Jonas let his arms drop, faking a pout at her dismissal of their embrace. He knew heâd done wrong in turning up late, but he was trying his best to fix her annoyance. âHallo, beautiful.â He grinned, intertwining his fingers with her own, and choosing his following words very carefully. âI was with Gus. Planning for tonight.â Jonas used his free hand to gesture to the backpack he was wearing. He shook a little, so that she recognised the sound of beers clinking together. Heâd also picked up a few grams of weed, but avoided mentioning that, knowing she wouldnât be impressed. Â
âI wanted us to have a good time. All of us, but especially you.â Looking up at Williamâs house, he raised his eyebrows. âNow are you going to stand here and tell me off all night, or shall we go inside and have some fun? I promise I will make it up to you.â
Of course, nothing actually dire had happened in his absence, but for Eva, it was enough to have caused some panic. When Jonas wasnât by her side, she didnât know where he was, what he was doing, what he was thinking. It was a spiral she hadnât learned to stop yet, and so had to continue down its path. Sheâd wait for an explanation, let her anxiety settle, theyâd kiss and make up, and then go and enjoy themselves. It was the only way she knew.Â
Trying to avoid looking at his grin, knowing it made her weak at the knees, she focused on their hands, sighing heavily at his greeting. His touch always brought her comfort, and despite her still racing heart, she felt much more confident now that he was there, so she held on tight. She shouldâve known he was with Gus, but she couldnât ever be sure. At least heâd brought alcohol â thatâd settle her nerves. âJa, okay. But please, Jonas, tell me next time. I looked stupid, standing here all alone.â
Finally meeting his gaze, she appreciated his thought and decided to let it go. He was here now, and that was all that mattered. She nodded, unable to help the smile that crossed her face. âFint. I want that, too. Just one kiss, and then you can go in and make it up to me.â Pushing up onto her toes, a hand slid around his neck, pulling him closer.
Kelly was unsure why sheâd ended up in the nightclub. Rick had warned their group to stay close, to travel in pairs, at least until theyâd found some semblance of trust with the rebels and their town. Yet here she was anyway, alone and disoriented, the music a dull throbbing in her ears. Perhaps sheâd been desperate to rekindle with her old self, to find a glimmer of normality. The younger rebels seemed to be doing a good job at holding onto their innocence, but seeing Eva now, Kelly realised that part of herself was long gone. Her refusal to speak didnât stem from their past, from their lost friendship, or their triangle with Jonas. It more so stemmed from fear, of how she might sound, of someone noticing the change. Rick, Daryl, Camden â none of them had known her before. Eva had. Kelly was far from prepared for the comparison, the reminder of a life that seemed so far out of reach.
The silence extended for a while, but Eva made it apparent she was in no rush to leave. Reluctantly, Kelly sighed, her head turning towards the other girl, her expression unchanged. The initial approach had taken her by surprise, not having expected to cross paths with anyone from her home District; but now she felt numb. Had the last few years been simpler, perhaps Kelly wouldâve been thankful to see her. Happy, almost. Now the mere thought of conversing with Eva left her feeling tired. âWhat do you want me to say?â It was an honest question, her tone carrying weight behind it. âYou donât know me anymore, Eva. Iâm not the same person I was.â
Eva shouldâve been satisfied in the knowledge that sheâd been right all along. It wasnât just her being anxious over nothing â approaching Kelly was a bad call. Her memory hadn't failed her. Yet she felt the opposite of comforted, the nervous pit in her stomach growing bigger, colder. Eva was alone there, friendless, and Kellyâs dismissal was hard to swallow despite having expected it. âI⌠donât know,â Eva nearly stammered, the surge of confidence that had compelled her to come out in the first place quickly dissipating. She hadnât been expecting flowers and rainbows of course, but for Kelly to have nothing to say surprisingly hurt more than being confronted by her. âI used to know you,â she tried, voice low, unsure. âWe used to know each other better than anyone else. Back then, I.. didnât think that would ever change.â

