Summary:  

Dean’s got orders to follow, and he’s gotta do it without getting his wings in a bunch. He’s on a Heavenly mission: Observe the human Castiel, and if the demon blood he’s infected with poses a threat, eliminate him. Though, honestly, Dean’s pretty sure his Father doesn’t really see that second part as optional. And when Dean actually meets the guy, he’s gotta agree. Castiel’s abrasive, violent, utterly faithless.

And completely gosh darn fascinating.

Excerpt: 

There’s a vertical line of squares on the wall opposite, standing out from where Dean is huddled in the shadows. They’re an interesting set of pictograms, and he’s relatively sure they’re not part of the exhibits. Not unless humans are more easily entertained than he’d thought. 

A camera, a knife and fork, a lit cigarette, all picked out in simple, stark, black lines and encircled in red, with a great big, diagonal red stripe through the centre.

A very clear message, it seems, a set of directives, beautifully simple orders to follow. 

Do Not Do These Things. 

So why the frick is the human he’s watching holding a lit cigarette? Why is he drawing it to his mouth, soft lips wrapping around the end, the embers illuminating his face as they flare? The human exhales, a plume of pale smoke billowing around his feet, and Dean licks his own lips. 

Castiel. 

Person of interest in heaven, a receptacle for demon blood as an infant, current hunter of monsters, and Dean’s mission - maybe target, if the human so much as twitches wrong.

Oh, and apparently, an idiot that’s managed to miss the blatantly obvious instructions on the opposite wall. 

Dean shifts awkwardly on his haunches, trying to shuffle back further into the statue’s shadow, hands clutching at the marble. His wings rustle as they move with him, curling to cup his body, the blue-black feathers blending into the darkness quite effectively. Ironically, the statue he’s chosen to hide behind depicts an angel, face buried in its hands, like it can’t bear to watch what this ‘Castiel’ is doing in its home either.
