Started Human Acts by Han Kang today! I drew it from my TBR tote where I keep a dozen or so books I’d like to read soon. This way there’s some element of surprise and excitement when picking my next read. It has been such a vibrant May so far, busy in a good way. Happy weekend 🌷

my toxic xennial trait is that i believe something should either be software (in which case after i download it i shouldn't need to be connected to use it) or a web page (which shouldn't require me to download anything to use it, however badly, in a browser). fuck your mandatory single function constant connection apps
You’re so right. Say more
Yes. YES. Why the fuck do I need a goddamn SUBSCRIPTION to use MS Word or Excel. It’s total bullshit.
On that note, does anyone have any recommendations for Word Processors that you buy once (or are free!) and then just live on your computer forever? I know assume they must (still) exist, I just haven’t looked into it yet.
Free office suite – the evolution of OpenOffice. Compatible with Microsoft .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx. Updated regularly, communi
Libre office is free and more than that its code is open source which basically means it belongs to all of us. Anyone can contribute to its improvement and anyone can use it.
It's been around for a long time and is arguably less powerful than word office (it could have been different because of past politics but it may well be in the future) but still more than enough for any individual or professional.
Leave Microsoft behind and don't look back !
LibreOffice Fucking Rules and is a full office suite, which includes a program similar to Excel, a program similar to Powerpoint, as well as a math program and Libre Office Draw, which isn't great for doing actual drawings but IS great for making flowcharts. It's not just a word processor, it's all of this:
LibreOffice.Org has a wonderful support forum that is full of questions people have had over the years, so if you're having a problem with any of the programs you can search "how to do X in libre office" and you will very likely find an answer.
Draw can also open, read, and edit PDFs. I had a customer who called me yesterday and was looking for an Adobe Acrobat Pro license and the one functionality she needed was document signing and my friends you do not need to pay fucking adobe $300 a year to sign PDFs.
I used Libre Office Writer to create my Fuck Google pamphlet and save it as a PDF; it is just a fully functional word processor. You can also use it to save in .Docx and .RTF and .PDF if you have to save documents in a specific format for any reason.
For 99.999% of people using office suites, Libre Office will provide all the same functionality of Microsoft Office with none of the subscriptions and all of the control you could want. There is a *slight* learning curve to some things, and the interface might look a bit old-fashioned to some people, but it is well worth it to download if for no other reason that having a non-subscription, non-internet-based (Word doesn't actually store its dictionary locally anymore! Not for like six years! You may need to have internet to get fucking spell check to work!) word processor that will never redirect you to the fucking microsoft store.
All of this is great, but I still needed Word and Excel. So I bought a copy, one that is local and limited to my computer only. It wasn't very expensive and it was very worth it. You don't have to get Office 360.
Microsoft is definitely trying to minimize how available that option is, but you can still get a perpetual (one-time) license of Microsoft Office. If you *do not* need Outlook, what you are looking for is "Microsoft Office Home and Student" and if you *do* need outlook you are looking for "Microsoft Office Home and Business" - there's a difference of around $100. (Those are links to the 2021 edition, which is the most recent release as of 1/11/2023)
These programs are digital downloads with a product keycard, meaning that they do not come with installation media; when you download the software, make sure to save a copy of the download somewhere, and make a note of the account information for registration, since the keycode can't be used multiple times and will be linked to a Microsoft Account (so if you need to install the software on another computer later you will need the microsoft account info to login and verify).
With both Microsoft and LibreOffice licenses it is important to continue getting new software when older software is no longer patched or supported; sometimes it's legitimately not planned obsolescence, it's that it's unreasonable to ask developers to patch and maintain outdated software with a miniscule user base. With Libre Office this isn't a problem because you can just download the updated editions as they're released; with Microsoft this will still cost you money and *eventually* they are going to go subscription only the way that Adobe has for most of their programs. They really, really, really want to go subscription only and Microsoft users should be prepared for that.
I’m still using my 2007 MS Office suite and it works just fine. I run it on the latest Windows build, because fuck subscription licenses. I re-install it from the disc every time I upgrade.
What you have just done is informed me that there are a minimum of ~20 unpatched vulnerabilities in your office suite that would allow me to remotely install software on your computer. Or, better yet: you haven't just informed *me* of this, you posted publicly on the internet so you have just informed *4chan* of this.
Office 2007 has been out of support for six years now.
I'm sure it works just fine, but the fact that it *works* does not mean that it is safe to use. The reason people say to update software isn't just because it stops working, it's because software that is out of support is not given any security update so any vulnerabilities discovered after the end of suppor just stay open forever. This is a huge part of the problem with things like insulin pumps and smart fridges going out of support - it is a security risk. So I'd recommend that you install the most recent version of Libre Office, which is A) free and B) regularly patched and updated as security vulnerabilities are revealed. OR just make sure to never install your Windows 2007 license on a computer that's connected to the internet.
Just to be perfectly clear, here is why you should not use software that is out of support:
Outdated software isn't patched and is therefore a security risk because hackers and malicious actors know that people will continue to use software with known vulnerabilities long past the date when the software is getting updates; using software that is out of support is not a uniformly dangerous decision but if you are going to do so you need to keep yourself informed of what vulnerabilities are discovered and the ways that you can mitigate them; if you are using outdated microsoft products you need to be especially careful about downloading any documents or files from the internet, and you probably want to fuck around with your settings and make sure that at the very least your computer is asking for an admin password in order to run software but be aware that is STILL not complete protection because many of the known vulnerabilities in Windows software bypass these sorts of protections. It *IS* more dangerous to use outdated software from large publishers than outdated software that was used by fewer people because they are MUCH more likely to be targeted by malicious actors; every hacker in the world knows that major businesses, nonprofits, educational institutions, and governments installed Word 2007 at some point and every hacker in the world knows that that didn't get uninstalled from every computer used by those businesses as it fell out of support so there is still a legitimate financial incentive to target people who are using that software. And if you are running outdated software, please don't announce "I've installed a backdoor into my new computer" publicly on the internet.
Anyway. Sorry to call you out on this but a lot of really bad security online is perpetuated by the idea that there's no problem with using outdated software because you bought a license for it sixteen years ago. The quick and easy fix for this is to install Libre Office, which will be able to open and edit all your Word 2007 files, and to uninstall Word 2007 on any computers you have that are connected to the internet. I'd say "just click the link above" but you in particular should be cautious about what links you click; type LibreOffice.Org into the URL bar of your browser and download a better word processor today.
For the record: Microsoft announced several major vulnerabilities for various Office products in 2022 and every product before Office 2013 was impacted. We had fucking *law offices* we had to upgrade from Office 2010 in order to get them back to reasonably secure footing.
I am extremely into the idea of saying "fuck you" to microsoft and owning the software you use, but the way to do that is to use open source software, not to keep running "unpatched vulnerabilities: the musical."
