As someone who had questioned their identity constantly, and had the occasional thought that “maybe I am a man”. But realizing it doesn’t feel right. Sometimes it feels like I have to not be myself to protect myself. I’ve always been the type of person who hardly corrects people anymore if they misgender me. It feels like it’s too much energy. I’ve always allowed others who know me well to speak up in my place, some have, some don’t know, and others may not even care. Like as an example I am still in Guiding, have been for 11yrs(not a brag) and I still find trouble with other Guiders not respecting me. As in recently (last month) I had a Guiding event and I was in the middle of the circle showing everyone how to do La-La(Guiding Thank-you ) I made the mistake of running in socks and I got called out for it. The part that bugs me isn’t that I got called out. It’s how I got called out, and how it took one the Co-Leaders I used to work with to whisper “they” three times before the other leader corrected herself but didn’t seem impressed. They say Guiding is meant to be a safe space for Trans and Non-Binary people comfortable in feminine spaces, which for the most part it is. The spaces I put myself into are pretty welcoming, I just wish it would be that way everywhere in Guiding.
