Norwegian Air Makes Oscar Wilde a ‘Tail Fin Hero’
The late gay Irish author is being honored with plane-sized portraiture.
Oscar Wilde — one of history’s most notable playwrights, who was imprisoned in 1897 for being in a same-sex relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas — is the latest icon to be one of Norwegian Air’s “tail fin heroes.”
The tail fin heroes project is a way of honoring prolific figures from history “who have pushed boundaries” by displaying their images on tail fins. The Irish writer’s portrait will appear on two aircraft: a Boeing 737 MAX and a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The honor comes on Wilde’s birthday, October 16.
“Our ‘tail fin heroes’ offer us a perfect chance to pay tribute to some of the greatest Irish men and women of all time. Oscar Wilde has inspired generations and we are very happy to have one of the greatest poets of all time adorn our aircraft,“ said Matthew Wood — senior vice president of Commercial Long Haul and New Markets at Norwegian — said of having the icon’s image on the plane, reports IrishCentral.
Wilde is the second Irish figure to receive the honor of being a “tail fin hero.” The first was Tom Crean, an explorer. Norwegian, an international low-cost airline, highlights heroes from the countries it operates in.
Wilde’s greatest claim to fame was the novel The Picture of Dorian Grey though he wrote many critically acclaimed plays, poems, and novels throughout his life. At present, Wilde’s memory is also being honored in The Happy Prince, a film directed and directed by out actor Rupert Everett, who also stars as the late author.
