american blackbirds are icterids but european blackbirds are thrushes but american robins are thrushes but european robins are flycatchers and they are named robin because (checks notes) brits in the 1400s called them "robert" on account of they are just some familiar guy who shows up in your yard. hold on post canceled is that really why they are called that? what the fuck. they did this with jackdaws and magpies too? i can't even be annoyed. how human. "who's that? that's bob." fuck dude it sure is.

Ahm sorry for the random message. but i need to explain somethin important i been trying to reach you but i cant maybe theres have a problem can you dm me I cant explain everythng here
HEY EVERYBODY THIS IS A SCAM MESSAGE. THIS IS WHAT A SCAM MESSAGE LOOKS LIKE
A mountain lion cub feasting on a mountain goat carcass. Photographed by Stay Wild Media.
Wacom recently asked me to talk about why I make queer comics, and given there are multiple bills right now floating around in congress that are effectively "we will kill your livelihood if we get a sniff of queer" I had some pretty strong, simply feelings to relay.
You can read the interview here, you can buy my graphic novel featuring a gay vampire here, and you can call your congressmen about rejecting HR 2616, HR 8705, HR 7661 using 5calls.org (they don't have these specific bills listed as things to call about, but luckily you can talk about whatever you want on the phone)
Let's debate about superhero capes (feel free to comment your own arguments as well)!
Capes are too dangerous (the Edna Mode argument)
Cape can get caught on things (e.g. branches, mechanical doors, exposed sharp objects)
Heavy capes can reduce mobility (e.g. weighing them down when running and climbing) and get in the way
Capes can be grabbed by an enemy to choke or restrain the wearer
Capes can increase visibility (especially for flying heroes when contrasted with the sky)
Capes can lead to instability and loss of balance at high speeds
Capes can be tactical (the Batman argument)
Capes can conceal movement, making attacks hard to read
Capes give the wearer a dramatic silhouette that can intimidate criminals
Capes can be used as a weapon or tool in a fight (e.g. using it to obstruct an opponents vision, distract them, wrap around a weapon to disarm, or cause an opponent to flinch or create distance)
Capes can be reinforced to provide some small amount of protection against weapons
Capes can be modified into a glider, parachute, or other tool
Capes can obscure body shape to protect secret identities
Capes can provide basic weather protection by using waterproofing for rain or insulation for the cold.
And now for the poll:
Which argument about superhero capes do you find more compelling?
Edna Mode argument
Batman argument
I am allergic to taking sides
Which argument (much information about said argument in above ask so go read or don't I'm not your mother) about superhero capes do you find more compelling?
Edna Mode argument
Batman argument
I am allergic to taking sides
Very few heroes just tie a random length of cloth around their necks and go. Despite looking simple the capes of heroes other than Batman either have a specialized purpose (Superman's cape is woven out of the Kryptonian equivalent of cotton and is also invulnerable) or any downsides are negated by their powers. The number one use for a superheroes cape is as a bulletproof shield that can be used to protect civilians and this is an important tool for any hero to have and pretty much all modern capes can easily by dropped or released when they become a liability.
Would also point out that capes or cloaks were traditionally used in fencing because they could be used to deflect the blade of an opponent, and this is where the phrase "cloak and dagger" comes from. The Batman argument genuinely has basis in reality.
I would like to add to the Batman argument:
Nightwing (2016) #112
Batman and Robin: Year One #2
Robin (1993) #77
For the people they protect <3
Additionally, capes are actively better against projectiles than the same material worn in a static position on the body.
I've seen people testing this with regular-ass cloth, and basically any type of looser fabric, like a cape or cloak, has a chance to deflect projectiles, including some types of arrows, up until the point where they are sharp and fast enough to pierce armor.
It is generally accepted that most superhero capes of this type - like as with Batman - are not regular-ass cloth, and have an actual bullet-resistant-fabric property to them, which has already been noted.
But I'd like to also add that wearing as a cape has cases where it is specifically better than just wearing it as armor.
This is probably also related to the fencing note from a couple reblogs up, with a cape's general ability to deflect energy, but I did think it relevant to note the case for projectiles, as they are probably a more relevant problem than sword blades most of the time.
Anyway, the fact that it can move freely is an active defensive measure.

