Thinking about how both An and Akito are independent not because they wanted to but because they learnt it out of necessity. Not saying that they were completely neglected as children but I do think they were left to fend for themselves often with two working parents, and radder and Shinei are shown to be extreme workaholics because of how much they love their jobs. Akito specifically still had Ena when he was younger but after she started struggling with art in junior high I imagine he suddenly had no one left to rely on. Which is probably why in early game he always thought of solving things on his own, and why the whole "rely on me more" thing with Touya means a lot to his character.
