Kanaya fidgets with her cup, casting a glance around the room once more in an effort to recognise anyone worth talking to. She’s more looking for a distraction, really - Vriska had dragged her here (”you’ll be a great wingman, don’t worry”) and promptly disappeared, Tavros in tow. There’s no telling what they’re up to, and searching them out is definitely a bad idea. But if she leaves, Vriska will inevitably do something horrible and call in need of rescue. So she stays.

The music pounds up through the floor, nearly shaking her resolve straight out of her head. The tune has changed to something less fluid, more like a rave beat than a nightclub number, and the crowd in the room begins to shuffle as some head downstairs to the dancefloor. A few new faces make their way into the room, and a fresh, hefty whiff of alcohol follows the crowd.

Kanaya turns around to face the table behind her, anything to avoid the stench. This cup had been filled and shoved into her hands before Vriska’s classic disappearance. She has no idea what’s in it. Probably not poison, though. She gives it a cursory sniff, and swirls the liquid around once, twice. She is about to raise it to her lips when footsteps sound behind her. She holds her drink to her chest just in time to startle, jumping at the sudden proximity of another person.

The palace halls echo in tones of marble, deafening in each beat. Kanaya strides with purpose tonight. She will see the empress again, and if she is lucky she will leave with an agenda clearer than crystal. Already, the first step of her plan is a success.

Doubt crowds in as it always does, but Kanaya is quick to dismiss it this time. The same excuse will no longer be sufficient. Instinct is all she has, and her gut tells her to stay on the path of creation, as it has for sweeps now. She has drawn up sketches in numbers of which the count is lost in preparation for this night, yet in her grasp she holds only one.

The guards accompanying her begin to slow their pace, then stop in front of an enormous, gilded door, iridescent in fuchsia flush and set deep into an archway. The troll on her left signals to one of the guards flanking the entrance, and they ask for a name.

Kanaya Maryam, she offers, and the doors part to reveal a glittering rose-gold oasis, an elegant throne waiting at the far end of the room. A few figures posted around the perimeter are uninteresting to her, all attention commanded by the empress herself.

Kanaya’s name is announced, any echo left behind swallowed up by a thickening of the air. She takes her first step onto a wide, fuchsia carpet, and some invisible force seems to reel her in. She comes to rest only steps away from Feferi Peixes, empress of Alternia and hopefully future model of a beautiful gown.