transitioning is like putting on the They Live glasses and seeing that 90% of people looking at you are either jerking off or furiously sharpening a knife. or both. and i do not mean that in a sexy or fun way, and i dont like clarifying that, but i know there's a 90% chance you are thinking it, because i wrote it while being a trans woman.
to clarify:
when considering the sexual violence against trans women, it's important to remember that "people only view us sexually" does not mean the same thing as "people only find us attractive". it means "people can only conceptualize of our existence within a sexual light" because that's how the majority of our coverage in media has been tinged in the past century. as a result of the chaste and patriarchal nature of modern capitalism, gender and sexuality are inseparable in much public discourse by virtue of propaganda, and as a result, a trans woman is seen as sexual because efforts towards projecting specifically femininity is only categorized as sexual. and when paired with the uncharitable perception of "man", that propaganda can often evolve how people view us directly into "sexual threat" anywhere, for any reason. i could be in the freezer aisle of costco looking down at the ground while i push my cart and i'd still get dirty looks for wearing a dress (this has happened).
when i say "they're either jerking off or sharpening a knife", i mean we're either viewed sexually, or as sexually threatening, in almost all scenarios.
[NOTE: AS WITH ALL MATTERS OF TRANSMISOGYNY, THIS ISSUE IS 100 TIMES WORSE FOR BLACK GIRLS]
Fun how the bystander effect was coined to cover up how cops are bigoted cowards who let a queer person die and stockholm syndrome was coined to cover that the cops handled a hostage situation so badly the hostages trusted their captors more than the cops.
I don't think the first one is true??? Like at all?? Please enlighten me??
This person is wrong about the bystander effect. It was specifically coined because CIVILIANS (NOT anyone trained in aid or as a responder of any kind) heard some of or everything that happened and didnât intervene. There were no group of cops standing around with their thumbs up their asses. Cops are shitty enough that we donât need to invent stuff like that (people have died in police custody and itâs never because of a âbystander effectâ- itâs cops being violent bigots with a need for power & control over others and CHOOSING not to do anything when you are TRAINED to respond to emergencies.)
The BYSTANDER effect is exactly what itâs called- people who are there DURING the attack or parts of it, and who do nothing, either out of apathy, not knowing how to respond, thinking someone else will take care of it, or being scared for their own safety (etc Iâm not listing them all off). Itâs specifically about ordinary people- again, those who do not have any kind of first aid or emergency training- freezing.
Also, 9-1-1 didnât exist when Kitty was murdered. The bystanders would have needed to find a local precinct phone number or get through to an operator- it wouldnât have been anywhere near as quick to do as today. Moreover, the claim that 37/38 people saw everything and chose to do nothing is also a fabrication by the media, as you pointed out. The reality was that some people heard things and didnât know what it was, and yes, others likely ignored it. But a neighbour came out and held Kitty. Someone did call the police. And later it came out that most people were ear-witnesses and had seen nothing and thought it was a drunken fight. The point of the bystander effect is that itâs not (usually) coming from malice- itâs not people standing around with their thumbs up their asses and laughing as someone is killed, itâs ignorance. Itâs people not knowing what to do, thinking someone else is more equipped, figuring someone else is going to take care of calling help, whatever. Itâs rarely âfuck this person I ainât helping them.â
To be clear, I fucking hate the bystander effect. I think it makes people look like fucking cowards. So Iâm not saying this to let everyone off the hook- because for sure, there are people out there who are malicious about not helping. Theyâre just not typically the majority.
Also, if you want to combat this within yourself, take a first aid course. Or if you find yourself thinking, âsomeone else will probably help,â maybe follow it up with, âwhy shouldnât it be me?â
I also dunno how, if cops had even been there at the moment she was being killed, they would have known Kitty was queer, and how that could have possibly factored into the non-existent decision. Her being queer DID affect the subsequent investigation and the cops deserve every bit of criticism for it.
We do have psychological terms that popped up to explain away police behaviour (or someoneâs reaction to them)- Stockholm is one of them. Bystander is not.
"im not saying feminism is for everyone but-" the fuck? well im saying that. feminism is for everyone. yes even cishet men will benefit from feminism and cishet men should be feminists because cishet men are indeed harmed by the patriarchy; nowhere near to the extent that women are, but having a culture that is fully equal and anti-misogynist benefits everyone. have we forgotten that lifting up the disenfranchised people in society helps all of us as a collective? "im not saying that universal and unalienable human rights are for everyone but-" YES THE FUCK THEY ARE LOL
sorry to everyone out there who thinks they have the funniest tshirt but i think i can confidently say i just saw the actual funniest tshirt just now. i passed by a beautiful black woman with long multicolor braids blowing majestically in the beach breeze & she was wearing an oversized tshirt that said in gigantic letters "WHITE BOY OF THE YEAR"
Iâd die on the hill that âstranger dangerâ is a deeply unhelpful mentality to have. âOoooh everyone is out to get me theyâre all gonna perpetrate harm thatâs actually more likely to come from someone I already know. I better never talk to anyone in my community who I donât already know, just to be safe. Iâm sure there are no other biases interwoven with this mentalityâ like oh my god human traffickers do not just randomly spawn in every parking lot. You donât have to go solo hitchhiking across the country but you also donât have to live in fear that every guy on the street is the knife man whoâs gonna get you. Like have situational awareness, yeah. But most of the time the guy on the street is not knife man heâs actually just a guy on the street and heâs probably pretty chill, and youâre driving yourself crazy by living in a constant state of unnecessary fear.

palestine has taught me how easy it is to normalize genocide when it's so close to you
us americans currently live in a state actively continuing the largest genocide in history against its indigenous people
rightfully so, leftists and people with a moral compass are deeply disturbed by what's happening to palestine, and i think it's in part because we're outsiders not yet desensitized to violence against palestinians
but we also turn a blind eye to reservations where the government is actively depriving indigenous communities of adequate land, food, independence, sanitation, drinking water, and who continues to aid the collective forgetting of indigenous culture
north america was a whole ass world y'all, with civilizations as significant and massive as rome, and we know basically NOTHING about that world because our government has actively destroyed and buried it
the genocide is still ongoing; indigenous people are still here, fighting to preserve their culture and languages, and it's happening right now in your backyard
if you ever wanna know how israelis can live with themselves being so close to an ongoing genocide, you probably already know
