abstract and modern art haters are sooo snobby like klein literally Created an entirely new pigment and then painted a canvas in a way where the brush strokes wouldn't be visible. the insinuation that people with no skill could reproduce that is so annoying because unless you are skilled at color mixing and painting you definitely couldnāt lmao
i hope it's okay to add this because i think it hits the nail directly on the head
Honestly, it's like picking up a book and saying "I know all these words, I can type, I could have written this" like there's no middle step between the technical ability and the finished work.

I have always been wary of the psychiatric industry, but its only very recently that i started to read anti-psychiatric works. Your blog is the first time i saw that the "chemical imbalances causing mental illness" is a myth, and honestly its something im having a hard time wrapping my head around.
Is it that mood regulation struggles, labelled as a mental illnesses, has more to do with outside factors instead of the person "just being that way"? Is it therefore unlikely for someone to have struggles with mood regulation if they cant identify any external causes that would cause them to be, for example, extremely agoraphobic or to have anger management issues? Im asking this for myself mainly, cause i always had intense agoraphobia no matter how i often go outside my home (in fact it was worse when i was a teen and i was outside the house in even more back then). I cant think of any reason for me to be like this than chemical imbalances in my brain.
the specific 'chemical imbalance' myth i was talking about in this post is the idea that depression is caused by low serotonin, and that therefore SSRIsāserotonin re-uptake inhibitors, ie drugs that cause a higher level of serotonin in the braināought to cure or at least ameliorate depression. this conjecture is belied by the fact that SSRIs don't, at a population level, reliably perform better than placebo.
although a neurobiological cause of 'mental illness' has long been the holy grail of psychiatry, the serotonin imbalance myth is far from the only hypothesis that psychiatrists and neuroscientists have proposed. so, a critique of the serotonin myth is not synonymous with, or generalisable to, a critique of every neurobiological mechanism purported to explain psychiatric diagnoses. you may be interested to know, though, that genomics and neuroscience have not identified a biological cause of any psychiatric diagnosis (p. 851).
all human experiences are biologically instantiated, including in the brain and wider nervous system. we are embodied beings. however, it is a leap to assume that such instantiation is automatically equivalent to a causal explanation or disease etiology. in other words, to deny that psychiatric diagnoses are known to be biologically caused does not mean we deny that thoughts and thought patterns express in the physical matter of neuroanatomy. this is a major philosophical sticking point to keep in mind whenever you're looking at something like, eg, a study that purports to show 'brain differences' in those assigned a certain psychiatric diagnosis. another thing to consider is whether these papers are plagued with methodological issues or financial conflicts of interest.
i can't possibly tell you why you exhibit agoraphobia. however, when i talk about social, economic, and environmental factors that may contribute to the patterns of behaviour labelled as 'mental illness', i'm talking about much more than the individual choice to leave your house. since phobias are 'anxiety disorders', i might start by probing into questions like: is the world you live in safe? do you perceive it as safe? do you or your community face existential threats that may confront you more obviously when you go outside? are you nervous around other people, and if so, might that be connected to fears (well-founded or not) about interpersonal violence and harm? do you think any of these anxieties may be connected to the hostility and inaccessible design of the social environment and economic conditions?
human behaviour and thought varies. some of those variations may be totally benign; others may be helpful or harmful to the person living with them. it would be weird if every single of the 8 billion people on earth experienced precisely the same amount of anxiety about any situation, no? all of this is to say: yeah, it's entirely possible you have been, for one reason or another (genetic, neuroanatomical, social, &c) predisposed to experience high, even debilitating levels of anxiety when leaving your home. most human characteristics develop from a tangle of social, environmental, material causesāie, from a combination of 'nature' and 'nurture'. what doesn't follow, though, is the claim that there is therefore a discrete, 'diseased' element of your brain or brain functioning that can simply be cured or eliminated through psychiatric intervention.
however, it is a critical point of anti-psychiatry to challenge psychiatric and neuroscientific claims to neurobiological determinism where psychiatric diagnoses are concerned. this is for many reasons, including: a) that these claims have not been demonstrated to actually be true [see above]; b) that they rob pathologised people of agency and self-determination [see: you're too sick to know you're sick, and the doctor will fix you now]; c) that they are often pushed by pharmaceutical companies with financial interests, or grant-funded researchers with... financial interests; d) that they are politically seductive in various eugenic, hereditarian discourses that seek to eliminate the biologically 'unfit' element from society.
this is implied but i just wanted to add- absolutely none of this means that emotional suffering is the fault of the individual or something unimportant. many ppl chafe against the idea that "mental illness" is not biologically caused because they think that biological causation is the only thing that could validate or legitimize their suffering. part of psych abolition is abandoning the dichotomy of "biologically ingrained inevitability VS things that are stupid + your fault". anatomical fault/genetics/hormones/biology are not the sole reasons why things happen + sometimes things do happen that are unexplainable!
it's okay to not know why you are agoraphobic because u don't need to know why in order to heal or be validated in yr suffering. further, even if they did identify a specific biological mechanism mediating your agoraphobia, addressing that mechanism could not possibly address the trauma it has likely caused, the social shifts it has likely caused, the cultural context in which it occurred, the economic/lifestyle impacts, the ways in which it has shaped your life history, etc. this idea that everything happens because of the body therefore shifting the body can change everything gives almost no thought to the millions of things outside the body which shape who we are + what we feel + why we do the things we do.
very cool how the gender binary in the emerging trad terf synthesis is like, there are two genders, the one that does bad things and the one that bad things are done to. the only thing in the world is immorality and it flows from unexperiencing agents to unacting experiencers.
which naturally appeals to people who would like to be perceived as inherently lacking the capacity for immorality. for whatever reason
anyway remember bell hooksās very cogent critique of second-wave feminist organizing inĀ āsisterhood: solidarity between womenā where she argues that by ābonding as āvictimsā, white womenās liberationists were not required to assume responsibility for confronting the complexity of their own experience ⦠Identifying as āvictimsā, they could abdicate responsibility for their role in the maintenance and perpetuation of sexism, racism, and classism.ā itās not by accident that terf gender essentialism dovetails so much with other biological-determinist & essentialist assumptions including Extremely Racist OnesĀ Ā