Eskild gasped when he looked up from his phone, equal parts surprised and pleased to see her. "â Is that Eva?! Hei, kjĂŚre. What are you doing loitering out here?" He pulled her in for a hug and kiss before moving back, holding her at arm's length for a moment. "Girl, do not tell Noora you saw me here tonight, I mean it. She will kill me. She made me promise not to come but I was far too curious to stay away."
"Hei," Eva responded in a rush, also initially startled but equally relieved. Finally, a familiar face. She smiled, returning the greeting, grateful once again for her growing friendship circle. She hadn't even thought of reaching out to Eskild. "Oh, I'm just waiting for Jonas. I wasn't sure who else was coming," she shrugged, sheepish. It was technically the truth but it still made her feel embarrassed that she'd been caught waiting around, which was exactly what she'd wanted to avoid. But Eskild's next words pulled her from her worries, confused by the comments. "Okay, I won't. But.. why would she care if you came? Isn't she sick?" And what, exactly, was he curious about?
Jonas ignored the buzzing of his phone, considering how close he already was to their arranged meeting spot. He knew he was late, and was trying to avoid a scolding. So, with his cheekiest grin, he ran up to Eva from behind and wrapped his arms around her. âI know, I know. Do not say anything, Eva, Iâm sorry.â Gus had diverted his attention away, again. But boys would be boys, right? âI am here now. Letâs go party!â
Eva took a few deep breaths, considering her options. She could always wait for a familiar face to pass by. That felt like the most comfortable option, but it seemed embarrassing. Why couldnât she just go in alone, make some new friends, like everyone else seemed to? But she'd already made friends, ones she loved. She didn't want to start over, just for a night. It didn't make sense to her. Sighing again, she crossed her arms. She was about to pick up her phone again, just for something to do, when arms embraced her. Despite her annoyance, she felt an overwhelming surge of relief at his presence. Takk gud.
Turning her head toward him, Eva opened her mouth to berate him, but he beat her to it. She shook her head in mute irritation, frustrated with herself that his smile made it so easy to forgive him. âNei, Jonas! We are not going anywhere until you tell me where youâve been? Iâve been here alone for ages, and now, not even a hello?â She pushed against him, turning to face him instead, eyebrows raised in question.
âJonas, hva i helvete?! Where are you? Pick up!â Eva hissed into her phone as partygoers passed her by, smiling at them sheepishly as she moved out of their way. Heâd promised to meet her there, on the corner, but he was late. Again. Turning in her spot, Eva sighed in frustration, watching her peers head around the corner, toward the music. Noora had already confirmed she was sick, and none of them had heard from Adeline much lately. The other girls weren't responding and it left Eva fretting. She really didnât want to go in there alone.
âUh â hei! Are you here for the party?â Eva hadnât even turned any music on yet, but she was hoping her place would fill up fast once she had.

With Jonas occupied for the evening, Eva had opted for a night in, curled up on her bed with a bowl of ice-cream. But it didnât take long for her insecurities to set in, feeling incredibly lonely, itching to call him, call anybody. The only problem was, she didnât have any friends. Not anymore. Instantly, she thought of Kelly. Eva knew she was in town. The group sheâd shown up with had caused a big fuss upon arrival only recently, and now they kept to themselves on the other side of town. Eva hadnât dared approach. She wasnât sure exactly what got her out of bed and into a skirt, but not an hour later, she was at the townâs only nightclub, scanning the room for any familiar face, anyone she might've met at school so far. Her stomach dropped when she realised she knew none. None but Kellyâs. Eva hesitated, seeing the girl alone at the bar. But that same misplaced confidence somehow forced her feet forward, and a few moments later, Eva was standing beside her. âHi!â She called out over the music, announcing her presence. She was shot a glance, assumedly one of surprise, but was given little else. Eva sighed. âYou canât ignore me forever, you know. We both live here now.â Silence. She reached out, tapping Kellyâs shoulder. âCome on, Kel, say something.â
Youâre a super smart girl, youâre brilliant, itâs stupid!

âI think so too. If we are spending the rest of the year with these people, it is best we know them.â Noora was nervous about the idea of meeting so many people at once, but she trusted that Eva would ensure the environment wasnât too out of control. If Noora became uncomfortable, she had the girls as a safety net anyway, already having confirmation that Sana and Adeline were also in attendance. She wanted to get to know them better, more than anything else. âLadies first is the best rule. But hei! What is wrong with Biebs? Everyone will sing along, even the cool boys. You know you love me, I know you care,â Noora sang, trying to supress her laughter.
âAvtalt. Before the war, we moved districts. I had to start over completely â new school, new friends. It was horrible, walking those halls and knowing no-one. Thatâs⌠how I met Kelly.â She looked down, uncomfortable, before attempting to move on. "I only wish someone had thrown a party like this for us back then.â Eva sighed, glancing around the room. She only hoped what sheâd organised would be enough. âSo, are you excited? Is there anyone you wanted to meet?â
ââLadies firstâ should be the only rule,â Eva laughed. The blonde suddenly broke into song, and Eva stared at her in mock disapproval, both amused and surprised. âAnd here I was, thinking you were so cool! But fine. We will play it now, then itâs done.â Grinning now, Eva found the song on her phone and played it aloud instead, joining her friend for the chorus.

Jonas smiled as he heard the message alert on his phone, already knowing who it was. Heâd told Gus that he needed to be alone with her today, smart enough to know that plans with his best friend on Valentineâs day were unacceptable. Despite Alexandriaâs dire circumstances, heâd managed to scrape together some flowers, and a tray of chocolates. It wasnât much, but he hoped Eva appreciated his efforts. He texted back a quick âDa beautiful xxxâ, and began his journey towards her home.
It wasnât long before he was at her doorstep, presents in hand, knocking on wood and waiting patiently for her to answer.
Eva bit her lip in anticipation, unable to hold back a grin when her phone buzzed in response. To her, it seemed like forever since the two of them had spent time alone, and she couldnât wait. She understood he still had close friends and she didnât anymore, but that irrational side of her never wanted him out of her sight. Today meant she could finally have him alone.
Jumping up when she heard the knock at her door, she moved fast, straightening her skirt before opening up. âHuh,â she took him in, her heart squeezing both at his smile, and the gifts in his hand, though she tried to keep a thoughtful expression. âI donât think I have seen a delivery man as cute as you before. You should definitely come more often.â Unable to play coy any longer, she grinned, suddenly pulling him toward her, wrapping her arms around his neck. âHei,â she mumbled in between kisses, not wanting to pull away.
âIt was the coolest thing Iâd ever seen. The relief on Archieâs face.â
