“And it’s not out of character for me?” Oliver asked, raising a brow, “Oh come on, you didn’t make any other friends? I can’t be that special can I?”

"Better you than me,” she shrugged. “The majority are total disasters. I don’t need additional drama in my life.”

“And I think that’s the best birthday present yet.”

"Yes, my praise is the best gift of all. Also because I didn’t get you anything else.”

“Surely I’m not the only one who smokes but yes, including me,” Oliver said, “’Course I did, I haven’t had anyone to talk shit about life with except for the occasional Iris message. Are you saying you wouldn’t have missed me if I hadn’t missed you? Or just that you wouldn’t tell me?”

“I cannot really tell you, can I? That would be so out of character for me,” she pointed out. “However, it’s nice to have you around. At least one person I can stand.”

“Highest of praises,” Ronnie said with a dramatic bow, “Thank you.”

"You’re welcome, I saved the best compliments for your ears only.”

“Never realised it was a rule. Not that that ever stopped anyone” Oliver said, shrugging and then smiling a little at the other, “Miss me?”

“Ouch,” Ronnie said, “Not even a compliment on my birthday. You wound me, Mara.”

“What?” Oliver asked, “You suddenly not allowed to smoke here anymore?”

“Alright no jokes about me getting closer to thirty, we all know I’m a child at heart.”

She wanted to sleep, really. But tonight just wasn’t her night. Terrors plagued her dreams, as they often did; so, all she could do was sit in the dark, staring out at the water.

“What are you doing out here so late?”

Mara tried to fix her crumpled shirt before her sister noticed. “Went for a walk,” she said quickly. “You?”

“I sincerely doubt anyone entrusted me to look after kids,” PJ would protect the younger campers at all costs, he wasn’t cruel but looking out for them when and keeping them calm? He would not do that job well at all.

"Just keep them alive, that’s all. And try to minimize the weeping, it’s giving me a headache,” Mara sighed, then picked a pillow from another bed and threw it at his face. “Come on, let’s not waste time. The sooner we’re done, the better.”

“And the reason you’ve woken me up is?” PJ asked, gesturing for her to continue.

“I really hope this isn’t the reason you woke me up before 7AM,” PJ said, “Because this absolutely could have waited until later.”

"It was either me or Beth, and she’s in a nasty mood today,” Mara noted.

“I love Valentine’s Day, don’t you just love Valentine’s day?” Sophia said to the another. “It’s so romantic and cheery. I don’t even care that I’m single.”

“I think it’s one big grab for money. The guy was a patron of severely sick,” she said with a shrug. “I’d be more interested if there was a Aphrodite’s day.” 

“Valentine’s Day?” Konrad squinted at the other, sitting by the campfire as people slowly began to gather around it. “Oh Gods no, I don’t care for that. I’m only sticking around for the extra gooey s’mores later.”

“I’m sure he said more than ‘see ya on Sunday, peace out’. What are you not telling me?” Bethany looked up at the other from polishing her bow.

“I just saved you a lot of time, Beth. That’s the whole summary.”

“Thank you Mara, you’re as helpful as always.”

"But of course, anything for you,” she replied, her voice too sweet to take her seriously.

“Like a town into camp. So we wouldn’t have to leave,” Clary replied and then shook her head. “Sounds dumb I guess.”

"I’m pretty sure the majority would go insane. Sure, there are monsters outside, but the whole wide world is worth facing them.”
