- EH!? Was it you the person who missed me, Yamato-san?!

- Aah~! I never expected you to like me so much~! I guess it really makes a difference to not have someone with such a good music taste around like me~!

“You,” Hikari asked, feigning surprise. “Tart? I never would have guessed.” But her breath caught when he reached out to brush her hair out of her face. It always came loose during shows, even when she tried to stay to the side and away from the crowd. Hikari had stopped worrying about what she looked like after shows.

She tugged at the hem of her shirt self-consciously.

Yamato led the way to a shop that he knew would still be opening. Hikari was still learning Japan After Dark. All of her favorite places had locked their doors for the night hours before. 

After small talk, they lapsed into silence–which Hikari thought was comfortable, although Yamato looked like he was trying to come up with something more to say. She never associated Yamato with chatter. That was her brother, and to a lesser extent his brother, and Mimi. Miyako and Daisuke too. Hikari was used to being the listener. She didn’t mind listening to his silence.

“I would’ve thought you wouldn’t want to be on your feet after a whole show,” she said, looking genuinely surprised. Her feet hurt, and she’d been allowed to lean against a wall while she did her job. She took another bite of cake and leaned her chin on her hand. “There are probably still after parties going. I bet we can find one, if you want.”

“Next time Taichi loses a bet, he has to buy me a whole one of one of these,” she said, pointing to the half-eaten cake samplers with her fork. She said it with lazy confidence. Taichi wasn’t very good at picking his battles. It was only a matter of time. “Maybe I should have saved the hot chocolate for next time, though. I’m never going to sleep tonight.”

Yamato finally realized what was getting to him.  She was treating him too normally; ‘known you since I was eight’ normally, ‘little brother’s other half’ normally.

She had cake in her, so she was probably safe to approach.  He reached across the table and caught her mug, since her hand was attached. 

(Guaranteed really warm.)

After that sudden action, the words were slower, but Yamato pressed on. “Hikari-chan, are you okay with this whole dating thing?  …I never asked. I probably should have. I can’t really tell.”

He bit his lip.  “It’s not the easiest gig.  I’m not the easiest guy.”  Right, she’d probably figured that out over the better part of a decade.  But they were words he had to say.  “I’m not asking how you feel; I’m asking if this is what you want.”

“I mean, look– I didn’t ask you to come help me out in order to get a girlfriend.  But… you know that, right?”  Pretty sure she did.  Hikari seemed to pick so much up on some intuitive level, Yamato figured it was why she let everyone else bother with words.

…So why was he explaining himself?  Maybe just to get it clear in his own mind.  “On the other hand, I don’t mind.  I don’t think it’s a bad idea.  And, you know me– I think everything is a bad idea.”  Yeah.  In spite of other people deciding on it first, in spite of potential multiple conniption fits this could cause… he wanted to see where this could go.  He wanted it to go somewhere.
