…and that’s why he’s such an amazing character. he’s an idealistic kid who genuinely believes in serving the king, his people, and the general good. he sees the best in everyone, to the point where he cannot fathom their capability for harm or betrayal. the one time he is too kind to be smart is around the people who deserve it the least - but not to him. when faced with betrayal and murder, his response is not anger but a desperate need to understand why. he immediately accepts there’s something much bigger at play behind the actions of the people he still thought of as his friends, and his initial reaction is to make sense of it. he treats everyone with kindness because he truly cares. he imparts a profound lesson to Jean about love, loss, and the fragility of life. Jean remembers him not as a lifeless corpse hanging on his back, but as a warm, smiling face, and associates him with all that is good in him. Marco becomes Jean’s anchor in his most difficult times. he may have not accomplished remarkable feats or committed atrocities worth remembering, but he performed small, seemingly inconsequential acts that benefited others. he’s a true leader for keeping everyone grounded while playing the role of Titan bait during their most critical situation yet, and by prioritizing the wellbeing of the group over his own interests, even at the expense of his own grades or even life. he is so intelligent his mind was still connecting the dots about RBA’s true identities shortly before dying. he's not an underdeveloped character, not for those who paid attention to details