Found this reddit post. This kinda makes me feel better. And itās something I think about sometimes because I always feel like regardless of how hard I work on something I donāt get anywhere.
Nice summary. If youāre curious, the anon here is referring to studies over the last decade that have pointed to major impacts on pattern separationĀ with depression, and how depression can have major impacts onĀ nonsynaptic plasticity.Ā

āI am forever denouncing this therapeutic obsession that governs our modern society, scared of living and haunted by death. We must protect ourselves from everything, heal from everything. Nowadays, food, music, painting, hiking⦠everything is repurposed as a method for healing, for keeping fit, for keeping healthy, when these activities are first and foremost opportunities for pleasure, desire, gratitude, knowledge, wonderment, and bonding with others. Our entire culture, as well as politics, imposes on all citizens this endless and nagging preoccupation with mental and physical health.ā

i used to work at a used bookstore and there was an insect anatomy book for sale that was over $8000 im not even kidding. and i just found it at my school library. its mine for the month.
Itās page after page of the most detailed illustration on insect morphology Iāve ever seen
External anatomy only Iām afraid, but an absolutely invaluable resource nonetheless
Itās called An Atlas of Insect Morphology by Steinmann and Zombori. Looks like there are some much cheaper options now than when I last looked. When I saw it in the bookstoreās system I thought it was a pricing error but I remember looking it up and seeing one for sale that was over $10,000 so I was like okay then. I could only find pdfs from university libraries I donāt have access too. So Iām glad my school has a physical copy.
Idk if I can describe how useful this book is. Itās all illustration. The only text is the labels. I have a really nice book on insect anatomy but itās like your classic textbook
Like very useful but it is still a pain to flip through a thousand page book looking for images but itās mostly text. There arenāt nearly as many diagrams. It doesnāt show you nearly as many angles. It doesnāt show or label even close to level of detail the one above does.
In case anyone hasnāt read my tags: Iām going to scan this whole book and make it into a pdf. You all can have it for free. It will take a while. Bear with me.
Here it is

