they shared. "Oh, you mean William?" Her face was all expression, eyebrows wiggling, knowing that most of the girls in their year found him attractive. "Can't say I've had the pleasure. Every time I ask Ade about him she goes mute, as if he's sucked the tongue right out of her mouth." Max giggled, hoping their tardy friend would spill the details later on. "Do you think that's why she's late? Because she's having a slice of William pie? Ooo la la. "
“Uh – hei! Are you here for the party?” Eva hadn’t even turned any music on yet, but she was hoping her place would fill up fast once she had.
“Well, duh. This is all anyone’s going to be talking about at school next week, and I am not risking having FOMO. Also, I don’t know anyone. So what better way than to make friends than having a par-tay, right? You get it. That’s why you’re hosting. I’m Max.” With a friendly smile, Maxine surpassed the doorframe, making her way inside. “Okay, this place looks great. Very cutesy, very demure. But we need to get the music on like… yesterday. You know, to loosen everyone up. I’m thinking Little Mix, but that’s just personal preference, you can choose whatever, obviously. Just a suggestion.”

10 YEARS OF SKAM
When SKAM first hit the screens in 2015, no one quite knew what it would become. But it didn't take long for the series to become something far more than just “regular” entertainment. SKAM became a mirror for a generation - and, for many, the first place where they felt truly seen. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the show's premiere on NRK, and with that in mind, it's touching, nostalgic and natural to look back - and certainly appropriate to celebrate what is arguably one of the most influential Norwegian shows of all time.

It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. I made out with Eva. The feelings that arise don’t necessarily mean you’re lesbian.
