I am increasingly interested in scrutinising the people doing the scrutinising, because sometimes the person demanding that a Black academic prove their intellectual legitimacy has never stopped to ask what established their own.

Its a deeply frustrating case that should be a simple, run of the mill one of academic misconduct. But due to Arday's prominence and the opportunities it presented, it has been seized upon by right wing media. And in jumping to Arday's defense, a lot of progressives are unwittingly undermining sociology, critical race studies, and black academics as a whole by making it seem as though they shouldn't be held to academic scrutiny. We shouldn't forget allegations of plagiarism for the sake of the field or for one of its most prominent scholars. And though it may damage his career, in the long term showing that the field takes these kinds of issues seriously is overall a boon for its academic credibility. You can trust they aren't lying or copying because its proven that they check to make sure and hold those who do accountable.
