This is the cutest thing

     “Can you imagine a world where everyone believed it without question? It’s so easy to dismiss what we don’t understand. Personally, I think it presents a good opportunity to teach others.“ The ones willing to listen, that is. So many liked to cover their ears and walk away before anyone could possibly change their mind about anything at all.

   Manta’s reaction to her family name prompted Takako to pause for a moment and stare. Foreign? …oh! He wasn’t wrong to think that. Silly her. She was so used to it that sometimes it slipped her mind how unusual it must have sounded to most others.

   “Yes, that would be because of my father. He’s German, you see, so I’m actually only half Japanese. He had planned to take my mother’s family name when they married, but my mother really wanted to take his, so Amsel it is~” Thankfully, not everything about her father’s side of the family tree was erased from her household despite the circumstances. It wasn’t a story for right now, but maybe someday she could tell Manta all about her parents’ beautiful love story. “Say, I have an idea. Why don’t we go somewhere else and talk some more? If you have the time, I think we should go get something to eat. I’m having fun talking to you.”

“People used to have strong spiritual beliefs in the past so it is not as hard to picture. But there is a lot that changed now.” No way, he thinks, in current age who would stop over this kind of thing? It was only a series of unfortunate circumstances which forced Manta to do so.

“Now you could get accused of raising a cult so you should watch out.”

He did not elaborate though, as food was a much more pleasant thought to have on mind, and he was maybe a little hungry after skipping lunch earlier. “There is a restaurant behind this row of buildings, we could check if there are any free tables” He said gesturing across the street.

So many words the child just simply did not understand. Her gaze focused on the email for a bit longer then she pulls her eyes away from the screen to look at the boy with a confused stare, head tilting a little.

“Why would Opacho want you to do that?”

“It’s just--! I didn’t hear you approach your feet are very light. Sheesh.” Cue his weak heart not being able to handle jumpscares.

     “There’s no need to panic, don’t worry.” But she had to admit, it was fun seeing his reaction, not that she was planning to torment the boy just for the sake of entertainment. That would be ghastly. With a soft laugh, Takako soon waved her hand  and shook her head at him. “Being able to see and hear spirits is already proof that you’re different from others. I’m sure not many would believe you and label you as crazy, but I’m glad there’s still someone like you out here, shaman or not. It’s still amazing.”

   With that out of the way, it was onto more important matters and her smile was renewed. “Can I ask your name? I’m Amsel, Takako. It’d be rude of me if I kept bugging you without even introducing myself at this point. Sorry about that.”

Different from others. No, it wasn’t hard to notice that the shamans were all unusual people with unusual views. The shamans were, not him.  He was just a boy. A regular boy that would become a salaryman in the future. He was of a different world. That is what Manta so far continued to believe.

And the prospect that it was not true anymore made the hair at the back of his neck stand.

“No you are right. Nobody besides shamans believe me. Not even my younger sister. But I know why. I would not believe me either.” No sometimes he still wondered whether he was crazy.
