Alexander Somervell a True Texas Hero

SOMERVELL, ALEXANDER (1796–1854). Alexander Somervell, soldier, and leader of the Somervell Expedition, celebrated as just one Texas Hero Remembered in Glen Rose on May 20th.   He was born to James and Elizabeth Somervell in Maryland on June 11, 1796, and moved to Texas in 1833 with a land grant from Stephen F. Austin’s in the second colony. . In October 1835, Somervell joined the volunteers marching from Gonzales to Bexar and was elected major. He participated in the siege of Bexar. He enlisted in the Texas army on March 12, 1836, and was elected lieutenant colonel of the first regiment of Texas Volunteers. He fought in the Battle of San Jacinto and remained in the army until June 7, 1836. He served briefly as secretary of war in David G. Burnet’s cabinet. Students, teachers and more are invited to come celebrate Texas Heroes Remembered. 9am to 7pm in Heritage Park – Glen Rose, Texas. #TexasHeroes

Texas Independence Day is March 2 and North Centeral Texas is waving the flag to honor our ancestors, Texians and Tejanoes who won our freedom from dictators in 1836.  Walk around the Hood County Court House and Acton by the gravesite of Elizabeth Crockett and read each tag.  March 2 meet the heroes.  Bring your kids.

“Stroll Through Texas History” & Enter THF Student History Fair

The Texas Heroes Foundation (THF) invites you to “Stroll Through Texas History” on March 2, 2016 from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, beginning at Acton Baptist Church at 3500 Fall Creek Hwy in Acton. Children can meet Texas Heroes, portrayed by the THF Team, partake in Elizabeth Crockett Memorial Ceremony, make period crafts, see black powder demonstrations, enjoy period music & performing art winners, view the Student History Fair, vote on People’s Choice Award and more.

2016 Texas Heroes Foundation Student History Fair Theme: “Exploration, Encounter, Exchange”

Awards – $200 best of show. Each category each level: $100 first, $50 second & $25 third and Group Award $100 to be shared. We encourage choirs and other groups to participate in group categories.

Senior Scholarship presented by the Texas Heroes Foundation.

Manuscripts must be mailed on or before February 15, 2016

All other entries must be submitted on or before February 28th or 29th of 2016

Texas History event, person, encounter can continue into the 1900s, but must begin prior to Dec. 31, 1899.

Research Manuscripts: Creative/Narrative/Expository/Poetry – Individual entries only. Must be original, factual or historically based, presented in any written form: Creative/Narrative/Expository/Poetry&Ballads. Entries must be typed and double-spaced. Use a 12 point common font type. Word-count less than 2,000 words. Place your research entry in a folder with brads. Provide a list of sources. (Doesn’t have to be an annotated bibliography.) Criteria for judging research manuscripts: 1. Historical content and accuracy (even if using a fictional account). 2. Contents relate to the topic of Texas Independence and history prior to the 1900s. 3. Uniqueness of the subject matter and writing style. 4. Content engages the reader. 5. Demonstrates wide, abundant research. 6. Grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Manuscripts must be mailed on or before February 15, 2016 to: TIDHF c/oPeggy Freeman 9106 Bellechase Granbury, TX 76049

Exhibits – Open to individual and groups. Exhibit size – no larger than 40 inches wide, 30 inches deep, and 6 feet high. Entries can include any combination of photos, research paper, artwork, 3-D models, etc. The theme/topic of the exhibit must be obvious. Students should be prepared to answer questions about their research and project. Criteria for judging exhibits:1. Historical content and accuracy. 2. Exhibit relates to the topic of Texas history prior to the 1900s. 3. Exhibit is organized, has visual impact, & correctly uses maps, photos, etc. 4. Demonstrates wide and abundant research.5. Clearly demonstrates the chosen theme and topic.

Artwork – Open to individual and group entries. Entries can include any painting or print style, sculpture, photography, garments, or any other art form. Artwork will be judged using the following criteria:1. Historical content and accuracy. 2. How well the artwork relates to the topic of Texas Independence and history prior to the 1900s 3. Creativity, technique, and uniqueness of style of artwork. 4. Visual impact. 5. All art work must be mounted stable enough to display or hang. If drawing or art work is on plain sheet of paper, flimsy, or cannot be properly displayed please attach it to something stable such as card stock, cardboard, foam-core, etc. to support the work so that it does not get bent, torn, etc. and can be displayed or hung up. 6. Artwork must be clean , not torn, bent, damaged, smeared. 7. Show your pride of work by presenting a clean, neat piece of artwork.

