Personally I love the take you have on Wukong's journey to fatherhood! I see a lot of content where he's portrayed as the picture perfect dad and while it's nice to have an idealized version of parenthood like that it's not realistic. (Not to say we should make every depiction of parents nuanced because I myself find comfort in the ideal. It just frustrates me whenever their struggles are constantly undermined). he's not a perfect dad but he's trying and I love that so much

Something I wanted to ask is your take on Wukong's characterization. I remember in one of the tags you stated that he was "constantly regressing and progressing" and that is SO fascinating to me. I would love to read your thoughts about the topic!! (and don't hold back please)

I’m so happy to hear that someone’s enjoyed my thoughts and writings about Wukong! I’ll try my best to explain how I view his character but it might not be the best explanation since I’m sort of rusty.

I don’t see Wukong as someone entirely bad or good, I think he’s ignorant in a lot of ways. For example in the JTTW after he’s committed all his crimes and is punished by being put under a mountain it’s of his own fault and doing that he isn’t there to protect his mountain and subjects. A lot of the times Wukong acts without consideration of the people around him, mostly for his own benefit.

But I do believe he also cares a great deal about others, though even then I think he justifies some of his more selfish acts by saying he also did it for their benefit.

After JTTW I like to think he’s still learning and growing, he’s still good at getting on people’s nerves but he’s trying to be more considerate of his surroundings and actions. It’s why in my AU he’s actually willing to hear MK out on a lot of his protests and complaints about the way he’s treated.

Wukong represents the human mind in JTTW, as I said he is constantly progressing and digressing. Wukong improves yes, he’s considerate of MKs feelings, he feels guilt for his past actions. But in consequence sometimes he tends to justify too many of MKs actions, he enables him too much, seeing himself as well as Macaque in him and wanting too badly to give him chance after chance rather than giving him consequence.

Even though he’s not entirely wrong that a harsh punishment wouldn’t help MK he’s also not realizing that he does need to put a foot down. In a sense a part of him is still viewing MK as a kid when he’s stated time and time and again that he isn’t.

Sorry this is turning into a ramble.

But in short Wukong while turning more considerate also digresses into an enabler of MKs more bad habits an actions. A short example of this is how he allows MK to continue avoiding sleep once he finds out why he does it.

He’s a character whose outright selfish actions have continuously caused him to not be there when others needed him. But he’s also someone constantly changing and given the chance to do better.

MK huddles close to Wukong really early on in an attempt to have control over at least one thing in his situation though it eventually grows into him finding genuine comfort and happiness in Wukongs presence.
