Gibellina Vecchia - Il Cretto
You must go see the Cretto di Gibellina to understand the distributed pain, the pain that encompasses an entire town, a people. You must go to the Cretto to understand what it means to lose everything in a second. Everything: your home, your family, your futures, your past. The Cretto is pure pain crystallized in the absence of an entire town, of which the Cretto is the ghost, the memory, the absence. It is the awareness of our fragility, it is proof of our nothingness in the face of nature, it is the importance of memory, of holding onto pain so that it doesn't dissipate in everyday life and makes us accept the responsibility of being survivors. The whiteness of the Cretto is the absence of life, a pain that even birds see from the sky and avoid so as not to be part of it. It is the scream of a night, a tremor as long as a farewell, a breath that erased everything and everyone, stopping time and extinguishing a thousand lives like a breath that extinguishes a candle flame. As in the Cretto, the silence is also a deadly whiteness, a sense as acidic as pain, as bitter as memories. These memories you feel among the streets of the Cretto, empty, aseptic, indifferent, alien, unfriendly, not poetic in speaking of what is no longer there: the houses, shops, stores, cellars with barrels full of new wine, ovens smelling of freshly baked bread. The desolation born of death returns to us, the desolation where nothing blooms again, no song soars, and no verse is reborn. But this is why the Cretto exists. It is an endless tombstone, without names or dates, to remember the women, the men, the children, the animals, the memories, the smiles, the celebrations, the glances, the loves, the hopes that are no longer there. Because the Cretto must give you the icy immensity of pain, the sharp illusion of crying, it must show you the memory that bleeds tears as pure as the candor of the Cretto itself, so that everything returns as hope to restore strength to life and to the peace that is its mother.
