Miraculous has been shown to be extremely symbolic from the pink rose in Weredad to the quiche pan in Mayura and that got me thinking that  the infamous hamster might actually have a bigger purpose than merely a running gag. 

There have been theories that it would be apart of the reveal but, with the help of a little research, I believe that it symbolizes their current situation.  While I found nothing on hamsters themselves, I found a connection between something associated with hamsters. 

Hamster wheels. 

The hamster wheel literally describes the concept of running in circles but making no progress. Doing things the same way, repeating the same mistakes, guided by a sense that motion is an important thing. Adrien even acknowledges this in Frozer when he says that he felt like it was the same old story over and over again and that thing will never change. Adrien keeps chasing Ladybug with no change in her feelings toward him (arguably) and Marinette keeps pinning after Adrien, contemplating about making a move but never really doing anything (arguably).
