If Riku is the light, someone in this damn game has to be the darkness, and the most obvious candidate is sora (his darkside, the light casting the shadow that creates the darkness, etc).

So, if Sora IS the darkness, Riku accepting the darkness is not just a metaphor for him accepting his feelings for Sora, but also could be more literally about accepting Sora's darkness.

(Or maybe he's only accepted his own darkness, and he needed to conquer that first so he could accept Sora's darkness)

I have a feeling the main reason sora wanted to see other worlds was because riku wanted to, and sora knew riku would leave without him. It's a bit out there but the reason I believe this is in kh1 when the trio is talking at the tree, riku and Kairi are kind of having a philosophical convo about what is out there, and sora is like "Yeah whatever I don't care." He genuinely leans back and looks bored.