Videos/Power Point – Open to individual and group entries. Entries must be 20 minutes or less and can include either presentation or creative style of any kind. The video can be made from live video recording or using a combination of stills such as photos or graphics. You are welcome to consult with a video professional for tips on making the video, but you cannot engage his or her services for shooting, editing, etc. Criteria for judging videos: Historical content and accuracy (even if using a fictional account) 2. Relevance to the topic of Texas Independence and history prior to the 1900s. 3. Creativity and uniqueness of style. 4. Video flows well, is organized and clearly understood. 5. Good visuals and sound quality. 6. Engages the viewer.

Performing Arts – Ballads, scenes, duets, solo and groups 1. Historical content and accuracy (even if using a fictional account). 2. Relevance to the topic of Texas Independence and history prior to the 1900s. 3. Creativity and uniqueness of style. 4. Presentation flows well, is organized and clearly understood. 5. Historically correct details in the production including costumes and props. 6. How engaging the presentation is to the viewer. Tips: You may incorporate video images in your presentations. Example video or slide show with music, dancing singing. Presentation for judging will be done on Tuesday between 4-9 pm. Winners will present at the THF Student History Fair. Bring your entry forms at that time. Call to get a time to compete so you won’t have to wait too long. 214-675-5752

Website Designs – Open to individual and group entries. Entries can include either presentation or creative style of any kind of web design. It can be made live on-line or saved on a portable drive. The entry must open in html using a combination of original text, photos, video and graphics. These entries will be on display during the history fair. You are welcome to consult with a web design professional for tips on making the video, but you cannot engage his or her services for shooting, editing, etc. 1. Historical content and accuracy (even if using a fictional account) 2. Relevance to the topic of Texas Independence prior to the 1900s. 3. Creativity and uniqueness of style. 4. Website flows well, is organized and clearly understood. 5. Clear visuals and sound are required. 6. Must engage viewer.

Suggestions for topics are listed below. Students, however, should be encouraged to come up with their own unique ideas for entry topics. Special awards are sometimes presented. This year there is interest in the leadership of Tejanos in the Texans fight for a republic and in establishing the government. Also in ranch and ranchers and how they promoted Texas as the great state it is today. The Heroes, greater and lesser known, continue to be excellent topics.

Possible topics and suggestions for entries in Research Paper, Exhibits, Artwork, Videos, Webpage, Performing Art:

Biographies of various Texas settlers/founders and heroes such as Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston, William B. Travis, David Crockett, Jim Bowie, or even some of the lesser-known people like Juan Seguin, William Bryan, or Henry & Ben McCulloch.

Write about the life and perspective of one or more of Santa Anna’s officers, life and motivation of Santa Anna.

Write about what motivated men and women to join the cause for exploration, contact with other cultures, in the context of Texas Independence and history prior to the 1900s.

Write from the possible perspectives of wives and family members who lost husbands, brothers, and fathers in the war.

Why is Sam Houston’s battle strategy at San Jacinto still taught in military schools today?

Write from the perspective of one of Santa Anna’s soldiers.Write about the “runaway scrape”, various battles, the signing of the declaration for independence, or other events which brought about Texas Independence.

Were there any occurrences where brothers from both sides of war might have fought against one another? Write about this.

Research various facets of  war such as the events that took place, the strategies, the people, or the culture in Texas at that time.

What was life like for the early pioneers and how did Independence affect their lives or the families who moved to Texas after war in other places. (example: the Crockett family)

A 3-D model of the layout of the Alamo mission compound, battlements, forts, explorations and more. Paint or draw some of the people, places, and events from this time period and historical sites prior to the 1900s.

Sculpture might include a model of the Texas Heroes Monument in San Antonio, the Sam Houston statue outside of Huntsville, or the

Alamo, or the San Jacinto monument. Photograph some of the Texas Independence historical sites and historical sites prior to the 1900s.

The signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Travis’s speech to the men and women inside the Alamo. Re-enactments of some of the battle scenes and statehood celebrations.

Important events like women’s vote and how Prohibition facillitated that event in Texas. Who authored the bill.

Two or three soldiers talking about the upcoming battles… either from the Texians and Tejanos point of view, or soldiers from the Mexican army. War in Texas history prior to 1800s.

Industry prior to the 1800s–oil, gas, cattle, farming, manufacturing, fishing.

Texas becoming a state. Women rights in Texas. June 19th and the end of slavery in Texas.

History of historic sites in Texas and North Texas, Hood County: including landmarks like Comanche Peak. dinosaur tracks and more.

History of Native American, Texas from other cultures such as: Irish, German, French, Spainish and more

Railroad history in the time prior to 1800s.

Perform with slide show or video background with pictures of a battle, person, events that relates to your research

  ENTRY FORM

“Exploration, Encounter, Exchange”

All entries must be centered in Texas History before Dec. 31, 1899. An event, person, encounter can continue into the 1900s but must begin prior to that century.