Intelligence Doesn't Equal Morality
Intellect is rooted in ableist systems and stupidity and intelligence are pointless social constructs that don't relate to morals or character.
I try to be a pretty good person, I fight for human rights, I regularly engage in mutual aid, and I care for my community. I try to do the right thing and support causes I care about and make positive changes in the world.
But I also am not very smart. I have several neurodevelopmental disorders, as well as cognitive disabilities. I canāt do simple, basic math, itās hard for me to remember facts or algorithms, I rely entirely on spellcheck and speech-to-text to write, I failed many classes in high school and I barely passed with a low GPA, I had low pSAT scores and I never took the SATs. I moved around a lot all through school starting in third grade, and I missed a lot of basic fundamentals in learning (like how to do division and multiplication) so when I went to a different school they had already passed it and expected me to know. After my TBI, I could barely read AFTER I was cleared from my āconcussionā symptoms because letters and words would flip around and Iād get headaches. Which still happens sometimes.
A lot of people see me as smart because I've learned a lot of academic language and can formulate thoughts into cohesive posts. But I lack a lot of necessary skills and rely on my caretakers to assist me. Things like budgeting and planning are extremely difficult for me. If I need to do simple addition or subtraction, even with a calculator, I quickly get confused and struggle. I forget basic information about myself all the time, let alone other subjects. I'm talking, has to check my ID for my birthday type confused. Doesn't know my name or address or what year it is confused. It happens daily, sometimes multiple times a day. Being able to type out posts like this often takes weeks and many adaptive tools to get there. Focusing is extremely difficult on many fronts, severe chronic pain, ADHD, dissociation, fatigue, migraines, and TBI, are just some of the contributing factors. I struggle daily with many things because of my lack of intellect.
Iām also privileged in the fact that I had some access to education as a homeless youth, that I had some supports in place to help me (towards the end of school), that I was somewhat able-bodied at the time and could walk or bike to and from school when the school system didnāt provide transportation. I was fortunate to have a chance to succeed, and Iām proud that I graduated high school because it was a difficult task for me, and others often arenāt offered that chance or get accommodations. I almost didnāt and I dropped out many times before graduation. I passed on sheer luck and what little privileges I had.Ā
That all being said, me being stupid (reclaiming it here) doesn't make me a bad person. I don't hurt people because I can't do math. I may mess up things or get confused but it doesn't make me want to harm others.
We often (wrongfully) equate morals with intellect. Being āstupidā, ādumbā, or an āidiotā doesnāt automatically make someone a bad person. Plenty of evil, awful, and abusive people are extremely intelligent.Ā
I see this most notably with people advocating for IQ tests to be able to vote. Often from left-leaning people, in hopes it'll make the right (that they view as unintelligent), unable to vote. The reality is, it just hurts some of our most vulnerable members of the community while not actively doing anything to restrict some of the most dangerous members of our community-- those who know what they're doing to harm others and deliberately doing so. My voice matters, and I speak up against injustice and participate in dismantling oppressive systems. Taking away my right to vote won't make the right stop oppressing minorities (which also puts a lot of faith into the two-party voting system, which is a post for another day).
Additionally, legislative measures that discriminate against intellectually disabled people such as IQ tests for voting are also rooted in racism and classism.Ā
Yes, education can be a vital tool when it comes to addressing discrimination and creating safer communities. But the kind of education that is measured with an IQ test (or any test) isn't the same. Building compassion and caring for others can (and should) happen at any IQ level. We can all practice this, we can all participate.
It harms our communities and stagnates our progress when we equate intelligence with high morals.
wait cld u elaborate on eatign disorder recovery stuff being similar to the 12 step program
just meant in the sense that many ed groups/practitioners these days rely heavily on a disease model (ie the idea that 'the eating disorder' is a discrete neurobiological entity 'inflicting' a sufferer, acting upon a passive receptive psyche) and also consequently imply or outright state that 'healing' / 'recovery' can only occur through the intervention of a second external party (a medical authority, yr loving parents, sometimes literally just jesus). as with drugs, the disease model of eating disorders tends to be framed as a way to 'reduce the stigma' ie, to portray 'the disorder' as something that is morally exculpated on the grounds of not having been 'freely chosen' (being 'like any other disease'). this is a bad argument because it denies agency to people given this diagnosis, justifies authoritarian and traumatising treatment methods, ignores the fact that health and disease are moralised anyway, and doesn't contextualise 'disordered eating' as an expected (and completely comprehensible!) reaction to overwhelming and continuous moral demands to monitor and control our bodies and appetites via food intake. there are of course as many ways to 'have an eating disorder' as there are 'disordered eaters', and there are absolutely cases where, for example, the initial energy deficit is not at all consciously chosen but occurs because of food insecurity, other illnesses, sensory issues, &c. but i would say the 'eating disorder' that the disease model describes is the extreme outlier here, not the rule, and that even in that hypothetical case, the sorts of claims that medical authorities make about 'mental illnesses' as neurobiologically-caused disease entities are still unfounded and consistently evidentiarily lacking.

We celebrate the purported geniuses who discovered the cure--but we don't acknowledge that discovering a cure means nothing unless and until we get the cure to the people who need it--an enterprise we've failed at to a remarkable degree over the last 70 years.
like just because something exists now, people can only conceive the violence of its removal and not the violence required to create and sustain it
