Dess Knight, it might be Kingdom Hearts logic!
So right now, this all operates on the assumption Dess is the knight. Something something antlers, baseball bat, musical motifs, yeah. But Dess last we saw her was just a normal lightner and well...
Whatever way you spin it this doesn't look like something that a normal lightner in the dark world could do.
So what is it? Well like I said in the title I genuinely think it's a Kingdom Hearts kind of scenario. What I mean by this is that I think Dess is split into two parts, like a Heartless and a Nobody.
Specifically, parts of Dess are both The Knight and the voice in the code. With the code voice being like a nobody, and the knight being like a heartless.
With the whole "find her" thing being tied to Dess, well I doubt The Knight is all there is to find of her. So the "her" we have to find I believe is the part of Dess that's speaking to us in the code.
Now how did this happen? Well I think December got lured into the shelter and something or another happened to her. Lured into the shelter by "the tail of hell". The shelter, being in a place cleared out from a forest would qualify as a place "where the forest would grow" if not for space for the shelter being made.
Somehow, in the shelter, Dess's soul and body got separated. Her body and mind trapped, talking through the code. I initially thought it might make more sense for the soul to be in the code but judging from the phone call in chapter 4, it seems a soul is necessary to make a dark world. A human soul specifically being necessary to seal a fountain (I mean we haven't seen a monster try but I still doubt they can). The knight seems to have at least some sort of consciousness, which with a soul could be just enough to give it some thought.
So the body and mind are in the shelter, what about the soul? Well I think either through direct interference or natural occurence, Dess's soul had the knight's body formed around it almost like a shell. When the knight screams, we see what looks like ribs opening up with something or another inside it. I think this… thing is the soul with the shell formed around it. Kris's soul is located in the chest after all, it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume the same is true for monsters. When our red soul is visible, we can emit a white light. When the knight opens it's chest, its white soul makes a red light, the inverse of ours.
If it's a heartless and nobody situation. Perhaps by defeating the knight in the shelter, breaking the shell, Dess's soul could reunite with her body. Like with a heartless and a nobody becoming one, Dess would be re-completed.
